Chapter 12 - chapter 12: Heavenly Despair Devouring Python

Chapter 12 : Heavenly Despair Devouring Python

The structure towered at least fifteen meters high, its surface covered in intricate carvings partially obscured by what appeared to be living vegetation. Closer inspection revealed these were not plants but something organic and unsettling vein-like structures that pulsed faintly with an inner light, spreading across the door's surface like a parasitic network. The design beneath these growths was undeniably artistic and purposeful flowing script in no language Bai Yuexian recognized intertwined with depictions of creatures both familiar and utterly alien.

"Ancient," he murmured, tracing the edge of a carving with his fingertip. "Pre-dating the Immortal Ascension Era, perhaps even the Primordial Formation Age."

The door itself appeared to be made of a single slab of stone impossible to move by ordinary means. No visible mechanism or handle presented itself. Only the cryptic symbols and those disturbing vein-like growths adorned its surface.

Hesitantly, Bai Yuexian placed his palm flat against the cold stone, his cultivation sense probing gently for any trace of lingering formations or energy patterns.

The response was immediate and overwhelming.

A deafening grinding sound filled the chamber as ancient mechanisms awakened from millennia of slumber. The door shuddered beneath his touch, dislodging centuries of accumulated dust and debris. The vein-like structures rippled and pulsed with increased intensity, glowing brighter as the massive stone slab began to move.

Bai Yuexian leapt backward, spear raised defensively as the door slowly parted down the middle, revealing only impenetrable darkness beyond. The grinding continued for nearly a minute before the doors stood fully open, leaving a yawning black void where once solid stone had been.

From that void came a rush of air not stale as might be expected from a sealed chamber, but cold and vibrant with energy. The cultivation-sensitive meridians in Bai Yuexian's body tightened in response to the dense death qi carried on that ethereal wind. The pressure of it was palpable, pressing against his protective azure essence like physical weight.

Despite every instinct warning against it, Bai Yuexian stepped forward. Whether driven by cultivator's curiosity or some deeper compulsion, he found himself drawn to what lay beyond. Clutching his spear tightly, he crossed the threshold into absolute darkness.

The space beyond swallowed light completely. Even the crystal formations that had illuminated the bone chamber seemed unable to penetrate this profound blackness. Bai Yuexian retrieved a spirit-glowing lamp from his spatial ring a cultivation tool designed to provide light in environments that resisted natural illumination.

As the lamp's gentle radiance spread outward, Bai Yuexian's breath caught in his throat.

Before him stretched a vast chamber, larger even than the bone field he had traversed. At its center lay a pool of liquid so dark it appeared to devour the lamplight rather than reflect it. Occasional ripples disturbed its surface, though no wind or movement could account for them. Where the black liquid met the stone edges of its basin, frost formed in intricate patterns, suggesting temperatures far below freezing despite the ambient warmth of the chamber.

Streaks of deep ocean blue swirled within the darkness of the pool, creating mesmerizing patterns that seemed to move with purpose and intelligence. The death qi he had sensed earlier emanated from this liquid in concentrated waves, so potent that frost began forming on Bai Yuexian's robes as he approached.

Like the outer chamber, this one too was decorated with the remains of the dead skeletons arranged around the pool's perimeter as though they had been drawn to it in their final moments. Yet these remains seemed different many wore fragments of ancient armor or clutched weapons that had somehow resisted complete deterioration. Warriors, perhaps, or guardians.

As Bai Yuexian moved closer to the pool, the frost underfoot grew thicker. Ice crystals formed with each breath he exhaled. The death qi intensified until it became difficult to maintain his protective essence without active concentration.

And then, without warning, a voice resonated directly within his mind.

"Ohh... finally, after three thousand years of waiting, a human has come." The voice was melodic yet malevolent, distinctly feminine but layered with something ancient and inhuman. "Even though it's weak."

A shiver that had nothing to do with the cold ran down Bai Yuexian's spine. He whirled around, spear raised defensively as his eyes searched the darkness beyond his lamp's illumination.

"Who's there?" he demanded, his voice steady despite the primal fear clawing at the edges of his consciousness. "Show yourself!"

Movement in the shadows drew his attention upward, and what he saw there nearly stopped his heart.

Coiled around massive stone pillars that supported the chamber's ceiling was a serpent of impossible size. Its obsidian-black scales shimmered like polished onyx in the faint light, each larger than Bai Yuexian's hand. Veins of glowing violet energy pulsed beneath that armor-like hide, tracing patterns that corresponded to no known cultivation meridians.

The creature's head alone was the size of a carriage, adorned with jagged horns that curved backward from its skull. Razor-sharp fangs gleamed wetly as its massive jaws parted slightly. But most terrifying were its eyes ancient orbs that burned with cold fire, fixing him with a gaze that seemed to penetrate to his very soul.

Ethereal tendrils of cosmic energy swirled around its colossal form, reminiscent of the primordial chaos energies spoken of in the oldest cultivation texts. Each subtle movement of its body radiated both majesty and menace, suggesting a being born not from natural evolution but from the fundamental forces of creation and destruction themselves.

Only as his initial shock subsided did Bai Yuexian notice the chains enormous links of some dark metal that bound the serpent to four massive black pillars arranged around the chamber. The chains glowed with suppression formations of incredible complexity, their power evident even to his limited perception.

Bai Yuexian stumbled backward, losing his footing and falling hard onto the frost-covered stone. His spear clattered beside him, the sound echoing through the chamber like mocking laughter.

After several seconds of stunned silence, he gathered his courage and spoke. "Was that... was that voice in my mind yours?"

"Yes," came the immediate reply, the feminine tone stronger now, tinged with both amusement and irritation.

Swallowing hard, Bai Yuexian pushed himself back to his feet, retrieving his spear with as much dignity as he could muster. "What did you mean, no one has come in over three thousand years? And... and how can you speak directly into my mind?"

The massive serpent's head lowered slightly, bringing those terrible eyes closer to his level. The temperature around him plummeted further, ice crystals forming in the air itself.

"Tch... human, you have a lot of questions," the voice resonated in his mind, carrying notes of condescension and begrudging interest. "I can answer every question of yours if you can free me from this prison."

Bai Yuexian's grip tightened on his spear. "Free you? Do you think of me as crazy? Free you so you can kill me and go on your way? How could I even free something like you? I'm just at the ninth level of Vital Essence Tempering realm, barely powerful enough to stand in your presence, let alone affect those chains."

A sound like distant thunder reverberated through the chamber the creature's approximation of laughter.

"You are quite cunning, child," the voice acknowledged. "But I will not go back on my words. I promise. And I know how you can free me from these chains. If you release me, I can guide you through these ruins to claim all the treasures hidden within."

Bai Yuexian's analytical mind raced through possibilities. "How can I possibly believe you won't break your word? You seem powerful enough to kill me like an ant beneath your coils. And what's to stop you from trapping me in these ruins once I've served your purpose?"

The massive serpent shifted slightly, chains rattling with a sound like avalanches. "It is good that you know your place in the order of power," the voice approved. "But I speak truth. I will not betray you. I have waited too long for this opportunity. If you require assurance..." There was a momentary pause. "We can form a life-and-death contract, binding for one hundred years."

Shock rippled through Bai Yuexian at this suggestion. Life-and-death contracts were among the most serious and inviolable pacts in cultivation society binding the very souls of the participants and ensuring that betrayal meant certain death for the violator. That such a majestic and clearly powerful entity would offer this level of assurance to someone of his cultivation level was almost inconceivable.

"You must be truly desperate to leave this place," he observed cautiously.

"Three thousand years of imprisonment would make anyone desperate," the voice replied, a hint of genuine emotion breaking through its majestic tone.

Bai Yuexian considered his options carefully. If he refused, he might never find his way out of these ruins alive. If he accepted and was betrayed despite the contract... but no, life-and-death contracts were fundamentally unbreakable. Even immortal cultivators feared their binding power.

"Very well," he decided, straightening his posture. "We will form the life-and-death contract first. You will guide me to all treasures within these ruins and ensure my safe passage out. In return, I will free you from your chains by whatever method you instruct."

The massive coils shifted again, and Bai Yuexian felt a distinct impression of satisfaction from the creature.

"I am the Heavenly Despair Devouring Python," the voice announced with unmistakable pride.

Bai Yuexian's brow furrowed. In all his knowledge from his current life's studies and the memories of his previous owrner he had never encountered any reference to such a lineage of spiritual beasts. This suggested either extreme rarity or deliberate suppression of knowledge regarding this creature's kind.

"I am Bai Yuexian," he responded with formal courtesy. "May I know your name?"

"I have no personal name," the python replied. "I am the Queen of the Heavenly Despair Devouring Pythons."

Bai Yuexian nodded slowly. "Very well. Let us proceed with the life-and-death contract."

At his words, the python lowered her massive head until it hovered just above the frozen ground before him. Despite her bound state, she still exuded overwhelming power and majesty.

"Draw forth your soul essence and blood essence," she instructed. "Both are required for the binding to take hold."

With practiced concentration, Bai Yuexian formed a specific hand seal and channeled his cultivation into the center of his being. Drawing forth soul essence was dangerous and painful few cultivators below Essence purification and crystallization realm would risk it outside of the most serious circumstances. Yet he had little choice now.

A small mote of gold and dark light materialized between his palms his soul essence, the most fundamental expression of his spiritual identity. Next, he bit his thumb until blood welled from the wound, allowing three drops to fall upon the soul essence. The two substances swirled together, creating a mesmerizing pattern of light and liquid.

Before him, the python performed a similar ritual. A significantly larger sphere of violet-black energy condensed before her massive jaws her soul essence, ancient and terrifying in its density. From somewhere beneath her scales, a drop of midnight-blue blood emerged, merging with the soul essence and creating patterns of such complexity that Bai Yuexian's eyes could barely track their movements.

"Repeat after me," the python commanded, and began intoning words in a language Bai Yuexian had never heard syllables that seemed to bend reality around them as they were uttered.

He repeated each phrase carefully, feeling the power building with every word. Though he did not understand the language, he sensed the binding nature of the oath promises of mutual aid, restrictions against betrayal, consequences for violation that would strike at the very core of their beings.

As the final syllable fell from his lips, the two essence mixtures rose into the air between them and merged in a flash of blinding light. Bai Yuexian felt something wrap around his soul an invisible chain linking him irrevocably to the ancient creature before him. The sensation was neither painful nor pleasant, merely a profound awareness of connection that had not existed moments before.

When the light faded, both essences had disappeared, consumed by the contract's formation.

"Now the contract is done," the python stated with finality. "It is your time to free me."

Bai Yuexian took a deep breath, still adjusting to the strange sensation of the soul bond. "Very well. Tell me what I must do."
