Two weeks had passed since Karlos woke up in the villa. Two weeks of healing, of slowly regaining his strength, of learning to trust that Penelope's shadow wouldn't reach them here.
Berlin had barely left his side.
She changed his bandages. Brought him meals. Read to him when the pain medication made him drowsy. At night, she curled against him carefully, mindful of his healing ribs, her hand resting on his chest to feel his heartbeat.
Tonight was different.
Tonight, Karlos was completely healthy.
"Does it taste good? " Berlin asked after Karlos had swallowed a spoonful of soup that Berlin spoon-fed him with.
"Very good, " he immediately nodded. "I want more. "
Berlin happily fed him another spoonful of the soup. "Alright, drink some more. " She then turned her head towards her meal.
She had barely finished half her steak, but she didn't have much of an appetite. It was such a waste, but eating more would only cause her to feel nauseous and sick.
