Caleb sat in the dimly lit armory, methodically checking his gear. His hands moved with practiced precision—loading magazines, securing his combat knife, adjusting the straps of his tactical vest. The weight was familiar, grounding.
The others moved around him in near silence, their movements tense but controlled. This was their first real mission, and the gravity of it pressed down on them all.
A voice interrupted the quiet. "Nervous?" It was Aria, one of the operatives who had made it through the trials. Her piercing blue eyes studied him as she leaned against the weapon rack, arms crossed.
Caleb snapped the slide of his sidearm into place. "No. Focused."
She smirked. "Same thing, sometimes."
Briggs' voice came over the intercom. "All teams, final prep. Report to the hangar."
The time had come.
---
The VTOL transport sliced through the night sky, engines whisper-quiet. Below them, the jungle stretched endlessly, dark and unknowable. Caleb sat by the open ramp, watching as the compound came into view—a cluster of structures barely visible through the thick canopy.
Briggs' voice crackled in their earpieces. "You have your objectives. Stick to the plan. No unnecessary risks. Mercer, you're on point."
Caleb signaled to the team. "We move fast and quiet. In and out."
The red light inside the transport blinked once.
Go time.
---
The descent was quick, their drop cables cutting through the dense foliage. Boots met earth with muffled thuds. Caleb crouched low, scanning the perimeter as the others landed beside him. The compound loomed ahead, lights casting long shadows through the trees.
He signaled. Move.
They advanced, weaving through the underbrush. The first obstacle—a perimeter guard, unaware of their presence. Caleb struck fast, silent, the guard collapsing without a sound. The team pushed forward, reaching the facility's outer wall.
Aria tapped her earpiece. "Intel says there's a ventilation access on the west side."
"Then that's our way in."
They moved, keeping low. The tension was electric, every step calculated. Reaching the vent, Caleb signaled to Logan, their tech specialist. In seconds, the panel was off, the path clear.
One by one, they disappeared inside.
The mission had begun.
