Chapter 32 - The Path of Silence

Chapter 32: The Path of Silence

The dense fog slowly began to dissipate as Han Feng opened his eyes.

The night was quiet.

Too quiet.

He remained seated for several breaths, listening to the sounds of the valley.

Wind.

Distant insects.

Water flowing somewhere beyond the rocks.

Nothing unusual.

And yet, a faint uneasiness remained in his heart.

His cultivation was progressing steadily, but that was not what concerned him.

It was the feeling.

The same feeling he had experienced before.

The sensation of being watched.

Han Feng slowly stood.

He did not immediately release his spiritual sense.

Instead, he first observed the surroundings with his eyes.

Nothing.

No movement between the trees.

No footprints.

No disturbed vegetation.

His concealment formations were still functioning.

That should have been reassuring.

It wasn't.

Han Feng finally extended a thin strand of spiritual perception.

The mist distorted it almost immediately.

He carefully tested the outer edges of the valley.

Still nothing.

His expression remained calm.

"Whoever it is, they're being careful."

He had learned that the absence of evidence was not evidence of safety.

Especially in a cultivation world.

Han Feng activated the Art of the Celestial Veil.

His aura became even weaker.

He did not simply suppress his cultivation.

He adjusted the flow of Qi through his body so that the remaining fluctuations resembled the natural spiritual currents of the valley.

Then he moved.

One step.

Another.

His feet barely touched the ground.

He avoided branches, loose stones, and patches of disturbed soil.

He deliberately chose a path that did not correspond with the routes he had used earlier.

If someone had been tracking his previous movements, they would have difficulty determining which direction he had taken.

Han Feng reached the edge of the valley.

Instead of leaving through the main entrance, he stopped.

His gaze shifted toward a narrow passage between two cliffs.

It was barely wide enough for one person.

Perfect.

He passed through it.

But he did not travel far.

After several dozen meters, he turned and concealed himself behind a large stone formation.

From there, he could observe the entrance without exposing himself.

Then he waited.

Several minutes passed.

Nothing.

Han Feng remained motionless.

He was beginning to wonder whether his instincts had been wrong.

Then—

A faint pulse came from his spatial pouch.

His eyes narrowed.

The dormant golden Gu.

He carefully touched the pouch.

Another pulse.

Weak.

Different from before.

Han Feng did not take the Gu out.

Instead, he examined the surrounding spiritual energy.

There was a disturbance.

Extremely faint.

It was not an attack.

It was not a direct tracking thread.

Something had changed in the spiritual currents around the valley.

The dormant Gu had reacted to it.

Han Feng's expression became thoughtful.

"So you can sense something."

He did not assume the Gu had anything to do with destiny.

That conclusion would be premature.

The Gu might simply be sensitive to unusual spiritual fluctuations.

Or perhaps its reaction was connected to the Celestial Fragment.

There were too many unknowns.

Han Feng withdrew his hand.

For now, the reaction itself was enough.

Someone might be nearby.

And if that was true, waiting passively would be dangerous.

"If someone is tracking me..."

A faint smile appeared on his lips.

"...then I'll give them something to follow."

Han Feng moved again.

This time, he deliberately allowed a trace of Qi to escape.

Not enough to reveal his true cultivation.

Just enough to leave a recognizable spiritual signature.

He guided the trace toward the opposite side of the valley.

Then he disappeared into the darkness.

A moment later, another faint trace appeared near the stream.

Then another near the northern cliff.

Each one was slightly different.

None was strong enough to be suspicious on its own.

Together, however, they created a confusing trail.

Han Feng had no intention of making himself completely undetectable.

That would only tell his pursuer that he had noticed the tracking.

Instead, he would create uncertainty.

Three possible directions.

Three possible trails.

And none represented his actual position.

He returned to his hidden observation point.

There, he activated a simple defensive formation.

It was not powerful.

It could not withstand a direct attack from a strong cultivator.

Its purpose was different.

It suppressed spiritual fluctuations within a small area and blended them with the surrounding environment.

Anyone passing nearby would have difficulty noticing him unless they actively searched for the exact location.

Han Feng settled behind the stone formation.

His breathing slowed.

His eyes remained fixed on the valley entrance.

The game had changed.

Before, he had been running.

Now, he was waiting.

But Han Feng knew better than to become overconfident.

If the person tracking him was truly connected to the mysterious forces surrounding the Celestial Fragment, then the enemy might possess methods he had never encountered.

He had to assume that every move could be observed.

Every trace could be examined.

Every mistake could become a weakness.

Time passed.

The moon slowly moved across the sky.

Nothing happened.

Han Feng remained patient.

Then—

A tiny ripple appeared at the edge of his spiritual perception.

His eyes opened.

Someone had entered the valley.

He did not move.

He did not even breathe differently.

A black silhouette stood near the main entrance.

Motionless.

Observing.

Han Feng narrowed his eyes.

The figure did not immediately enter.

Instead, it raised one hand.

A faint black thread emerged between its fingers.

Han Feng's gaze became cold.

"A tracking technique..."

He recognized the principle.

Not the exact method.

But enough.

The person was not searching randomly.

They were following spiritual traces.

Han Feng looked toward the three false trails he had created.

The black thread trembled.

Then slowly shifted toward the northern cliff.

Han Feng's eyes narrowed.

His trap was working.

But then the black thread stopped.

The figure did not follow the trail.

It remained still.

Han Feng's expression changed.

The stranger had noticed something.

A moment later, the black thread divided.

One strand moved toward the northern cliff.

The other remained near the entrance.

Han Feng's pupils contracted.

"Two tracking points?"

The stranger was testing the traces instead of blindly following them.

That was bad.

Very bad.

Han Feng slowly shifted his weight.

He was prepared to retreat through the narrow passage.

Then another sensation reached him.

A second spiritual fluctuation.

Not from the entrance.

From above.

Han Feng looked toward the cliffs.

A faint shadow stood on the ridge.

Someone else had already taken position there.

His heart tightened.

Two people.

Perhaps more.

And the valley suddenly felt much smaller.

The first figure raised its hand again.

The black thread trembled.

This time, it did not move toward any of the false trails.

Instead, it slowly curved toward the center of the valley.

Toward him.

Han Feng's expression became completely still.

"They found the pattern."

The realization came instantly.

They had not identified his exact location yet.

But they had realized that the scattered traces were artificial.

His false trail had bought him time.

It had not fooled them.

That meant his next move mattered.

If he stayed, they would eventually narrow the search.

If he fled immediately, his movement might reveal his actual position.

And if he attacked—

he risked exposing far more than he was willing to reveal.

Han Feng glanced toward the spatial pouch containing the Celestial Fragment.

Then toward the pouch containing the dormant golden Gu.

Neither could fall into their hands.

The thought made his decision.

He would not fight them here.

He would make them leave the valley with the wrong answer.

Han Feng silently withdrew three small spirit stones.

He placed one near the stream.

Another beneath a tree.

The third beside the northern cliff.

Then he poured a tiny amount of Qi into each.

The stones activated.

The valley suddenly produced three separate spiritual fluctuations.

All three resembled a cultivator leaving the area.

The first figure immediately turned toward the stream.

The second shifted on the ridge.

For a brief moment, their attention divided.

That was all Han Feng needed.

He moved.

Not toward the entrance.

Not toward the false trails.

He slipped into the narrow passage behind him.

But before leaving, he deliberately allowed one final trace of his aura to escape.

A trace stronger than the others.

A trace that suggested panic.

A trace that pointed toward the eastern mountains.

Then he vanished.

Behind him, the black thread snapped toward the false signature.

The figure at the entrance reacted immediately.

The second figure on the ridge moved as well.

Both pursued the new trail.

Han Feng continued through the narrow passage until the spiritual fluctuations of the valley disappeared behind him.

Only then did he stop.

He pressed himself against the cold stone wall and listened.

Nothing.

He waited several breaths.

Then his hand moved toward his spatial pouch.

The dormant Gu pulsed once.

Han Feng froze.

It was the strongest reaction yet.

Not to his thoughts.

Not directly to the Celestial Fragment.

To something outside.

His eyes narrowed.

There was someone else in the mountains.

Someone who had not entered the valley.

Someone whose presence the dormant Gu had sensed before he did.

Han Feng slowly looked into the darkness ahead.

The game had changed again.

He had thought he was being hunted by the people inside the valley.

But perhaps they were not the only ones hunting him.

A cold realization settled in his mind.

The real danger might not be behind him.

He tightened his grip on his sleeve.

"Then I need to move."

He disappeared into the darkness.

This time, he did not run blindly.

He ran with a destination.

Because staying alive was no longer enough.

He needed to discover who was watching the watchers.

And somewhere behind him, the black-cloaked figures followed the false trail he had deliberately left behind.

They believed they were closing in.

They did not yet realize that Han Feng had already escaped their net.

But the dormant Gu continued to pulse.

Once.

Twice.

As if something unseen was drawing closer.
