Chapter 10 - The Black Veil’s Trial

"Some doors are meant to remain closed. But I was never one to ask permission."

---

Aedric followed the instructions in the letter, his steps silent against the marble floors of the Academy. The path led him deep—below the lecture halls, beneath the grand libraries, past corridors no ordinary student had ever walked.

The air thickened. The torches flickered, casting long shadows. And then, at the end of the passage, a door stood waiting.

No handle. No keyhole. Only a symbol—a black sigil shaped like a serpent devouring its own tail.

Aedric placed his palm against it.

Pain lanced through his arm, sharp and cold. Blood dripped from his fingertips as the sigil glowed crimson, drinking his offering.

The door groaned open.

And he stepped inside.

---

The Gathering of the Veil

Aedric found himself in a vast underground chamber, its walls carved with runes that pulsed like living veins.

Figures in dark robes stood in a circle. Faces hidden. Eyes watching.

"You are late," a voice spoke—low, commanding.

Aedric met the speaker's gaze. "I wasn't aware I was invited."

A chuckle rippled through the gathered figures.

"Names mean nothing here," the voice continued. "We are the Black Veil. We are the truth behind the Academy's lies."

Aedric said nothing. He did not trust them. Not yet.

A hooded figure stepped forward, holding a blade. "If you seek to join, you must pass the Trial."

Aedric tilted his head. "And if I refuse?"

"Then you leave this room in pieces."

The choice was never real.

Aedric stepped forward. "Then let's begin."

---

The Trial of the Veil

The rules were simple.

Survive.

The execution, however, was anything but.

Aedric was thrown into a circular arena, the walls closing in with each passing second. Five masked figures stood around him, their blades drawn.

No names. No mercy.

A test of skill. A test of will.

The first attacker moved fast—but Aedric was faster. A sidestep, a precise strike to the ribs, and the figure crumpled.

The second came from behind. Aedric twisted, catching the blade with his own. Sparks flew. A moment later, his opponent lay motionless.

Three remained.

They did not hesitate. They struck as one.

Aedric did not parry. He did not dodge.

He stepped into the attack.

Pain flared as a dagger grazed his shoulder, but his hand shot forward, gripping his opponent's wrist. A sharp twist—snap—and the figure collapsed, screaming.

Two left.

Aedric exhaled. Enough games.

A single movement—fluid, effortless. A blade flashed.

And the trial was over.

---

Acceptance into the Dark

The chamber was silent as Aedric wiped the blood from his hands.

The leader of the Black Veil stepped forward. "You fight like a man with nothing to lose."

Aedric met his gaze. "That's because I don't."

Another chuckle. A nod of approval. "Then welcome, Brother of the Veil."

A mark was pressed into his palm, burning into his skin. A symbol of his initiation.

Aedric had entered the Black Veil.

But what they did not knowChapter 10 – Whispers of Rebellion

"Loyalty is an illusion. Power is the only truth. And I will wield it to reshape the world."

The Academy had always been a place of knowledge, but beneath its hallowed halls, another reality lurked—one of secrets, shadows, and silent wars. Aedric had seen the surface of it, but now, as a Brother of the Veil, he stood at the heart of the storm.

The Black Veil believed they had claimed him. But they were wrong.

Aedric would take from them everything they sought to hide.

And then, he would burn their name from history.

The Veil's Purpose

The Black Veil was older than the Academy itself. It had survived kings, wars, and the rise and fall of empires. Their purpose was simple: control.

From the shadows, they whispered into the ears of rulers. They decided which knowledge was too dangerous to be shared, which bloodlines would continue, and which would end. They were not scholars—they were architects of history.

Aedric listened. He learned. He played the role of the obedient initiate, absorbing their knowledge like a blade drinking blood.

But what they did not see was that every secret they revealed, every truth they spoke, only sharpened his resolve.

He was not here to serve them.

He was here to destroy them.

A Hidden War

Beneath the polished order of the Academy, war brewed in silence.

It was not fought with swords on open battlefields, but with whispers in the dark, with poisoned cups and vanished names.

A faction had risen against the Veil—small, scattered, but growing. They called themselves the Ashen Pact.

Their goal? To end the Veil's reign.

Aedric first heard of them through Selene.

They met in the library, her dark eyes wary as she handed him a slip of parchment.

"They are watching you," she whispered.

He unfolded the paper. A single symbol was drawn upon it—a broken crown.

The mark of the Ashen Pact.

Selene exhaled. "You have a choice to make, Aedric. Them… or us."

He met her gaze, unreadable. "And why do you assume I choose sides?"

"Because you always do."

He smirked. "Then let's make sure I choose the winning one."

The Pact's Proposition

The Ashen Pact was not strong enough to challenge the Veil directly. Not yet.

But they had learned to move in silence, striking in the places the Veil did not expect.

Aedric met their leader in the ruins beneath the Academy—an abandoned chamber where the whispers of history still lingered.

The leader was hooded, his voice low and measured.

"You know what the Veil truly is. You know the chains they place on knowledge, on power. We seek to end them. And you…" The man tilted his head. "You could be our greatest weapon."

Aedric studied him. "And if I refuse?"

"Then the Veil devours you, like it does all who think themselves untouchable."

Aedric smirked. "Then I suppose we share a common enemy."

The Pact's leader nodded. "Then welcome to the rebellion, Aedric. Let us bring ruin to those who believe themselves gods."

The First Strike

The Veil had many secrets, but the greatest of them lay within the Vault of the Forgotten.

Aedric stood before its entrance, his pulse steady. Tonight, the Pact would take their first step toward war.

The plan was simple: infiltrate the vault, take what the Veil had hidden, and disappear before they realized what had been stolen.

But nothing ever went according to plan.

The Betrayal in the Dark

The vault was a labyrinth of stone and silence, its walls lined with forbidden knowledge—scrolls that told of gods long buried, books bound in human skin, records of the Academy's darkest sins.

Aedric moved like a shadow, his fingers trailing over the tomes.

And then—

A sound. A whisper of movement where there should have been none.

He turned just in time.

Steel flashed. Pain bloomed.

A dagger buried itself in his side.

Aedric staggered, his breath sharp. He looked up—into familiar eyes.

Selene.

She pulled the blade free, her hands shaking.

"Aedric…" Her voice was a whisper of regret. "I had to."

He pressed a hand to the wound, crimson staining his fingers. He did not look away from her.

"You made a mistake," he murmured.

She stepped back, her eyes glistening. "The Pact—"

He moved.

Despite the pain, despite the blood, he moved faster than she expected. His hand closed around her throat, slamming her against the wall.

She gasped, her dagger clattering to the floor.

"You thought you could kill me?" His voice was quiet. Dangerous.

Selene's fingers trembled against his wrist. "I—"

"Shh." He leaned closer, his breath warm against her ear. "Did you really think I trusted you?"

Tears slipped down her cheeks. "Please…"

Aedric tilted his head, watching her. For a brief moment, something flickered in his gaze.

Then, he let her go.

She collapsed, coughing, her hands gripping her throat.

He knelt beside her, his voice soft. "I don't need revenge, Selene." He reached forward, brushing her hair from her face. "You've already lost."

And then he was gone.

The War Begins

Aedric did not return to the Ashen Pact.

They had betrayed him.

The Veil had tried to control him.

Now, there was only one path left.

His own.

As he stood atop the highest spire of the Academy, the city below bathed in moonlight, he whispered to the night—

"You want war?" His crimson eyes burned. "Then let it begin."

what they could not see—was that he had no intention of serving them.

No.

He would use them. Learn from them. And when the time came…

He would burn them to the ground.
