Vrrrrrâ
The hum of the thermal katana rang out alongside the thud of falling limbs and shattered machinery. As V exhaled, he stepped back slightly, just enough to avoid a claw swipe from Jin Ji-yoon's exoskeleton-enhanced left hand.
Huff⊠huffâŠ
The pain of losing an arm didn't faze Jin Ji-yoon at all. His system was already pumped full of combat stimulants when he donned the exosuit. With blood-red eyes locked onto V, saliva dripped uncontrollably from his mouth.
There was only one command echoing through his chemically-eroded mind:
Eliminate Kurt Hansen. Kill anyone who gets in the way.
His instincts screamed to keep fighting, but his body was on the verge of collapse. His brain, hijacked by drugs and madness, no longer had the capacity to tell him to stop. Jin Ji-yoon had only one thought leftâ
Kill.
Kill the man standing in his path.
Facing that bloodshot gaze, V took one more step back. He held the katana horizontally across his body, blade outward, assuming a defensive stance.
This wasn't fear. It was experience.
Having dealt with countless cyberpsychos, V knew that a slight retreat at this stage was the smartest move. Cyberpsychos were like wild animalsâat the height of their madness, they were most dangerous, but also most predictable.
In this state, V just had to read Jin Ji-yoon's intentions and react accordingly. Once the frenzy passed, even without counterattacks, victory was all but assured.
Jin Ji-yoon was performing exactly as expected.
Despite the exosuit amplifying his strength and speed, missing an arm made him vulnerableâand relying on pure berserker instinct to hit someone like V was a fool's dream.
The katana's energy core fully charged, V calmly wiped the splattered blood from the blade. As the sizzling blood burned off the residual heat, releasing the scent of charred flesh, he raised the blade.
Then he thrustâsharp and precise, like a spear.
The katana pierced directly through Jin Ji-yoon's chest.
Just as the enemy attempted to lunge forward, his body stalled from overexertion. That brief moment of weakness was all V needed. His blade struck trueâstraight into the heart.
As a Wasteland wanderer, V never passed up a survival opportunityâand he never left room for enemies to get back up. A single mistake, a single weakness, always meant death.
The katana tore through the target with no resistance. V yanked it out quickly.
It was still razor-sharp.
He gripped it with both hands and raised it.
Then, he delivered a diagonal rightward slashâkesagiri, the "monk's robe cut" from the kenjutsu braindance he'd once studied.
Jin Ji-yoon didn't even scream.
One clean cut, and it was over.
Click.
V sheathed the katana, not sparing Jin Ji-yoon so much as a glance.
Earlier, he had deactivated the thermal core because he realized the heated blade left uneven cuts and emitted a foul smell. To preserve its edge, he relied only on its natural sharpness.
Apparently, that was enough.
In his memories, Jin Ji-yoon had used Sandevistan during their encounter in Los Angeles. But today? Nothing. Strange.
Did the exosuit conflict with Sandevistan activation?
Unable to figure it out, V turned aroundâand realized he had been the first to finish his fight.
Maine, Jack, and Oliver were all still tangled up with their opponents.
Shouldn't have sheathed the blade... he thought.
He hadn't expected to outpace them all, but here they wereâstill fighting. So V drew his katana again and moved toward Oliver to assist.
Oliver had improved in close combat, but he was still a sniper by trade. Fighting an exosuit-enhanced elite at close range? He'd win, sureâbut not quickly.
That was V's assumption.
But before he could reach himâBOOM! Oliver was blown backward, crashing onto the pavement. His opponent, however, lay motionlessâbody mangled.
"Shit! That grenade fuse was way too short! Did I modify it like that?! Thank hell for Sandevistanâif that guy had reacted quicker, or if I had reacted slower..."
Still on the ground, Oliver slapped at his burning pants and hissed in pain. "I swear I just tossed it and it exploded right away!"
"You sure you didn't grab the wrong ones when we moved gear from Hera to the Phantom Dogs van?" T-Bug's voice came through the comms. "Instant detonation sounds like Karl's custom mods."
Oliver glanced at the unused grenades in his pouch. "âŠGoddammit. You're right."
Only then did he notice how badly the shrapnel had torn up the side facing the blast. His hands were full of metal fragments.
Even with Sandevistan activated, he'd been too slow.
"Damn it, I'm out of the fight. I need emergency treatment. The rest is on you guys. What a screw-up..."
"Be more careful next timeâV! Incoming!" Jack shouted.
Seeing V coming to help, Jack activated his Berserk module. His muscles tensed, and he absorbed a punch from the exosuit soldierâat the cost of cracked skin and exposed dermal armor.
The hit staggered the enemy for just a moment.
That was enough.
V slipped in behind, drove his blade into a joint gapâand pierced clean through.
"That's three down."
Of the four Militech soldiers wearing Riot Response exosuits, only one remained.
