Medical Center.

Liz showed up, and the hospital buzzed with energy.

Meredith, Dr. Bailey, and the others all stopped by to see her. Back in the day, Liz had a rough time here—aside from George, she didn't have a single close friend. Then came that scandal, and she was quietly pushed out.

But human nature's funny like that: what's far away smells sweet, what's close stinks. Now that Liz was back, no longer part of this world and in a vulnerable state, people's kindness toward her shot up. Even the surgical chief swung by to check on her and offer a few words of comfort.

Not Adam, though.

He saw right through her. Liz wasn't acting like herself—her "illness" was probably just a pity play. Why else would she have George call her ex, Danny, but tell him not to bother Adam?

Her symptoms were vague, the kind you could make up on the spot—hallucinations, hard to pin down or verify. And what did she claim to see? A heart, symbolizing all the love she'd poured into Danny. Add in the hospital setting, and it was like she was nudging him: Don't forget what we had.

It was straight out of some palace intrigue drama Adam remembered from his past life—a classic sob-story tactic.

And just as he'd suspected, it played out exactly like that.

By nightfall, the hospital was echoing with a scornful refrain:

"Ugh, men!"

"Ugh, men!"

"Ugh, men!"

"I can't believe Danny turned out to be that kind of guy…" Meredith said, shaking her head in disbelief.

"That jerk!" George fumed. "And Liz forgave him!"

"Women—no, everyone—end up having to rely on themselves," Christina said with a mocking edge. "Giving up your career and dreams for someone else? Always the dumbest move."

"Who's to blame? It was her choice," Adam said, strolling over with a grin. "O'Malley, where's the test report?"

"It's in the room. Everything came back normal," George replied offhandedly, too caught up in his rant to fetch it. "She's faking it to win back that sleazy playboy. Fairy tales are such a lie!"

"She's gone?" Adam asked, glancing at him.

"That jerk's catching up with Dr. Burke and the others," George said. "Liz is waiting for him."

"Chill out," Adam said with a laugh. "What you're seeing is just him playing the frail, heartfelt card now that he's lost his healthy heart.

But this is the real Danny. Think about it: a rich guy who, even in a weakened state, could charm a gorgeous doctor—does that scream 'pure and innocent' to you? Now that he's got a new heart and can live it up again, you think he'll stick with just Liz?

Honestly, I'm shocked he even showed up today to take her home. Probably a one-time thing. Next time she tries this stunt, she'll be crying into the void—he won't bother showing up."

"Poor Liz," George sighed, ever the loyal "bestie."

"Adam, where you headed?" Meredith asked as he started walking off.

"To the room," Adam said, half-joking, half-exasperated. "I still haven't seen the report. O'Malley's too busy moping over his gal pal to bring it to me. Guess I'll grab it myself. We can't just take an intern's word that 'everything's fine' and call it a day, right?"

"We're coming too," Meredith said, hurrying after him.

In the Room.

"Adam, I'm sorry…" Liz said, avoiding his gaze. "I told George not to bother you…"

"No big deal," Adam replied casually, picking up the report and skimming it. "Hospital's open for business—money's money, whoever's paying!"

A CT scan's a grand. An MRI's even more. Medicine's a goldmine. It wasn't like it cost him much time anyway—just a little drama to spice up the day.

"Dr. Duncan!" Danny swaggered in, all charm and bravado, arms open for a big hug.

Adam yanked an irate George in front of him as a shield.

"Ahem." Danny faltered, awkwardly dropping his arms and standing there.

"Let's go," Liz said quickly, tugging Danny toward the door. She was scared of Adam chewing her out and didn't want Danny embarrassed. Her mission here was done—back in the place where they'd fallen for each other, Danny had owned up to his mistakes, apologized, and promised to change. She was ready to trust him again.

"Hold up!" Adam called out as they reached the doorway.

"What's up?" Danny turned back with a playful grin. "Don't tell me Liz actually has something wrong with her. She's fine—I'd bet my life on it!"

"Stop it!" Liz giggled, swatting him lightly.

Her eyes darted to Meredith and Christina, practically screaming: That's right, I'm wild, I'm awesome, and my life's pretty damn great overall!

"Danny, you're not a doctor," Adam said, shaking his head. "You don't get to say if she's healthy. I do."

Danny's smile froze. That sounded… off.

"Adam, she's not actually sick, is she?" George asked, suddenly anxious.

"What do you think?" Adam smacked the report against George's head, deadpan. "That's what you're supposed to tell me."

The room went tense. Adam wasn't messing around.

They'd all seen the report—nothing had jumped out as abnormal.

"MRI, CT, X-rays, CBC—all normal," George said, studying it closely. "Labs show elevated lactate dehydrogenase and a slightly high sedimentation rate… but still within normal range."

"Are we looking at the same file?" Adam pulled out the MRI scan and gave it a shake. "Take another look. Nothing off at all?"

Everyone crowded around, turning it into a game of spot-the-difference.

"Here!" Christina, with Adam's hint, quickly zeroed in on a tiny, almost invisible anomaly in the right lobe of the brain.

"That's it?" Meredith asked skeptically.

"What is it?" Danny demanded, holding a now-pale Liz tightly.

"We don't know yet," Adam said, shaking his head. "Needs more tests."

"Give us your guess," Liz said, her smile gone.

Unlike Danny, she knew Adam's skill all too well—and that made her terrified.

"I really don't know," Adam said. "I suspect it's a tumor, but what kind? Malignant or benign? Primary or metastatic? Without a biopsy and more detailed scans, I can't say for sure.

What I do know, Liz, is that you're really sick!"

"Oh my God!" Danny clapped a hand over his mouth.

Liz's eyes welled up, a sinking dread crashing over her.
