Chapter 33 - Chapter 33 – The Beginning of Virecan

The moment Darian crossed the academy gates, he felt it.

Pressure.

Not physical—something deeper.

An invisible current flowed through the air of Virecan Academy, dense with mana and intent. Every stone, every tower, every passing student carried traces of power. It was subtle, but unmistakable.

This place was different from the outside world.

Dangerous.

Interesting.

Darian's gray eyes swept across the courtyard as students moved between pathways in small groups. Noble crests flashed on uniforms, laughter echoed near the fountains, and the occasional burst of mana illuminated training grounds in the distance.

To anyone else, it might have looked lively.

To him, it looked like a battlefield hidden beneath politeness.

"Please wait here."

The arcane warden who had escorted them gestured toward a circular platform near the courtyard center before walking away toward the main hall.

Marie stepped beside Darian quietly. "It seems the Council intends to receive you personally."

"Is that unusual?"

"For a first-year student?" She hesitated. "Very."

Darian remained silent.

Of course it was.

He already knew enough about this world to understand one thing—Virecan Academy never moved without reason.

If the Council was involved, then either his title as crown prince mattered more than expected...

Or they had sensed something strange about him.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

The second possibility annoyed him.

A sudden commotion interrupted his thoughts.

Several students near the fountain had begun whispering while glancing toward him.

"That's him?"

"The Ashthorn prince?"

"I heard he almost died on the journey here."

"No, no—I heard his mana core shattered."

Darian ignored them.

Rumors spread faster than fire in places like this.

Useful to know.

Annoying to deal with.

Marie, however, looked visibly irritated. Her fingers tightened slightly around the reins she still held.

"They speak too freely."

"Let them."

Darian's tone remained indifferent.

"The more people underestimate me, the easier things become."

Marie looked at him for a moment before quietly lowering her gaze.

Again.

That strange feeling.

The old Darian would've reacted differently—cold pride, anger, arrogance.

But this version of him...

He sounded calculating.

Before she could think further, footsteps echoed across the courtyard.

Three figures emerged from the grand staircase ahead.

The first was an elderly man in dark-blue robes embroidered with silver runes. His long white hair flowed down his back, and despite his age, his sharp amber eyes radiated pressure strong enough to silence the nearby students instantly.

Beside him walked a woman wearing a crimson academy uniform lined with black fur at the collar. She appeared no older than twenty-five, yet the badge pinned near her shoulder marked her as faculty.

The third figure—

Darian's eyes paused briefly.

A young man with black hair and calm blue eyes.

Simple appearance.

Ordinary posture.

Yet the moment Darian saw him, fragments of memory surfaced violently inside his head.

The protagonist.

Ethan Vale.

The true main character of this world.

The one destined to rise from nothing and eventually reshape the continent itself.

For a brief second, Darian felt reality become strangely distant.

This wasn't a novel anymore.

These people were real.

And standing before him was the man around whom the world's fate originally revolved.

Ethan's gaze met Darian's calmly.

Curious.

Observant.

Not hostile.

Yet Darian noticed something immediately—

The mana around Ethan flowed unnaturally smoothly, almost as if the world itself favored him.

So this is what plot armor looks like in reality.

Interesting.

The elderly mage stepped forward first.

"I am Headmaster Alaric Vayne."

His voice carried authority without needing volume.

"Welcome to Virecan Academy, Crown Prince Darian of Ashthorn."

Darian inclined his head slightly. "Headmaster."

Alaric observed him carefully.

Far too carefully.

It felt less like a greeting and more like inspection.

"The Council was informed of your condition before arrival," the headmaster continued. "Yet from what I can see... the reports were inaccurate."

Darian met his gaze without flinching.

"People exaggerate easily."

For the first time, a faint smile touched the old man's lips.

"Indeed they do."

The crimson-haired woman stepped forward next.

"Professor Selena Mireth. I'll be overseeing first-year evaluations this term."

Unlike the headmaster, her eyes held open suspicion.

Especially while looking at Darian.

Or more specifically—

At the mana surrounding him.

"Your Highness," she said slowly, "would you mind explaining why your mana fluctuations resemble someone recovering from core instability... despite standing perfectly healthy before us?"

Marie stiffened slightly.

Darian, however, remained calm.

So they noticed already.

Annoying.

The academy's higher-ups were more perceptive than he hoped.

"I nearly died recently," Darian answered

smoothly. "Recovery tends to leave traces."

Professor Selena narrowed her eyes.

Clearly unconvinced.

But before she could press further—

"Professor."

The headmaster's voice stopped her.

"Enough for now."

A brief silence followed.

Then Alaric turned slightly toward the black-haired young man beside him.

"This is Ethan Vale," he said. "One of this year's scholarship admits."

Ethan gave a polite nod. "It's an honor to meet you, Your Highness."

Darian stared at him quietly for a moment before replying.

"Likewise."

The two exchanged calm expressions.

Yet beneath the surface—

Both were evaluating the other carefully.

Ethan felt it instinctively.

Something about the prince felt... wrong.

Not evil.

Not threatening.

Just difficult to understand.

His eyes carried a strange weight no first-year student should possess.

Meanwhile Darian's thoughts moved elsewhere entirely.

So this is the beginning.

The academy arc.

The place where alliances form.

Where monsters hide behind noble smiles.

Where the protagonist begins his rise.

And where countless important figures would soon gather beneath one roof.

A slow realization settled into his mind.

This academy wasn't merely a school.

It was the center of the continent's future.

Which meant—

Control over Virecan meant influence over everything that came after.

For the first time since arriving in this world, something resembling genuine interest flickered within Darian's eyes.

Maybe this life won't be as boring as I thought.
