Chapter 39: The Heart of the Ruins
The Ruins of Eternal Night had not fallen silent after the awakening.
They had become quieter.
Far too quiet.
Han Feng stood in the underground chamber, his hand still resting near the Dark Moonstone he had just secured.
The golden lights in the darkness had disappeared.
But the sensation of being watched remained.
He slowly turned his head.
Nothing.
Only black mist drifting through the broken corridors.
Han Feng narrowed his eyes.
He had learned long ago that the absence of an enemy did not mean the absence of danger.
He activated the Celestial Veil and concealed his aura once more.
Then he looked down at the six-pointed formation beneath the ruined platform.
Five points remained dark.
One continued to emit a faint golden glow.
The same pattern he had seen beneath the Black Moon Sect.
But there was something different now.
A thin line of spiritual energy extended from the glowing point.
It disappeared beneath the floor.
Han Feng's expression became serious.
So the disturbance came from below.
The heartbeat-like vibration had not stopped.
It had merely become weaker.
Han Feng crouched beside the formation.
He carefully examined the cracks in the stone.
The underground structure was ancient.
Much older than the Mountain-Sealing Array.
And yet the two systems were connected.
That raised a disturbing possibility.
The Mountain-Sealing Array may not have been built to control the ruins.
Perhaps it was built to control what lies beneath them.
Han Feng did not immediately accept the thought.
There was not enough evidence.
But he had learned to follow patterns.
And the pattern here was becoming impossible to ignore.
The Path Beneath the Ruins
Han Feng searched the chamber for another passage.
He found nothing at first.
Then his gaze stopped on the central platform.
The place where the Dark Moonstone had been resting was now empty.
Beneath it was a circular depression.
Han Feng examined the edges.
There were traces of an old mechanism.
He released a tiny thread of Qi.
The depression responded.
A faint vibration spread through the floor.
Then—
Click.
A section of the stone platform shifted.
A narrow opening appeared.
Cold air rose from below.
Han Feng immediately stepped back.
He did not enter.
Instead, he waited several breaths.
No spiritual beast emerged.
No formation activated.
He carefully extended his spiritual sense.
The passage descended.
Deeply.
Far deeper than the chamber itself.
And somewhere at the bottom...
something was still moving.
Han Feng's expression hardened.
He took out the Resonance Marker.
The black jade had become warm again.
Not hot.
Not violently reactive.
Just warm enough to confirm what he already suspected.
The ancient passage was connected to the same system.
Han Feng stored the marker again.
I'm not following the marker.
I'm following the evidence.
He descended.
The passage was narrow.
Han Feng had to turn sideways in several places.
Ancient inscriptions covered the walls.
Most were incomplete.
But unlike the inscriptions above, these did not describe cultivation techniques.
They described containment.
Han Feng stopped at one particularly clear section.
Several ancient symbols formed a sentence.
He could not understand every character.
But the meaning was obvious enough.
"The Heart must remain asleep."
Han Feng's pupils contracted.
Another line followed.
"When the six paths answer one another, the seal will weaken."
His breathing slowed.
The six nodes.
The Resonance Markers.
The golden point.
The awakening beneath the ruins.
Everything was connected.
But the inscription contained one final warning.
Half of it had been destroyed.
Han Feng could only make out a few words.
"…the one who carries the resonance…"
The rest was gone.
He did not know whether the sentence described a key, a warning, or a sacrifice.
He continued downward.
The Heart
After nearly half an hour, the passage finally opened.
Han Feng stepped into an enormous underground cavern.
The ceiling was impossible to see.
Massive stone pillars rose from the darkness, disappearing into the black mist above.
At the center of the cavern stood something that made Han Feng stop.
A gigantic sphere of black stone floated several meters above the ground.
Chains of ancient spiritual energy surrounded it.
Six chains extended outward.
Each disappeared into one of the surrounding walls.
Han Feng stared at the structure.
The six chains.
The six nodes.
The Mountain-Sealing Array.
The Celestial Fragment.
Everything suddenly seemed to point toward this place.
Then the sphere moved.
Thump.
A wave of spiritual pressure spread through the cavern.
Han Feng's meridians tightened.
He immediately activated the Celestial Veil.
Another pulse followed.
Thump.
This time, the Resonance Marker inside his spatial ring vibrated.
The Celestial Fragment responded at the same moment.
Han Feng's face became solemn.
The sphere was the source of the heartbeat.
Or at least...
part of it.
Something was sealed inside.
Before Han Feng could examine it further, one of the six chains began to glow.
The golden light traveled along its length.
Then stopped.
A figure emerged from the darkness beneath the sphere.
Han Feng immediately stepped backward.
It was not human.
The creature stood nearly three meters tall.
Its body was formed from black stone and condensed spiritual energy.
Unlike the guardian he had fought earlier, however, this one did not attack immediately.
It simply stood between Han Feng and the Heart.
Its empty eyes opened.
Golden light appeared inside them.
Han Feng's fingers tightened.
Another guardian.
But this one felt different.
Much stronger.
The Silent Guardian
The guardian raised one hand.
The entire cavern shook.
Han Feng immediately moved.
A stone fist crashed down where he had been standing.
The impact created a wave of spiritual pressure that threw him several meters backward.
Han Feng rolled across the ground and rose immediately.
His shoulder throbbed from his previous injury.
Too strong.
He could not fight this creature directly.
The guardian advanced.
Each step caused the cavern floor to tremble.
Han Feng activated Ghostly Shift.
His figure blurred.
The guardian's fist passed through his afterimage.
Han Feng appeared behind it.
He struck its back with Spectral Void Palm.
Boom!
The attack barely moved it.
Han Feng's expression changed.
The guardian turned.
A palm swept toward him.
Han Feng narrowly escaped.
The attack struck a stone pillar.
The pillar exploded.
Fragments flew through the air.
Han Feng retreated.
My attacks aren't enough.
Then he noticed something.
The guardian's body was connected to the six chains.
Every time it moved, spiritual energy flowed through them.
It wasn't simply guarding the Heart.
It was part of the sealing mechanism.
Han Feng's eyes narrowed.
If I destroy the guardian, I may weaken the seal.
That could be worse than fighting it.
He stopped attacking.
Instead, he began observing.
The guardian attacked again.
Han Feng dodged.
Again.
He dodged.
Again.
Each movement revealed another part of the mechanism.
The guardian was not trying to kill him immediately.
It was driving him away from the Heart.
Protecting it.
And the more Han Feng resisted, the brighter the six chains became.
Then Han Feng noticed something else.
Only one chain was glowing golden.
The same direction as the awakened node.
The other five are dormant.
Han Feng suddenly understood.
The Heart was not fully awake.
Something had only partially activated it.
And if he interfered carelessly...
he might complete the process.
Han Feng stopped.
He lowered his hand.
The guardian also stopped.
For several breaths, the two stared at each other.
Then the Celestial Fragment inside Han Feng's spatial ring released a faint pulse.
The guardian's golden eyes brightened.
It did not attack.
Instead, it lowered its hand.
A strange pressure touched Han Feng's consciousness.
Not an attack.
A test.
For a brief moment, he saw the six-pointed formation.
Then the image changed.
Five chains.
One golden.
A vast darkness beneath them.
And a single sentence.
"The Heart does not awaken for strength."
The vision disappeared.
Han Feng opened his eyes.
The guardian had already turned away.
It returned to its position beneath the floating sphere.
Han Feng understood.
It had not accepted him.
It had simply determined that he was not yet the one who should be stopped.
That distinction mattered.
Han Feng slowly backed away.
He would not touch the Heart.
Not yet.
A Stranger in the Ruins
Han Feng climbed back through the ancient passage.
He had barely reached the upper chamber when he sensed another presence.
Someone was standing near the entrance.
Han Feng immediately activated the Celestial Veil.
A man stood in the darkness.
He wore a dark robe and a silver mask.
The same mysterious cultivator from the ruins.
Han Feng's eyes narrowed.
The man looked toward the chamber below.
"So you found it."
Han Feng remained silent.
The man turned his masked face toward him.
"You should leave."
Han Feng's expression remained unchanged.
"Why?"
The man gave a quiet laugh.
"Because the ruins have begun responding to you."
Han Feng's hand moved closer to his spatial ring.
The man's gaze briefly shifted toward it.
"The marker."
Han Feng's expression hardened.
"You know about it."
"I know what it is."
The man's answer was calm.
"But I don't know everything."
That answer surprised Han Feng.
For the first time, the stranger sounded less like someone who possessed all the answers and more like someone following the same mystery.
"What do you want?"
The man was silent for several breaths.
Then he said:
"To know whether the Heart will recognize the person carrying the resonance."
Han Feng's eyes narrowed.
Before he could ask another question, the stranger stepped backward into the darkness.
He did not disappear magically.
He simply moved beyond Han Feng's perception.
But his final words remained behind.
"Do not awaken what you cannot put back to sleep."
Then he was gone.
Han Feng stood alone.
He did not pursue him.
There was no point.
The man's warning was more important than his identity.
Han Feng looked toward the passage leading beneath the ruins.
The Heart was still sleeping.
For now.
He touched the spatial ring containing the Dark Moonstone.
The stone remained cold and stable.
A useful catalyst.
But it was no longer his greatest concern.
The Ruins of Eternal Night contained something far more dangerous.
Something connected to the six nodes.
Something connected to the Resonance Marker.
And perhaps...
something connected to the Celestial Diagram.
Han Feng turned toward the surface.
He needed to leave.
Not because he was afraid of the ruins.
But because he had finally realized the truth.
The greatest danger in Eternal Night was not what was hunting him.
It was what might awaken if he stayed too long.
Behind him, deep beneath the ruins—
Thump.
The Heart pulsed once.
A second golden line appeared along one of the six chains.
Han Feng stopped.
His expression darkened.
The awakening had already begun.
