Qin Siyang thought it over for a moment and decided, like before, to play to his strength. To tell the truth, but not the whole truth.
"Hu Chan, I saw your clothes were covered in dirt and had messed up my bed, so I wanted to get you changed."
"If you don't believe me, look. I even got a bathrobe ready for you."
"First of all," the weak, sickly-looking Hu Chan interrupted his explanation, "Can you please take your hand off my chest, and get off me?"
Only then did Qin Siyang realize that he was still straddling Hu Chan's body.
"Oh, right, right. You suddenly woke up and startled me, I forgot."
He quickly stood up, doing his best to maintain a calm smile, hoping to cover up whatever impression that scene might've left in Hu Chan's mind.
Hu Chan sat up and gave him a strange look, "President Qin, the moment I woke up and saw you, I immediately realized it was you who rushed over in time to save my life. I was even thinking about how to thank you."
"And yet you actually took advantage of me while I was unconscious."
"I didn't! I didn't! Don't talk nonsense!", Qin Siyang immediately made a firm declaration, "Heaven and earth can be my witness! I, Qin Siyang, am not into that sort of thing!"
"You were sleeping on my bed, and I thought your clothes were dirty, so I tried to change you into clean ones, what's wrong with that?"
"There's nothing particularly wrong," Hu Chan nodded slightly, his gaze darkening again, "But I still have one question, how did you know I was Hu Chan?"
He pointed to the man beside him who was made up to look like a simple, honest middle-aged plumber, "This is the face I disguised myself with. You've seen it. So shouldn't your first reaction have been to think he was me?"
Qin Siyang sighed inwardly, thinking of a countermeasure.
He obviously couldn't tell the truth.
If he said it outright, what would the woman say about him? What would Hu Chan think of him? What would Wen Shu think?
So he slowed his tone, speaking clearly, word by word.
"At first, I did think the person wearing that face was you. But later, I realized that you yourself had disguised as a sickly weakling instead of the face I know. As for how I realized it, Hu Chan, you should know the reason yourself, shouldn't you?"
His voice sounded full of confidence, firm and unyielding, though in reality he was improvising on the spot, his mind racing.
When he finished, Qin Siyang gave Hu Chan a calm look, a faint smile hanging at the corner of his lips, and silently waited for his answer.
It looked like Qin Siyang was completely sure that Hu Chan understood why he'd recognized him.
Hu Chan froze, actually thrown off by that steady gaze, wondering how he had given himself away.
He was confident in his disguise, absolutely flawless.
And as for recognizing him by build? Impossible.
He had deliberately chosen a thick, stiff jacket. When wearing it, no one could tell which of them, he or Yu Ziying, was the man or the woman.
Frowning, he thought for a moment, then said doubtfully, "Could it be that I… talked in my sleep while I was unconscious?"
"Exactly," Qin Siyang nodded firmly.
'That's right.'
And to make his story sound even more convincing, Qin Siyang, almost without thinking, added, "You said quite a lot of things."
"Quite a lot?", Hu Chan's eyes widened in shock, staring at Qin Siyang.
And in that look of shock, Qin Siyang even caught a flash of killing intent.
Qin Siyang narrowed his eyes, 'What is that supposed to mean?'
'I saved your lives, for heaven's sake, and this brat wants to turn on me?'
That sudden killing aura made the atmosphere in the room drop to freezing point, and the relaxed mood Qin Siyang had moments ago vanished as he instinctively shifted into combat readiness.
He had no more patience for joking around.
He popped a few candies into his mouth and said flatly, "Things happened too suddenly earlier. Even though your call was abrupt and made no sense, I chose to believe you completely right away. To save your lives, I even tricked Zhao Longfei, Li Tianming, and the others into rushing to the school gate."
"After saving you both, I brought you back to my place to rest."
"And now, just because of a few words you supposedly said in your sleep, you're thinking of killing me?"
Hu Chan clenched his teeth, eyes shifting guiltily toward the floor, "I didn't."
"That look in your eyes doesn't fool me. Whether you did or didn't, you know in your heart," Qin Siyang gave a cold snort, "Hu Chan, I'm very disappointed in you."
Then he opened the door, "Since you're not grateful, I won't bother being sentimental. You're awake now, take your friend and get out."
Hu Chan could feel the anger in Qin Siyang's voice and realized he truly shouldn't have blamed his savior over something as trivial as sleep-talking.
His expression twisted with guilt. He stood and bowed deeply to Qin Siyang, "President Qin, I'm sorry."
After apologizing, he didn't straighten up right away but continued, head bowed, "Everyone has secrets they can't speak of. I just panicked when I realized mine might've slipped out. I never meant to repay kindness with enmity."
"I hope you can forgive my behavior just now. If you don't want to take me in anymore because of it, I can leave. But please, at least take care of my friend. I swear I'll repay you."
Bang!
Qin Siyang kicked the door shut hard, making sure no one outside could overhear their conversation.
"Hu Chan, are you out of your mind? You leave, and leave her behind?"
He sneered, "You think I saved a stranger out of the goodness of my heart? Out of some noble compassion?"
"I only saved her because she was with you! If I don't keep you, why would I keep her? I don't even know who she is."
"Repay me later? If I threw you both out right now, you wouldn't even live long enough to make good on your promises. You think I'm stupid enough to take empty words?"
Hu Chan stood there, being scolded like a dog, and for once, didn't talk back.
The proud Holy Son of Zephyr Church stood silently in the room, just taking it.
When Qin Siyang finally paused for breath, Hu Chan said quietly, "My friend… she's just an ordinary person, with no background or identity."
["Lie."]
Qin Siyang pulled out a bird-shaped lie detector from his pocket, his expression growing more contemptuous.
Hu Chan swallowed the rest of his words back down.
"Hu Chan," Qin Siyang said coldly, "When you ask someone for help, you show the right attitude. Especially when that someone is your lifesaver."
Hu Chan gritted his teeth and shook his head, "President Qin, there are some things I really can't say."
"Then I'll make this clear," Qin Siyang said sharply, "If you don't give me a proper explanation about that person's identity, she's not staying in my house, or in South Glory University."
Hu Chan looked desperate, about to plead again, but Qin Siyang went on, "And it's not just my decision. It's Zhao Longfei's as well."
"I borrowed Zhao Longfei's name to scare off your pursuers, I have to give him an explanation too."
"You don't think Zhao Longfei is some kind of public toilet paper, do you? Something you can use whenever you want and throw away after?"
"Know your position first."
