Chapter 287 - Chapter 286: The Achievement: The Cloak of Death!

If Salazar Slytherin truly was such a vile villain, would Godric Gryffindor and the others have been so blind as to become his closest friends and co-found Hogwarts with him?

As they were about to part ways, Dylan suddenly posed a question to Helena.

"Miss Helena, do you think pure-blood wizards or half-blood wizards are more gifted?"

Without a hint of prejudice, Helena pondered the question seriously for a moment before giving her answer.

"Based on my observations over the years, I would say half-bloods."

"Pure-blood wizards do generally possess powerful magical energy, but many of them are stubborn and aggressive, lacking in wisdom."

"Half-blood wizards, on the other hand, are more rational in their thinking and therefore more likely to achieve greater things."

Dylan simply nodded. It was just a passing thought, a question he'd asked on a whim. After all, there aren't many wizards in the world, and magic itself is such a personal, subjective thing. It often comes down to an individual's will and understanding, and the differences between one wizard and the next are so vast that it's hard to say how much bloodline really matters.

After bidding farewell to Helena, Dylan knew it was time to head back. As he was passing the fourth floor, he remembered Harry had asked him to fetch the Invisibility Cloak, so he made a quick stop by the one-eyed humpbacked witch statue.

"Dissendium."

With exams starting tomorrow, Dylan was likely the only one confident enough to be wandering the halls. He glanced around, making sure no one would see him until he emerged from the secret passage covered in dust, and then cast the spell to open the secret passage.

As the spell took effect, the one-eyed humpbacked witch statue slowly slid open, revealing the passage to Honeydukes for the first time.

Dylan didn't jump inside. He wasn't keen on getting a layer of dust on his robes. Instead, he simply crooked a finger. A faint, invisible wave of telekinetic force reached deep into the passage. A moment later, a strange-looking cloak, carried by that invisible force, floated out of the tunnel.

It was strange because from no angle could you see its front. Only the backside, revealed by its folds and creases, swayed in the air, looking like a few randomly stitched-together scraps with frayed, worn edges.

This was the Invisibility Cloak, one of the three Deathly Hallows. It's a genuinely useful object, though perhaps not as powerful as the Elder Wand or the Resurrection Stone. It only makes you visually invisible and can still be detected by spells like the Homunculus Charm or the Hominem Revelio spell. But it has no usage requirements, and the Summoning Charm can't touch it.

From a purely visual standpoint, it offers a truly perfect invisibility, as long as you don't pay attention to the footprints on the ground.

The moment it touched his hand, a refreshing coolness spread from his fingertips. The fabric was fine and smooth, with a texture unlike any mundane cloth. Dylan gently rubbed a corner of the cloak, thinking to himself that it would be a lovely blanket on a summer night.

And then, as he glanced down, another Collection Achievement popped up.

Just as he'd suspected from his divination, the look of surprise on his face as he emerged from the secret passage was all for another version of himself. But something about this didn't quite make sense. It was one thing for the founders' relics to trigger an achievement, but the Deathly Hallows were just a fairy tale. They had nothing to do with Death himself.

So why would the Invisibility Cloak trigger an achievement? And why didn't Voldemort's seven Horcruxes do the same? Was Voldemort really that lacking in status?

Dylan grumbled about the interface under his breath, balled up the Invisibility Cloak, shoved it in his pocket, and headed back to the dormitory.

Back in the common room, Harry and the others were all studying. A large group of them were hunched over tables, buried in thick books, their brows furrowed, hoping the information they were cramming would show up on tomorrow's exams.

When Harry saw Dylan return, he immediately closed his book and came over. After all, Dylan had promised to bring back his Invisibility Cloak.

"Here you go." Dylan pulled the cloak from his pocket and handed it to Harry.

"Thanks so much, Dylan!" Harry took the cloak, his face filled with gratitude.

After returning the Invisibility Cloak to Harry, Dylan went to his own bed, pulled the curtains closed, and began to check the information on his new achievement.

[Achievement]: The Cloak of Death!

[Description]: You have discovered the Invisibility Cloak, one of the Deathly Hallows! Legend has it that the one who collects all three Hallows will become the Master of Death, but legends are just that.

—Or are they?

[Requirement]: Discover and fully master the Invisibility Cloak, one of the Deathly Hallows. (1/1)

[Reward]: An Invisibility Cloak

Sitting on his bed, Dylan stared at the text on the screen for a long time, scratching his head, utterly confused.

That's it?

He had expected the reward for this achievement to be something like a master-level Disillusionment Charm or some other useful skill. When he saw the description, his heart had leaped, thinking it might actually give him a third of the power of Death. But then he saw the reward...

He was stunned.

Seriously?

Was this what they called false advertising with a dramatic pause?

But then Dylan pushed aside the potentially misleading description and thought about it. The reward itself wasn't bad. The interface's items were always of high quality. His briefcase, for example, had become his most useful spatial world.

So, this cloak was probably an improved version of Harry's. When you looked at it that way, it was actually better than a master-level Disillusionment Charm.

Even if he probably wouldn't ever need it himself, it was still a great addition to his collection and a perfect object to analyze for its mysterious properties.

With that thought, Dylan chose to claim the reward.

The next second, a hooded cloak appeared in his hands out of thin air.

This cloak looked different from Harry's. Harry's had a pattern on the inside and its outside was impossible to see, but this one was solid black on both sides.

That's right, both sides were pure black. It didn't look like an invisibility cloak at all! It just looked like a regular cloak.

Dylan turned it over and over in his hands, wondering if this was the interface's upgrade. Harry's cloak made it easy for the wearer to bump into things because they couldn't see themselves. This one at least let you see yourself, which was a definite plus.

He put the cloak on and looked down. He looked exactly the same, just with a black cloak on.

Oh.

Dylan leaned back against the headboard, debating whether to open the curtains and ask Harry if he could see him. But if Harry could, Obliviating him right before an exam felt a bit mean.

Just as he was about to use divination to see the outcome, a fluffy tail waved in front of him without warning.

"Coal, don't..."

Dylan's words got stuck in his throat. He turned to speak to Coal, but realized that part of his arm had overlapped with the cat, who had apparently climbed into his bed at some point!

What in the world?

Dylan's arm snapped back, so fast it created a gust of air. He clenched his hand into a tight fist, the familiar feeling of his palm telling him his hand was perfectly normal.

The moment was so bizarre. His pupils shrank, and his heart felt as if it were being squeezed by an invisible hand. His mind exploded with a jumble of thoughts: confusion, surprise, and a spark of incredible curiosity.

After a few seconds, his eyes settled on the cloak he was wearing. If anything was out of place, it was this cloak.

He blinked hard, trying to regain his composure. Then, he took a deep breath and slowly extended his hand toward Coal again. This time, his movements were cautious, his fingers trembling slightly.

When his hand landed on Coal's back, the familiar, fluffy, warm feeling was exactly the same as always.

Feeling the weight on his back, Coal simply raised his head lazily, rubbed his fluffy head against Dylan's wrist as if to say hello, and then curled up even tighter, oblivious to everything, and went back to his nap.

Dylan felt the gentle rise and fall of Coal's breathing under his palm, his brow furrowing as he fell into deep thought.

Why could his hand pass through the cat the first time, but not now? What was the difference between the two attempts?

He thought back carefully. The first time, he didn't know Coal was there and was focused on the mattress. This time, he knew exactly where the cat was...

Could that be it? Was it about his perception, his subjective intent?

As soon as the idea came to him, he decided to test it. He concentrated, silently thinking, "I can go through." Then, he slowly pressed his hand down.

And just like that, his hand felt nothing. It passed right through Coal's body and pressed against the mattress. He could even feel the hardness of the springs inside.

It works!

Dylan's eyes lit up. The first time he went through Coal was because he subconsciously believed only the bed was there. It would have been weird if he couldn't pass through. In his mind, the cat that he hadn't noticed "didn't exist," which is why he was able to pass right through it.

Just a moment ago, he knew Coal was there, and he thought he couldn't pass through, so he couldn't.

Now that he was actively thinking, "I can go through," he could even pass through the mattress!

To confirm his theory, Dylan did a few more tests. First, he tried to pass his hand through his own body. No matter how hard he concentrated, his hand hit an invisible wall and wouldn't move. It seemed his perception of himself was too ingrained to change.

Next, he used his magic to float off the bed and toward the top of the four-poster. The expected barrier didn't appear. His body passed through the bed's frame as if it were nothing but a thin mist. He floated around the room, looking down at the blankets on his bed and the suitcase in the corner. He could even see the tip of Coal's tail dangling from the side of the bed.

Then, he lowered his body and landed back on his bed.

It was confirmed. This Invisibility Cloak had the ability to remove physical barriers! Just like the Dementors and Coal's power!

With that in mind, Dylan immediately believed the cloak could also make him invisible. If it could eliminate physical contact, what was stopping it from making him unseen?

He did a few more tests using divination. When he tried the Summoning Charm, the cloak didn't budge. He cast a few normal defensive and offensive spells at it, and they just vanished as if they had been cast into an empty void.

However, the cloak seemed to have little resistance to powerful, destructive curses. When he tried the Severing Charm, it easily sliced a corner off the cloak. And when he used the Killing Curse, it instantly turned that small piece of cloth into a pile of scraps.

But what surprised Dylan the most was its concealment ability. He took out a blank piece of parchment and tapped it with his wand. Instantly, the surrounding environment appeared on the parchment, centered on his location, with small dots representing people. But where he should have been, in the exact center, was completely empty. Not a single trace.

The corners of Dylan's mouth curled up in a knowing smile.

Dylan set the parchment down, his fingertips tracing its smooth edge. The Invisibility Cloak's ability to eliminate physical barriers was certainly interesting and unique, but that was all it was. From his earlier divination tests, he knew this ability couldn't save him from a magical attack unless the spell was purely about physical impact. If a spell involved a magical energy blast or had a direct effect on the body, the cloak was useless.

As for its defensive abilities, as strong as they were, they couldn't withstand the Unforgivable Curses. That made it far inferior to his own master-level Shield Charm. The Shield Charm might not completely block the Unforgivable Curses, but it could significantly cushion the blow, giving him a chance to survive. This cloak, when faced with such powerful dark magic, was about as useful as a regular piece of cloth.

The only truly essential and core ability of this cloak was its concealment. Even Harry's ancient Invisibility Cloak would show up on a magical map like the Marauder's Map. The wearer's position would be clearly marked.
