Chapter 275 - Countess Drusilla, vampire lady

The large building, which looked like a medieval castle, came into view through the trees.

Not a real castle—the architecture was wrong for that, too modern despite its Gothic pretensions. But "castle" was what everyone called it anyway.

A massive stone structure built in the 1950s by some wealthy eccentric who'd wanted a fortress in the wilderness. Four stories of dark stone and narrow windows, surrounded by walls that served no defensive purpose in the modern era but looked appropriately dramatic.

The vampires had added their own modifications over the decades. Additional fortifications, underground expansions, and security systems that combined modern technology with supernatural detection methods.

Marcus approached the main gate. The guards recognized him and opened without question, their pale faces showing the particular stillness that marked vampires who'd stopped pretending to be human when no mortals were watching.
