Chapter 8 - The Little Hero

I woke up to something poking me. When I opened my eyes and woke up, I saw a small child with a stick in his hand. He was smiling broadly at me and kept poking me with the stick, my eyes widened in surprise. The boy laughed at my reaction. I put my index finger to my mouth, signaling to be quieter. Carefully standing up, I made my way to the window and saw that the sun had already set and night had fallen. The kid started hitting me on the back with a stick, but I tried to ignore his antics and started checking the area with my powers. I sensed that there weren't many people on the street and there were some people sitting on the first floor of a house. I jumped out of the window and landed on my feet. Immediately I was pierced with pain, as if a bolt of lightning had gone through my legs.

I staggered in pain for a few minutes, but soon I was able to walk normally. As I headed away from the village, I looked back at the window. The same boy was standing there, waving a stick at me and smiling. It was a good thing he hadn't yelled and brought the adults.

Miraculously unnoticed, I hid in the grass, waiting for the right moment. When I looked around, I noticed that the fields were planted as expected. My plan had worked like clockwork and the rumors had spread. All that remained was to nurture those fields and the job would be done. I lay in the grass for several hours until dusk fell and the lights in the houses went out. After making sure everyone was asleep, I headed for the fields. I was still hungry, and watering the fields with my energy was difficult. But the plants were growing, bursting out of the ground, illuminating their view to the world. I walked carefully through the field, spreading my energy while making sure no one noticed me.

I didn't notice the energy was nearing its end. I felt nauseous and my mind was foggy. My orientation was failing, and my normal vision was failing me, I could barely see anything in the darkness. Staggering, I still continued to spread the energy, there was still a little more to go. As soon as I finished, my legs couldn't take it and I collapsed from helplessness. As I stood up, I felt them shaking.

Because of my condition, I did not notice that far away from me, on the other side of the field, there was a man with a torch in his hands. I could not tell if it was a man or a woman. Even my inner vision was floating and I couldn't see clear images. I had to run, the benefit of my face not being visible. However, the man did not scream or yell. Through the light from the torch I saw that he was holding something out to me. We looked at each other in silence, and he put the thing on the ground and stepped back. I waited until he was far enough away so that the torchlight would not shine on my face. As I approached the thing left behind, I realized it was a bowl of round fruit vegetables, not the kind that grew in the fields.

As I picked it up, I realized it looked like a potato. I took a bite, and it tasted the same. I sat and ate warily, expecting him to run and pounce on me. But he stood still. I could not see him or his face. I finished the rest and put the rest in my bag and ran away, hoping that he would not follow me. I ran until my legs started to get stiff and I fell to the ground. There, on the ground, I remained lying. I took some potatoes out of my bag and started eating, and as soon as I had finished everything I fell asleep in the field.

I was awakened by the sun's rays, which were trying to penetrate my eyes through my eyelids. I woke up and remembered the night before. I didn't know if it was a dream or just a hallucination. It was possible that I'd used up so much of my energy that I'd started seeing images, and I'd eaten raw vegetables from the field.

I got up, shook the dirt off my clothes, and went to investigate the village. Suddenly, I realized that I had run quite far away from the village last night. After a while, I reached the village and started looking around with my magic vision. The atmosphere was joyful: everyone was having fun and rejoicing. I realized that my mission was accomplished and headed towards the next village. When I found a path, I followed it.

I reflected on what had happened and circulated the energy within me. I needed to eat more, next time I would steal food from houses to feed myself. Catching snorglers and making a fire to roast them was dangerous, so I had to resort to those methods.

I walked and walked, but the village did not appear on the horizon. By the end of the day, I discovered that the trail had been leading nowhere all this time. I stood at the end of the trail, and there were only dense fields beyond, and no hint of a path. Why did this trail even exist? Who walks on it? I got angry and started angrily stomping my foot on the ground and kicking the grass. I cursed whoever had trampled this path. After wasting the whole day, I headed back towards the village.

I was very hungry, so I decided to eat. I caught a snorgl, their burrows even reached here. But why? There's nothing to steal here. Or is there something in these dense fields? I was too lazy to find out, so I built a small fire and roasted a snorgl. I ate and moved on my way, putting out the fire before I did so. With renewed vigor, I continued my mission.

By morning I reached the village again. When I went around the village, I found a new path, but it led back to the previous village. To avoid confusion, I used my spear to mark the paths so that I would not get lost. After a few more laps, I found the trail. I hoped very much that it led to another village, for I would waste time again. While I am walking here and wasting time, the villagers are starving and dying.

This time the road was unexpectedly long. By the end of the day, I still hadn't reached any place. This time I caught some snorglers, roasted them and ate them. I lay down under a tree away from the trail and fell asleep, and at dawn I continued on my way.

Spending days and weeks traveling was pretty boring, so I circulated the energy within myself. I decided to experiment and discovered something new. Raising my palm to the sky, I released the energy and started trying to control it. Squeezing it into a single point, after a few tries I succeeded. A small invisible blob of energy lay in my hands, emitting light. I released it, and it dissipated. It was something new. I decided that I would play with it later, when I was done saving the villages, because creating energy balls wastes energy.

By nightfall I reached the village after all. It was bigger than all the other villages before it. The first thing I did was scout the area: the fields were planted, the people were asleep, the area was clear, which meant it was time to start the mission.

I nurtured the fields as usual. No surprises this time - no one woke up. Walking around the village, I found a storehouse with provisions. The door to it was locked, but I needed to get in. I tried to find a window or something, but to no avail. Breaking down the door would be noisy, so I had to climb into the houses.

Climbing through a window into a random house, I tried to act as carefully as possible. There was nothing in the house, which surprised me. Apparently, things were pretty bad in this village. After looking through the rest of the houses with the ability, I found that they were empty as well. The supply depot was empty as well. There was nothing to steal, so I picked some fruit from the fields and put it in my bag.

I was interested in one of the trees. I decided to try the same thing with it as with the fields. When I rinsed the tree with energy, I saw it glow. I realized that I had to get out of here, because that glow could wake people up. Some fruit was growing on the tree, so I quickly climbed up, picked a few fruits and ran away. Fortunately, no one woke up. I tasted one of the fruits, and it was surprisingly delicious. It tasted like a mixture of apple and pear, and the fruit was flat and oblong.

After a small meal of fruit, I found the trail, marked it and moved on.

...

It's been about three weeks. During that time I had performed miracles in twelve villages. At the twelfth, I decided to end the journey - it had taken too long, and the temperature had dropped considerably. The cold at night was getting to my bones. I stole a couple of warm clothes, but they were not enough. The return trip took another week. I headed not to my village, but to my forest. At my "camp" I left the stolen items, except for my cloak, and headed back to the village.

I was met by Earl, Klim and Falco. Fortunately, the village was fine. No vile barbarians of Frousal had attacked during my absence. Though how could I stand up to them?

Earl told me about the miracles that had happened in the twelve villages, but he also mentioned news that made me sad. When I was nurturing the fields, I had been seen several times by the locals. Earl reported that eyewitnesses have seen an unknown small creature appearing near the nurtured fields on the night of the miracle. Many believe that this creature is a messenger of a god who performs these miracles.

The main thing was that I wasn't recognized, but the fact that I was noticed was unpleasant. I told Earl a made-up story about how I had scoured Arshard and the surrounding town and found my cloak there. He believed my story, and the prank went well.

On a peaceful note, I ate dinner and peacefully went to sleep in my bed. It had been a long journey, and I needed to rest.....
