"Energy with special properties derived from Normal-type energy?"
After hearing Silas's detailed explanation, Cynthia frowned slightly.
If you take that statement a bit further, it actually implies the existence of a new Pokémon type.
And Silas wasn't the only one with such an idea. The unique energy traits of the still-unconfirmed Steel-type and Fairy-type were already being observed in many Pokémon, and numerous scholars were conducting studies to verify their existence.
"The new regional forms of Meowth and Copperajah found in the Galar region?" Cynthia asked suddenly.
"Exactly. Those two are solid evidence. The seventeenth type might soon be officially recognized."
Silas nodded.
First came Steel, then Fairy—quite a logical sequence.
The key issue was that the difference between Fairy-type and Normal-type energy was so subtle that it was difficult to distinguish between them.
And come to think of it, the fact that Steel-type wasn't identified earlier was surprising on the surface—but also understandable.
The main reason was that before this, there hadn't been any Pokémon that solely exhibited Steel-type traits.
Excluding Mega Evolutions like Aggron, as well as a few Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, truly pure Steel-type Pokémon were extremely rare.
The Galarian Meowth line, the Cufant line, and the Klink line—that was about it. Even if you included Mawile, there would only be four.
Among them, the Galarian Meowth and Cufant lines were new Pokémon recently discovered in the Galar region.
That meant, as far as the people of this world were concerned, only Klink could truly be considered a pure Steel-type Pokémon, while Mawile—with its dual Steel/Fairy typing—could only be counted as "half."
Of course, that was from Silas's meta-awareness as someone with knowledge beyond this world.
To the people within the Pokémon world, Klink—this mysterious Pokémon that appeared about a hundred years ago in Chargestone Cave—was classified as an Electric-type Pokémon.
After all, Chargestone Cave was a natural magnetic field, and the Klink family's energy readings were quite similar to those of Magnezone.
However, due to a misleading Same-Type Attack Bonus, their Electric-type moves were oddly weak. Because of this, people considered Klink and its evolutions to be rather mediocre Pokémon.
If it weren't for the fact that Klink could evolve twice, its reputation would be even lower.
As for Mawile, which doesn't evolve, its situation was even worse. Classified as the Deceiver Pokémon, it was currently considered a Dark-type, and pathetically weak at that.
Although, to be fair, even in the future, its base form wouldn't be much better.
"A new Pokémon type, huh? That would shake the world again," Cynthia remarked thoughtfully.
The last time a new type was confirmed was over thirty years ago, when the Dark type was proven to exist. Though Cynthia hadn't lived through that era, she could easily imagine the uproar that discovery must have caused.
The discovery of a new Pokémon type could change everything—from our understanding of Pokémon on a small scale, to the balance of power across the world on a larger one.
Even just the introduction of new type matchups could alter the outcome of countless battles.
Silas nodded silently in agreement.
Of course, such a new type wouldn't appear overnight—neither Steel nor the still-unclear Fairy type.
Proving the existence of a new type was an enormous project. Just the reclassification of move types, Pokémon typings, and the collection of power data alone was enough to make one's head spin.
Not to mention the sheer difficulty of the process—it was practically the same as rewriting the fundamental laws of nature.
This kind of research was completely different from something like Pokémon evolution, which could be backtracked once you knew the result. Here, universality was the key—without that, nothing made sense.
That was one of the reasons Silas never chose the researcher's path. It was simply too difficult. The amount of effort required was even greater than that of a top-level Trainer.
His goal was to become a Pokémon Master, not a Pokémon Professor—he didn't have the time or energy to climb both mountains.
Even Professor Oak, despite being a powerhouse in his youth, saw his battling skills decline once he devoted himself to research. Silas figured that even with his advantage from being reborn, he wasn't nearly that much of a prodigy.
"But that doesn't have much to do with Togekiss and the others. The energy fluctuation readings are completely different," Silas said, steering the topic back to where they started.
When two people with vast knowledge talked, this kind of tangent was inevitable—unless the topic was urgent, they were bound to wander.
Sitting across from him, Cynthia fell deep into thought again.
Pokémon training was a serious matter, after all. This wasn't her indecisiveness acting up again—she truly needed to think carefully.
Silas didn't mind and continued eating. Cynthia might have had a small appetite, but he definitely didn't—he wasn't done yet.
More than half an hour later, Silas was on his third drink when Cynthia finally came out of her thoughts.
"Sorry," she said apologetically, "I've kept you waiting."
"It's fine," Silas replied generously. "I don't have much going on these days anyway."
(Granted, he was being generous mostly because it was Cynthia. If it had been Brock, he'd have smacked them upside the head and reminded them who had the upper hand here.)
"I've thought it through," Cynthia said at last. "I'd like to purchase the recipe for the energy cubes you specifically made for them."
By "them," she meant Togepi, Togetic, and Togekiss.
Silas was surprised.
Compared to her earlier proposal, this one left out quite a few things—like specialized nutrition formulas for targeted training.
But in truth, the Pokéblock formula was the real key. It was the only one closely tied to the Fairy-type, while the other formulas were mere add-ons. Even without Silas's help, Cynthia had the skill to easily acquire or make those herself.
"What's wrong? Surprised?" Cynthia asked with a playful smile.
"I am," Silas admitted, adjusting his expression so he wouldn't look rude.
There was no point in denying it—he really was surprised.
It wasn't a big deal that Cynthia wanted to raise a Togekiss.
In his memory, even without his "butterfly effect," Cynthia's main team already included one. At most, he'd only accelerated that process a little. After all, the concept of Friendship Evolution had likely been introduced a bit earlier thanks to him.
What really shocked him was that Cynthia actually agreed to use his Pokeblock formula — something based purely on speculation about a newly classified type.
Ordinary people would have steered clear of such an unproven experiment.
Silas knew he and Cynthia were acquainted — they had Professor Rowan as a mutual connection, and since he had admired her in his past life, he naturally wanted to get along well with her but none of that explained why she'd trust his experimental recipe.
At best, they were just friends who got along well.
He'd honestly thought she would drop the idea after hearing his explanation.
It wasn't as if there weren't other Trainers who had raised Togekiss. Given Cynthia's background, finding one would've been easy.
"The last time Grandpa lent you that Togetic for your research on the Friendship Evolution theory, Mr. Berlitz was in charge of the data recording," Cynthia said. "According to his analysis, your Togetic's energy output showed general compatibility across the species."
So Cynthia wasn't trusting Silas purely out of faith.
While that relationship helped, what really convinced her was the judgment of Mr. Berlitz, along with her own long period of observation.
Mr. Berlitz one of Professor Rowan's assistants though officially an assistant, was absolutely of Professor-level expertise.
He simply hadn't gone through the certification process because he didn't need to.
That might sound strange, since earning a Professor title was every researcher's dream. But for Mr. Berlitz, research was purely a passion. He did it because he wanted to, not for recognition.
And that wasn't false modesty the Berlitz name said it all.
The Berlitz family of the Sinnoh region was one of its wealthiest and most influential clans, with a history stretching back over 200 years. Their holdings included a booming family conglomerate, luxury hotels across Sinnoh, and a mansion in Sandgem Town. They were among the founders of the Sinnoh Pokémon League.
Beyond providing League funding, the Berlitz family had also supported numerous research projects, and many of its members were leading scholars in Pokémon studies.
Simply put in Sinnoh, whether someone could become a recognized Pokémon Professor often depended, at least in part, on the Berlitz family's influence.
So yes, Mr. Berlitz had every right and reason to say he didn't need any official doctorate — his research was done purely out of personal interest.
"Wait — Mr. Berlitz came all the way from Sinnoh to Kanto?" Silas raised an eyebrow, surprised.
