Succubi Chapter 134. Very Specific
And just like that, I was officially in the dumbest situation of my life.
Inside a transparent battle dome conjured by my perverted mentor's overdesigned wand, surrounded by floating mana runes, alone, holding absolutely no grudge against this guy… yet somehow seconds away from fighting like my GPA depended on it. Which, knowing him, it probably did.
The air inside the dome was charged. I could feel it humming against my skin like static clinging to my clothes. My fingers twitched, shadow mana crackling softly in my palms.
I didn't want to fight him. I liked being alive.
But Callahan wasn't going to drop this.
He wasn't mad, he was curious. Which, let's be honest, was worse.
"Okay," I muttered, mostly to myself. "Just don't die. Don't die, don't die…"
He shifted his weight onto his back leg.
"Ready?" he said.
"No."
"Good." He pointed.
A whip of pale blue mana shot out, crackling through the air like a lightning leash.
I ducked, pivoted, then triggered Shadow Step.
Reality twisted for a blink. The world warped in grayscale. I reappeared behind him, already twisting into a roundhouse kick just because I was panicking and thought, why not?
He barely shifted, then disappeared.
Not teleported. Disappeared.
I felt it before I saw it, like hitting a wall made of gravity. My kick froze mid-air. The velocity of my movement stalled. It was like someone paused the animation file on my leg and laughed.
And then…
Callahan reappeared beside me, smirking. "Try harder, Evan."
He flicked. A dozen threads of silver mana lashed out like spider silk, aiming straight for my torso.
"Cradlestorm… Light Bind."
I grunted and countered with Devil Armor.
The plates formed instantly. Glowing red-black infernal plates surged over my chest, shoulder, hip, and shin.
-Clink. Clink. Clink.
His threads slammed into the plates and hissed. Two bounced. Three wrapped tight and started compressing. Not damage spells… interruption magic.
Cradlestorm wasn't about damage. It was about humiliation through sheer technical control. I was fighting the school's thirstiest duelist professor, who had built an entire signature spell around ruining other people's spellcasting and self-esteem.
"Tell me how you cast it," he said as he stepped forward again. "The Barrier. Who taught you?"
I grit my teeth. "I didn't lie. It really just popped up."
"Skills don't just pop up, Evan. You're not a gacha game."
"I mean, I didn't roll for it either!"
Callahan fired another shot. This one looked like a spear of light, but right before it hit, it splintered into five, then curved back around like heat-seeking darts.
"Illusory Shatter…"
I jumped, tucked, and rolled, barely missing one that zipped past my face like a buzzing mosquito with a vendetta.
"Stop dodging!" he shouted.
"Stop attacking!"
"You're faster than expected," he muttered. "But your level is way below mine. This isn't a real match."
"THEN WHY ARE YOU FIGHTING ME?!"
"Because this is the only way you'll talk!"
UGH! This was less of a battle and more of an overly dramatic teacher parent conference where the parent decided to throw fireballs instead of emails.
I raised both hands and shouted, "Dark Orbs!"
The dome went dark for a second.
Fifty swirling black spheres formed around us in a triangle pattern, pulsing like mini singularities.
The orbs detonated one by one, letting out gravity pulses that slammed into the floor, tugging the air inward with little shrieks.
The tiles beneath Callahan cracked. His balance shifted. I saw his foot buckle.
I lunged.
[Shadow Blade – Dagger Variant]
I went for a feint.
He grinned and twisted his body low. "Predictable."
He vanished, then reappeared behind me mid-squat like some cursed ninja librarian.
He didn't attack, though.
Instead, he patted my head.
I spun, humiliated. "Did you just—?"
"You still haven't answered me," he said, dodging again. "How'd you cast that barrier?"
I panted. Mana buzzing under my skin. My arms hurt. My stomach still ached from that banshee kick earlier. I didn't want to lie, but I had nothing to give.
So I said the only thing that made sense.
"I don't know! I swear!"
He blinked.
I saw it. That flicker of surprise. That moment of… wait, what?
"I didn't mean to cast it," I continued. "It just happened. My mana flared, and then BAM! Barrier. I didn't chant, I didn't even think. It was like my body just… knew."
Callahan squinted.
"That's even worse," he muttered.
"What? Why?!"
He sighed and rubbed his temple. "Because that means either your bloodline is weird as hell, or you've got a passive skill no one flagged. Or… worst case… you're not even registered as what you actually are."
I held in a scream.
Don't say it.
Don't say demon.
Don't say succubus.
Don't say prince infernal offspring.
Don't say I live with multiple women who have horns and tail.
He pointed at me again. "I need to check your soul trace."
"No! I mean… I'm fine! I'm normal!"
"Normal people don't auto cast barriers when they panic, Evan!"
"I don't know what you want me to say!"
He took a step forward. "Say you're secretly a royal blooded fiend spawn born under a hell star with suppressed class evolution triggers!"
I blinked, face frozen. "That's… very specific," I cringed.
Callahan shrugged, looking weirdly proud. "I've been reading a lot of action fantasy stories lately."
I groaned and lowered my weapon. "Can we not do this right now?"
He eased up slightly, wand still glowing. "Fine. But I want a scan. Full trace. No illusions."
"I swear I'm human… ish."
His eye twitched. "ISH?!"
"Ughh…" I pointed behind him. "The buns are getting cold!"
He turned. The bench. My glorious pile of bakery. Suffering. The buns had sat too long. The soda was starting to sweat condensation all over the bag. A minor tragedy.
He winced. "Damn. Food's sacred."
"Exactly!" I said. "Let's not commit crimes against carbs."
He muttered, "This conversation's not over…"
And I muttered, "Oh, c'mon..."
