Chapter 404 - Chapter 404: Marie: I’m Just Worried About My Life

For the Straw Hat Pirates, the internal politics of the Marines were of little concern. Their philosophy was simple: if the Marines came knocking at their door, they would simply fight back. Beyond that, the World Government's maneuvers had nothing to do with them.

However, Law could not help but feel a lingering sense of worry. He knew that if the Marines successfully recruited several top-tier powerhouses on the level of Yixiao, their military strength would expand at an unprecedented rate, posing a massive threat to all pirates. Yet, upon further reflection, he realized that individuals of such legendary power were rare. If the world were truly teeming with such experts, the seas would have descended into chaos long ago. Consequently, the Straw Hats quickly pushed the issue of the global military draft aside to focus on their meal and their daily routines.

Training remained a priority for several members of the crew. Brook had finished his special treatment, leaving his bones crystal clear, remarkably strong, and significantly more powerful. Both Jean Bart and Kaku had completed their specialized medicinal baths and were now focused on adapting to their newfound physical strength. Carl knew that once they fully mastered their power, they would be ready to "graduate" from his tutelage. He had taught them everything he could, offering suggestions for their growth while leaving the final decisions of their paths to them.

Zoro, ever the stoic and dedicated swordsman, continued his grueling exercise regime. He frequently sought Carl's guidance, especially after awakening his Conqueror's Haki in Dressrosa; he was now eager to master the technique. Tashigi trained alongside him, her competitive spirit flared as she refused to rest until Zoro did, often asking Carl for pointers to improve her skills.

To Carl's surprise, even Sanji had begun practicing in secret while working in the kitchen. Stimulated by the increasing strength of his crewmates, he approached Carl several times for private instruction. While Carl was pleased with everyone's dedication, the constant one-on-one sessions and the mental effort required to tailor advice for each person left him exhausted. After two days of this intense schedule, he even began to suffer from insomnia.

Fortunately, Robin offered to help. She provided a "knee pillow" service and used her excellent massage techniques to help Carl relax.

"Carl, you don't need to push yourself so hard," Robin said gently as she rubbed his temples while he rested his head on her lap. "Everyone has already graduated. You only need to give them a little guidance now."

"I can't do that," Carl replied seriously. "As their teacher, I have a responsibility to be thorough. Everyone is working so hard to get stronger; I can't let them down."

Carl's ambition was clear: if he could raise every crew member to the level of a Marine Admiral, the Straw Hats would truly be invincible. Since he had taken on the role of their mentor, he was determined to prove worthy of their trust.

"But I am quite worried about you," Robin whispered.

Carl looked up, but Robin's position made it difficult to see her face. He reached up and tenderly stroked her hair, enjoying the rare moment of peace.

The silence was broken by a knock on the door. Marie pushed the door open, carrying a bundle of bedding. She dropped it onto Carl's bed without a word and turned to leave.

"Marie?" Carl asked, sounding confused.

"Mr. Carl, I've decided I want a room to myself for a few days," Marie said as she closed the door behind her. "Sister Robin will stay here with you for the time being."

Outside, Marie walked away while nibbling on a biscuit. Though her face remained expressionless, she was tired of watching the two of them hesitate. She had long wanted her own room and decided to use this opportunity to push their relationship forward, hoping it might lead to a wedding feast sooner rather than later.

Inside the room, Carl sat up abruptly and looked at the extra quilt, then at Robin. Both of them felt their faces turn red with embarrassment.

"Marie is really making a mess of things," Carl stammered, feeling awkward.

"I don't mind," Robin said suddenly, her eyes meeting his with a serious expression.

Carl stared at her, his mind racing. He saw the anticipation in her eyes and realized that the "invisible wall" between them had finally been shattered by Marie's interference. He could no longer pretend to be confused about her feelings.

"Robin, wait for me. I'll be right back!" Carl said.

He rushed out of the room and found Franky. After hearing Carl's request, the shipwright grinned and got to work immediately. Moments later, he handed Carl two small, exquisite boxes. Carl hurried back to the room, where Robin was waiting anxiously, nervously fidgeting with her hands.

"Robin," Carl began, his voice shaking slightly. "I've always said I liked women who were gentle and considerate big sisters. You certainly fit the 'beautiful big sister' part, even if you can be a bit mysterious and have some strange hobbies. But...".

He opened the two boxes, revealing two delicate, beautiful rings.

"But... will you marry me?" Carl asked, his heart hammering against his ribs.

Robin looked at him with a satisfied smile. "Carl, really? Couldn't you have picked a more romantic place?".

Despite her teasing, she slowly raised her left hand. Carl slipped a ring onto her finger, and Robin did the same for him. They looked at each other and couldn't help but break into wide grins.

"Was that too hasty? Should it have been more grand?" Carl asked, feeling a bit embarrassed by the simplicity of it.

"No, this is perfect," Robin replied, looking down at her ring. "We are pirates and children of the sea. We don't need to be overly formal."
