High above the panicked fleet of the Whitebeard Pirates, the giant, laughing visage of the Second Mizukage, Gengetsu Hozuki, condensed into a small, terrifyingly cute, chibi-style clone.
"Set sail!"
"Run for your lives!"
When facing an unstoppable force of nature, pride vanished. Dozens of pirate ships scrambled to scatter. But the childlike, ballooning clone merely giggled as it plummeted toward the nearest galleon.
It landed on the deck. The oil on its skin superheated the water inside its body.
BOOM!
A catastrophic steam explosion blasted the massive ship into splinters, sending men and cannons flying into the sky. Then, as the vapor cooled into hail, the chibi clone reformed from the mist, perfectly intact, seeking its next target. Physical attacks phased right through it. It was an invincible, infinite bomb.
Beneath the waves, inside the Flying Dutchman, Orochimaru glared at the monitors, his golden eyes filled with venom.
"Hmph. If my research had been completed, I would have killed him," he hissed. (Though, realistically, if Mufasa were here, he wouldn't kill Gengetsu—he'd probably just stuff the Edo Tensei Mizukage into a turbine to create a perpetual motion steam engine).
"It's too late for 'what ifs'," Mei Terumi snapped, her face pale.
"Dive!" commanded the ship's captain. The Flying Dutchman plunged deeper into the abyss, abandoning the doomed Whitebeard Pirates and the falling Land of Water, setting a course for Marineford.
As the pressure gauges dropped, Orochimaru cast one last hateful glare toward Top Island. Damn you, Gengetsu. If you destroy my lab, I will never forgive you.
But Gengetsu was nothing if not thorough. He unleashed a chain of devastating steam explosions across Top Island. The pirate headquarters was obliterated. The defensive walls were reduced to ash. The very foundation of the island shook with apocalyptic force.
Deep underground, Orochimaru's multi-layered defenses finally buckled under the seismic stress.
The lab violently shook. Chunks of the ceiling crushed equipment. The massive stasis tanks holding the corpses of Bloodline Limit test subjects shattered. And finally, the primary containment vessel—the one holding Orochimaru's masterpiece—cracked.
CRASH!
Nutrient fluid flooded the floor, washing the pulsating, curse-mark-covered lump of flesh out of its glass womb.
Then, the true horror began.
Driven by an engineered instinct, the lump of meat slithered toward the nearest corpse of a Bloodline Limit user. Fleshy, microscopic tendrils shot out from the meat, burrowing into the dead flesh like roots.
Within seconds, grotesque, mushroom-like buds sprouted across the corpse. The dead body began to violently swell, ballooning until its skin was taut and transparent.
POP!
The corpse burst in a shower of gore, scattering thousands of fleshy spores across the flooded lab. Like dandelion seeds landing on fertile soil, the spores embedded themselves into the other scattered corpses. They rooted. They fed. They expanded.
In mere minutes, the dark laboratory transformed into a writhing forest of fleshy growths. Corpses swelled and exploded in a sickening symphony of pops, spreading the contagion further.
In the center of it all, the original lump of flesh squirmed. It realized it was too slow to consume the buds it was producing. So, it adapted. Human-like mouths ripped open across its surface. It gorged itself. But crawling was too inefficient. So, eight jagged, spider-like legs burst from its mass.
The many-mouthed, multi-legged horror scurried through its fleshy garden, devouring everything, rapidly growing to the size of a grown man. It was on its way to becoming a behemoth.
But fate intervened. The island's foundation finally gave way, and a massive fissure ripped through the lab's wall.
Millions of gallons of freezing seawater rushed in, washing away the fleshy forest and violently sucking the monster out into the open ocean.
The creature let out a silent, furious shriek. The crushing pressure of the sea was upon it.
Instantly, water began to swirl around the creature, forming a perfect, spherical barrier. If a shinobi were there, they would have gasped. It was a flawless Water Prison Jutsu—used not to trap an enemy, but to shield its own body from the ocean's wrath.
Carried by the current, the bubbled monster drifted into the dark abyss.
The stench of the destroyed lab and the bloody spores attracted a frenzy of deep-sea sharks. Hundreds of them swarmed the fissure. One massive great white unhinged its jaws and swallowed the Water Prison—and the monster inside—whole.
Silence fell for a moment.
Then, the shark's belly instantly froze solid. Sharp ice spikes violently erupted from within, shredding the shark to ribbons. The fleshy monster burst out of the carcass.
The other sharks went into a frenzy, attacking the meat. But every shark that took a bite died a gruesome, inexplicable death.
One was dissolved into sludge by a burst of acid. Another was fried to a crisp by high-voltage lightning. A third violently exploded from the inside out. A fourth was drained to a dry husk in seconds, its life force siphoned away.
The lump of flesh was unleashing an endless, impossible variety of ninjutsu.
High above the island, Gengetsu chuckled, entirely unaware of the apocalyptic bio-weapon he had just set loose upon the world's oceans.
Beneath the waves, the creature continued to evolve. To survive the aquatic slaughter, it grew fins, gills, and a streamlined, hydrodynamic carapace. By the time the last shark floated dead to the surface, a terrifying fish-monster, covered in gnashing human mouths, swam into the abyss.
Orochimaru had given it a name: The Myriad Technique Convergence Entity.
It was the culmination of his life's work, heavily inspired by his time in the industrialized, forward-thinking Sunagakure. His vision had long surpassed his youthful obsession.
Why covet a mere Sharingan? Orochimaru had asked himself. Why steal a single tree when I can devour the entire forest?
He wanted it all. He recognized the genius of his old master, Hiruzen Sarutobi, the "Professor" who mastered the balance of the five elemental natures. A balanced shinobi could adapt to any battlefield, counter any element, and act as a universal key.
Orochimaru just wanted to upgrade that key. He had engineered an intelligent, biological entity capable of absorbing, integrating, and perfectly balancing every ninjutsu and Bloodline Limit in existence.
He had spent a year building it. He hadn't yet found a way to test it.
Ironically, Gengetsu Hozuki had just run the ultimate field test for him. The results were horrifyingly successful. Soon, legends of a mouth-covered leviathan devouring ships and sea monsters would plague the Land of Water. A new, unprecedented crisis had been born.
But the world was already drowning in crises.
While Orochimaru and Mei fled, Tsunade Senju had no such luxury. The Hokage could not abandon her village.
Faced with a massive invasion from Kumogakure, she rallied the Hidden Leaf to defend their home to the death.
At first, the cutting-edge automated defense systems purchased from Sunagakure worked wonders. Suna's Prism Towers incinerated large swaths of the battlefield with concentrated light. Hidden stealth cannons shredded advancing Cloud platoons. The Cloud ninja were terrified to cluster together.
But those defenses were designed to kill living men.
Against the undead, they were useless.
Tsunade stood on the roof of the Hokage monument, her heart heavy as she stared at the village gates.
BOOM!
The earth shook violently.
Standing just outside the village were the reincarnated Kage of the Cloud: the First, Second, and Fourth Raikage. But they were merely spectating.
The Third Raikage was putting on a show.
Famed for possessing the "Strongest Spear" and "Strongest Shield," the Third Raikage was a one-man army. In life, he had fought the Eight-Tails to a standstill and battled ten thousand shinobi for three days and nights.
Now, with an immortal Edo Tensei body, he was a god of destruction.
He activated his Lightning Release Chakra Mode. Brilliant blue electricity wove into a dense armor around his body, pushing his physical durability and speed beyond human limits. Automated ninja tools bounced off him. Explosive tags detonated against his skin with zero effect.
In a flash of lightning, he bypassed the perimeter and stood before Konoha's massive steel gates. He raised a single hand, extending four fingers.
Hell Thrust: Four-Finger Nukite.
With an earth-shattering roar, he drove his hand forward. The heavily fortified wall exploded inward, creating a massive, jagged breach.
From a nearby watchtower, Kakashi gripped the railing, his Sharingan spinning frantically. "This is hopeless," he muttered to Jiraiya. "He'll tear the village apart stone by stone."
Jiraiya, his face painted with the markings of Sage Mode, grimaced. He had just fought the Third Raikage for three hundred exhausting rounds. It didn't matter what Jiraiya hit him with; the monster just regenerated. Jiraiya and Tsunade had even prepared specialized Sealing Jutsu. They had managed to seal away a few lower-level Edo Tensei, but they simply lacked the manpower to pin down three more Kage-level titans while simultaneously fighting off the entire Cloud army.
It was a battle of attrition they were mathematically guaranteed to lose.
Tsunade closed her eyes. The time had come.
"Execute the Flame Plan," she whispered.
She turned to her assistant. "Shizune, are they all here?"
"Yes, Lady Tsunade. They are waiting on the balcony."
Tsunade leaped down to the Hokage's balcony. Standing before her were the sparks of the future: Naruto, Sakura, Shikamaru, Ino, Choji, Hinata, Kiba, Shino, Lee, Neji, and Tenten.
They were the Konoha 11. The seed of the Leaf.
Naruto, completely oblivious to the dire reality of the situation, punched his palm. "Alright! Let me at 'em! I'm gonna go bust up some lightning guys!"
"Naruto, shut up!" Shikamaru snapped, his voice sharp and utterly devoid of its usual lazy drawl. "Look around you. Read the room."
Naruto blinked, finally noticing the grim, defeated expressions on the faces of the Jonin, Shizune, and Tsunade.
Tsunade looked at the young shinobi, her eyes filled with a heartbreaking mixture of sorrow and fierce resolve.
"As you can see, the Cloud has breached our walls," Tsunade said, her voice echoing in the heavy silence. "And based on our tactical assessments... we are going to lose this battle. Konoha will fall."
A collective gasp rippled through the teenagers. Sakura covered her mouth. Hinata looked down.
"But the Will of Fire cannot be extinguished," Tsunade continued, her tone leaving no room for argument. "You are the hope of Konoha. I have prepped an elite Anbu squad to escort you out through the subterranean tunnels. As the seeds of this village, your only mission now is to survive."
Shikamaru clenched his fists. "Where do we go, Lady Hokage? The whole world is burning."
Tsunade looked toward the western horizon, toward the vast deserts.
"There is only one place left on this earth with the power to protect you," Tsunade said grimly. "You are going to Sunagakure."
