After hanging up the phone, Adam returned to the VIP ward. He joined Leonard for a video call, waving hello to the friends and family on the other end celebrating Emma's first birthday. đ
The call ended with Phoebe's fiancĂ©, Mike (aka "Green Ant-Man"), looking like he wanted to say something but holding back. Adam noticed it but wasn't about to pry. Lately, he had way too much on his plate to care. If Mike didn't spill, Adam wasn't gonna ask. đ
It's probably just wedding stuff anyway. Most likely, Princess Consuela Banana Hammock (Phoebe's fancy new pre-wedding name) stirred up some drama again, and Big Diaper Bag (Mike's retaliatory nickname) was either plotting revenge or trying to smooth things over. Whatever. They'd figure it out without Adam's helpâthey always did.
He'd figured Matthew wouldn't get back to him with news until later, but wow, Matthew was faster than Adam expected. Guess Lily wasn't kidding when she complained about their lovey-dovey flaws not being so flawless after all. đ
Hmm⊠it's not a physical issue, thoughâmore of a mental one. When you've been in love too long and too mushy, foreplay just flies out the window. For Matthew and Lily, it's usually one flirty, mischievous glance, and boomâthey're tangled up in each other the next second. At most, they'd toss out a quick:
"Wanna do it?"Â
"Sure!"Â
That awkward, no-frills vibe wouldn't faze Leonard, though. He's the king of foreplayâalways putting in the effort. But nobody's perfect. Outside of those spicy moments, Leonard's not as attentive to his wife as Matthew is. Not surprising, really. Matthew and Lily are soulmates, while Leonard and Penny? More like a slow grind with little emotional spark. Over time, cracks show upâshocker. đ
Adam's mind wandered through these random thoughts as he picked up Matthew's call.
"That was fast!"Â
"I'm always lightning quick!"Â
On the other end, Matthew had no clue about Adam's wild tangents. He was just thrilled to help his buddy out with some intel. "Adam, I asked around, and there's this one guy who's perfectâlike, super perfect. Just a tiny flaw, though. Not sure if you're cool with it?"Â
"Tell me more!" Adam perked up, intrigued.Â
"His name's Mike Ross," Matthew said. "Total genius, just like youâphotographic memory and all. Aced the LSAT with a casual 180. If you want, he's got time to tutor Jill. Plus, word is he's a decent guy. Oh, and get thisâhe's pretty good-looking too!"Â
"Sounds flawless!" Adam was impressed. Sure, it was wild that this Mike Ross had a photographic memory too, but in a mashup world of genius-packed TV dramas, it wasn't that weird. "So, the flaw you mentioned⊠he's not from Harvard Law?"Â
"Yup," Matthew chuckled over the line. "Not just thatâhe's not from any law school."Â
"So what's he do?" Adam's curiosity spiked.Â
"WellâŠ" Matthew hesitated, sounding a bit sheepish. "Adam, you know the pressure we face with exams in this field, right?"Â
"Of course. That senior from your wedding? Unforgettable." Adam nodded.Â
"Yeah, the stress is unreal. So, naturally, there's a gray-area gig in this industry," Matthew sighed. "Some crazy-smart test-takers step in to take exams for others."Â
"Proxy testing, huh?" Adam laughed. "I get it. Any field with a licensing exam has that going on."Â
"Exactly, you get it!" Matthew relaxed. "This Mike Ross is one of those test-taking geniuses. No Harvard Law, no law school at all, but with his skillsâsame as yoursâhe can score whatever he wants. He's been proxy testing for cash."Â
"He's not doing it just for himself, though, right?" Adam grinned. "Otherwise, knowing you, you wouldn't say he's a good guy."Â
"Ugh," Matthew sighed again. "Every family's got its struggles. He's making money to support his grandma. I don't love what he's doing, but I get it. Here's the thingâif he tutors Jill, she'd get top-notch help. Harvard Law wouldn't be a pipe dream anymore. And he'd get a shot at leaving the illegal stuff behind, a fresh start. Adam, if you can, give him a chance. Pull him up."Â
"I'll think about it," Adam nodded. "If he's really like you say, I'd be happy to give him a shot."Â
They chatted a bit more before hanging up.Â
"Run a check on this guy," Adam said, immediately calling his security team with the order.Â
With how things had evolved, Adam's security crew had expanded multiple times. Led by an old cop Kate had recommended, they were a talented bunchâinvestigation skills off the charts.Â
The next day, Adam had a detailed report in hand.Â
In the file, Mike Ross had a soft, friendly faceânot the bad-guy type at all. His situation matched what Matthew had said. He mostly checked Adam's boxes.Â
But, of course, there were complications.Â
"Yup, more messy nonsense," Adam muttered, frowning.Â
Bingo! Mike Ross himself wasn't the issueâhis friend circle was. With his talent, the reason he never made it to Harvard Law, or even graduated college, was because he got caught proxy testing math for a roommate. That sent him down this shady path.Â
In one gig, he tested for the dean's daughter, got busted by the dean, and was expelled. And that roommate who tanked his future? Graduated and became a Heisenberg-style "success story."Â
With friends like that, Mike could get dragged into some deep criminal mess any second. No way Adam was letting someone like that near Jill! đĄÂ
"Matthew, look for someone else," Adam said, shelving Mike Ross for now and asking Matthew to keep hunting.Â
"Mike Ross won't work?" Matthew asked with a wry smile.Â
"NopeâŠ" Adam explained the situation.Â
Matthew got it right away. Your friends shape you, and Mike's tiny circleâespecially with a bestie like thatâmade him a risky pick.Â
While Matthew kept searching for a tutor, Adam didn't sit idle. He had his security team channel their inner good Samaritans, keeping tabs on Mike's Heisenberg-wannabe friend. If anything fishy popped up, they'd drop an anonymous tip to the copsâjustice from above, keeping the air sweet and clean. đŹïžÂ
Perfume's toxic anyway. Sweet air? Even worse.Â
No doubt it's some local "specialty" polluting things. You can't erase it, but you've gotta keep it in checkâor everyone's choking on the saccharine vibes!Â
Adam wasn't planning to have Mike tutor Jill, but he didn't mind keeping him as a backup. The guy was a genius with decent character. This TV-drama world could use talent like that.Â
So, Adam quietly helped outâsweeping away the dead weight holding Mike back, setting him up for a better future. Call it his good deed of the day. đÂ
