Chapter 1 - The Genius of the Underground

Author's Note:

I once heard the phrase, "Write and rewrite," in a cartoon. These words have haunted me for over a decade.

My first attempt at writing this story using the Vampire Archetype was cute, but I've realized I can do more and have even more fun.

So I decided to rewrite the story from scratch, using the mad scientist/sorcerer archetype.

Furthermore, I decided to remove the "realism" in the form of the protagonist's doubts and insecurities, giving him more courage and determination.

Acknowledgements: Before I begin, I want to thank DesertChocolate for inspiring me with his work. You're a great fanfic writer, one of the best in my humble opinion.

I almost forgot, Writer with bad Grammar TT with his story, Nier: Automata Stranded Shard, also deserves great recognition.

Chapter 1: The Genius of the Underground

Plot: Far from the eyes of the inhabitants of Gotham City, whether ordinary civilians, heroes or villains, an individual who can be considered the reincarnation on steroids of Leonardo da Vinci is making final preparations for his entrance to the general public.

POV Narrator

Gotham City, or simply Gotham, is an American city rife with corruption and crime, the home of its iconic protector Batman.

In this city, crime and corruption reached such a high level that Gotham City became eternally characterized in popular culture as a dark and disturbing metropolis.

If a reporter were to randomly ask passersby in any corner of North America what the most dangerous city to live in is, ninety-five out of a hundred would say Gotham City, the rest would say Metropolis.

This is how dark Gotham City's reputation is in the world, and unfortunately, there are many good reasons for its infamy.

The local superhero is a man dressed as a bat, who on bad days throws people off the roofs of buildings and beats them so badly that they end up in the hospital for months.

The city's most dangerous supervillain is a clown with an endless obsession with his nemesis and a desire to watch the world burn.

Among the good people trying to save Gotham City or at least keep it from getting any worse, four individuals stand out: Batman, Nightwing, Robin, and Batgirl.

These four unconventional people are the main cause that has kept the city from falling into complete ruin for several years.

Just four superheroes against a dark metropolis filled with crime and decadence, some would say they are too few to win such a challenge.

Anyone who has been wishing for Gotham City to receive reinforcements is about to see this little aspiration come true.

Because from today, for better or worse, another unconventional individual is preparing to join the game of masked heroes and villains.

XXX

The sun has risen in the sky, Gotham City and its inhabitants have managed to survive another night.

With the coming of light, the heroes of Gotham City are forced to take off their masks and return to their civilian clothes.

Bruce Wayne is on his way to work at Wayne Enterprises in his limousine, on the way home his butler drops Tim Drake off at school; Barbara Gordon arrives at the university just in time; Dick Grayson returns to Blüdhaven on his motorcycle.

Meanwhile, as these heroes take a break from their heroic duties and return to being as normal people as possible, deep in the city's underworld, a certain individual is working on his own plans.

XXX

In an old, abandoned subway tunnel that hasn't been used for over a century, a person is walking calmly down the middle of the tracks.

This person is definitely not normal; no sane person would find themselves in such a dark, cold, damp place, filled with such a chilling silence.

Only a desperate man trying to hide from something or a brave ghost hunter would find himself in such a place.

Despite the pitch darkness and the small obstacles on the path, this individual moves as if the place were illuminated by the sun and with a certain grace of movement that allows him to walk without stumbling.

The person with a kind of night vision is 160 centimeters tall, with a slim frame, thin bones, narrow shoulders and hips, long arms and legs.

He wears worn clothing that hides any trace of his skin or any distinguishing physical features.

Black winter boots with the soles dirty with half-melted snow, chunky gray pants with dirt stains on the knees, a black sweatshirt, black wool gloves. Finally, an old, oversized winter coat with a furry hood.

The only piece of color she wears is a red scarf, wrapped so as to hide the lower half of her face.

This individual is on the opposite side of Batman in terms of intimidating build and clothing style.

Likewise, you can tell by the way he dresses that he doesn't like the cold or that he tries to let no one see his face.

The clothing probably helps keep people away; dressed like this, someone more affluent might mistake him for a homeless person or a bad guy.

"Leonardo, don't stop to rest, keep moving your hands, you'll be home soon." The man mutters to himself, revealing his name and a European accent, probably Italian.

The hooded individual continues walking along the old railway line, maintaining the same pace.

Although his voice indicates that he is tired, his mind is alert and his movements are not lethargic, despite having spent much of the night and morning out on the streets of Gotham City.

Continuing to walk in a straight line without stopping, Leonardo takes the trouble to move his gaze towards the walls, the floor and the ceiling of the subway tunnel.

Leonardo's eyes are not looking for signs of structural collapse, although the fear of the ceiling or floor giving way would not be unlikely.

No, Leonardo is observing his works to prevent intruders from approaching his home.

Runic symbols are written in chalk on the walls, and numerous occult, glyph-like symbols are found on the floor.

If you look carefully, every ten meters on the railway track positioned on the ends of the sleepers, there are small statues of animals covered in a thin layer of colored powder.

These crude art projects are large enough to fit in the palm of a person's hand and easy to hide.

In addition to the defense systems of clearly occult origin, there are more "naturist" protections.

Scattered across the floor are large mushrooms of every color imaginable, and on the ceiling is a slowly spreading kind of toxic moss.

"My security system is too crude and primitive, so there's room for improvement." Leonardo thinks, visualizing in his mind a multitude of projects that could transform this abandoned subway tunnel into a veritable Labyrinth of Daedalus.

This is no mere exaggeration, Leonardo, since arriving in Gotham City, has begun to make developments with one of his abilities, [Territory Creation].

This ability allows Leonardo to create a specialized territory that gives him an advantage.

In simple terms, Territory Creation can be used for the accelerated creation of a Workshop or the alteration of the surrounding environment into an environment extremely favorable to its user.

Leonardo chose to prioritize the development of his Workshop/House, rather than focusing his efforts on creating a Dungeon.

"As always, time and resources are my biggest obstacles." Leonardo mutters with some disappointment, knowing what wonders he can achieve, but unfortunately there are several factors limiting him.

"With the resources I have left from my priority projects, I could replace the simple plaster with special paint that better conducts magical energy and install anti-personnel mines charged with Dust in certain spots," Leonardo mutters, opting for minor improvements, more within his "budget."

Leonardo continued to walk in the pitch darkness of the tunnel, but wherever his eyes wandered, his mind projected improvements, which could then be adapted by common sense according to the needs and resources currently available.

Perhaps it was due to fatigue, but Leonardo's mind continued to wander, even as he tried to stay focused. So Leonardo decided to continue talking to himself, so his mind would be occupied and less likely to wander.

"There are so many things to do, more layers of protection to add, but so far everything is working," Leonardo murmurs, looking down at his feet and the old railway track.

"No person, not even a nasty sewer rat or even a cockroach, is allowed to approach this tunnel," said Leonardo, reflecting on what he had achieved so far with his work: a safe hiding place, away from prying eyes and ears.

Leonardo has two ideas about what a base should be like:

- First, the base must be a stronghold so well fortified that only an army can hope to conquer it.

- Second, the base must be hidden from everyone and everything; no one can harm you unless they know where you are.

Continuing his walk, Leonardo reached a crossroads between several railway tracks. In front of the three streets are some of the most classic and explosive defenses that Leonardo had erected underground.

In front of each entrance are a set of four metal barrels, filled with colored stones, with an addition of wires and computer components.

"I don't know if I'm crazy or paranoid, but all my uninvited guests halfway through will be incinerated, electrocuted, frozen, thrown, and crushed," Leonardo mutters, only he knows how much damage these explosive barrels can do if they are activated.

Leonardo turned left and passed by four explosive barrels colored red, white, black and yellow.

That color combination has a meaning that only he can understand in this whole crazy world.

As we continued walking through the second half of the tunnel, the darkness began to disappear due to a strange fluorescent moss, which grows on the sides of the walls as an alternative to flashlights.

"I've finally reached my destination," Leonardo declares tiredly, having reached the end of the tunnel.

Suddenly, an intimidating, alien-looking creature fell from the ceiling, landing in front of Leonardo.

The name of this beast is Buglizard.

Buglizard has a white, black, and red color scheme. She has a black head which dons a white patch on each side of her head. Located on these, she has four red eyes, two on one side, and two on the other.

Buglizard has sharp teeth and the gums protrude in her lower jaw. She has a row of red spikes running down her back, which also has a black stripe. Buglizard has four legs and black feet, each ending in three red claws, and a tail with a red-marked tip.

A creature that seems to have come from a nightmare and lives underground is often a bad sign. But this case is an exception.

Instead of acting like a monster, Buglizard starts rubbing himself against Leonardo's legs as if he were a huge cat.

"You are such a well-mannered Chimera, I was right to take alchemy seriously," Leonardo said in a cheerful voice, stroking his "guard dog" on the head.

Leonardo pulled a foil-wrapped burrito from his winter coat. "Here's a little reward for your hard work," Leonardo said, tossing the food to his pet monster.

Buglizard devoured the burrito in one bite, ignoring the foil packaging.

"It's Sesame time, open sesame." Leonardo said, with a light humorous tone, imitating the French accent.

The owner of Buglizard approaches the brick wall at the end of the subway tunnel.

At first glance, the wall is a simple wall covered with various cracks, scratches, and dried and discolored paint.

For a normal person this wall is just a wall, but for a person with some experience in the arcane one can say that this wall is more similar to the Armored Vault of a state bank.

Leonardo removes his black woolen gloves, revealing pale, light-skinned hands, in keeping with the Renaissance aesthetic of the famous painting, Mona Lisa.

For a currently unknown reason, all ten fingers have black and blue rings.

"As you've done hundreds of times, concentrate, clear your mind, and imagine the pieces of the puzzle falling into place." Leonardo murmurs in a serious voice, looking at his hands.

Leonardo is a practitioner of [Magecraft], the re-enactment of Mysteries/Miracles, using magical energy as a shortcut to achieve what science could accomplish, bypassing typical constraints through supernatural means.

To activate his Magic Circuits and use the spell to open the entrance door to his Workshop/House, he must use a mental trigger.

In Leonardo's mind, the image of four puzzle pieces appears that join together to form the image of a triangle with a tower in the center and a crown above it.

Neon blue symbols resembling computer circuits appeared on Leonardo's hands. The magic circuits were activated perfectly.

Once with the ignition, Leonardo's senses gained a sensation of slight pain and numbness.

But Leonardo doesn't worry; he's used to it; Magecraft isn't something without costs.

"The magic circuits and the color they produce are beautiful, every pain and sleepless night is worth it," Leonardo murmurs, a small smile on his face, like an artist admiring his own work.

Stopping wasting time, Leonardo begins to move the fingers of his right hand according to a precise pattern and rhythm that he has practiced at least a hundred times in the last few months.

Leonardo's movements created thin, luminous lines that stopped in mid-air. These lines joined together to create a simple sequence of magical runes.

The wall in front of Leonardo opened slowly, as if it were the door of an elevator.

The sequence of Runes used by Leonardo is less a traditional spell and more the equivalent of inserting a key into a lock and opening a door.

When the hidden entrance has opened fully, revealing a long, narrow corridor, just wide enough for two people or a Magus and his Chimera to walk through.

The corridor is exactly 100 meters long, all its surfaces are made of smoothly cut stone.

This entrance is not empty; each floor slab is embedded with crystals, each precious gem surrounded by a glyph made of runes, carved directly into the stone.

At the end of the corridor is a reinforced door—well, actually, a refrigerator door—reinforced with four bumpers, a high-tech electronic lock, and numerous runes engraved into the metal.

"My last desperate line of defense, a hundred-meter minefield with a gravity trick, followed by a crudely reinforced door." Leonardo thinks as he walks down the corridor, his pace slower and more careful than before.

To be safe, Leonardo avoids accidentally stepping on one of the gravitational-capable Dust crystals.

Even Buglizard avoid touching crystals, having learned firsthand that crystals are dangerous objects.

Once he reaches the door that separates him from a comfortable sofa and a well-fortified refrigerator, Leonardo enters a security code: 2621.

The meaning of this number can only be understood if you know Chaldean Numerology.

{Author's Note: This information is true, who can guess what is written?]

Once the door opened, the corridor entrance automatically closed, erasing any trace of this secret passage.

This trick of not opening both doors simultaneously is a security measure and a way to gain time in case of emergency.

"Covo, sweet covo." Leonardo declares, as if he were a man who has been working abroad for months and finally comes home.

Even Buglizard wags his tail in glee, obviously being a "guard dog" is not a very fun job.

Magus and Chimera have entered their secret underground House/Workshop.

XXX

Every great hero needs a place to take off their mask, recharge their gadgets, or simply ponder their next plan to save the world.

Batman has the Batcave.

Superman has the Fortress of Solitude.

Flash has the STAR Labs in Central City.

Leonardo has the Atelier, even if his secret lair is still in its infancy.

The Atelier is a base created with a rather simple architecture in mind, a multi-level structure, currently featuring five floors.

Someone with more hunger than imagination might compare the Atelier to a multi-layered sandwich.

However, in reality, the shape of the Atelier resembles a stepped pyramid, with each level slightly larger than the previous one.

Currently, Leonardo and Buglizard are on the first floor of the Atelier, considered the "living area".

At first glance, this room might seem like a strange combination of a video game nerd's living room, a computer lab, and an amateur detective's office.

The space is illuminated by twelve crystal bulbs mounted on the ceiling. In addition to the lights, the ceiling is also adorned with high-tech rectangular metal boxes.

The entire floor is obviously made of stone, after all, every inch of the Atelier was "dug" through the rock via Leonardo's [Magecraft] and [Territory Creation].

To provide comfort and better thermal insulation, the stone floor was covered with a myriad of rugs of every imaginable shape and color.

If there was a Frankenstein's monster in the world of carpets, then it would be here.

On the left, as you enter the Atelier, is the living area, consisting of a refrigerator, a sofa that extends to become a bed, a bookcase full of video game consoles and cases, three high-definition televisions, and a bed for large dogs.

Adjacent to the living area is the "computer lab," consisting of four tables attached to form an L, positioned in the corner.

The tables are half filled with computers, servers, and keyboards, the other half filled with gadgets in various stages of construction.

On the walls there is a wall-mounted tool holder panel, packed with tools for every type of maintenance or job.

Not far from the tables full of computers is what appears to be an operating table/dental chair, covered with a white cloth and flanked by a trolley.

On the right, as you enter the Atelier, there is what looks like the office of the protagonist of a detective TV series, who is at the beginning of his career.

A wooden desk filled with notebooks, clipboards, and paper, a swivel chair, and several sliding whiteboards.

The blackboards are filled with maps and photographs of Gotham City, clipped newspaper articles, notepads, and identified photos.

Finally, on the other side of the room, right in front of the entrance door, you can see a lifting platform that serves to move between the five floors of the Atelier.

Buglizard, as if he were not a nightmare monster created in a laboratory to eat intruders, hurried to make himself comfortable on the bed.

"Lucky you, Chimera, who have only two things to do: keep watch while I'm out and keep me company when I'm in." Leonardo said, walking without worrying about soiling the carpets with the dirt under his boots.

Leonardo's actions must have triggered something, because a compartment in one wall opened, revealing what appears to be some sort of black, white, and orange quadruped robot, vaguely reminiscent of an otter.

Leonardo didn't pay attention to this little robotic masterpiece; after all, he created it and knows what it will do.

The otter-like robot, aka Robotter-003, has started cleaning up dirt footprints on the floor

Leonardo's mind wanders to the sofa and take a nap, but he has a lot to do before he can rest.

"At least I can finally take off this disguise and put on something lighter." Leonardo mutters, making a movement with his right hand, as if pressing/pulling an appliqué.

This movement caused a semi-transparent holographic screen to appear in front of him, as if Leonardo

had just become a video game character.

Of course, Leonardo doesn't have a power like Han Ji-han's The Gamer or Sung Jin-woo's System, it's not that kind of story.

The Buglizard Master has the power, [Inventory], which can be described as a simple inventory system.

The screen that appeared before Leonardo has two sections: Equipment and Storage.

Equipment shows a basic model of Leonardo, along with any items he wears or carries on his person.

Deposito is the inventory repository; it is, in effect, infinite. A pocket-sized dimension where Leonardo puts things that are precious, useful, or too heavy to carry around in the traditional way.

Leonardo pressed a couple of buttons on the interface, on the equipment section. The effect was instantaneous; the winter clothing was replaced with indoor clothing.

Now, the Master of Buglizard wears slippers, blue pants and a red shirt with short sleeves.

This change revealed Leonardo's appearance and some traits that made a disguise mandatory for him to go out.

Starting with the more normal things, Leonardo is a Bishōnen, that is, an extremely attractive boy with elegant and effeminate features.

Leonardo bears a strong resemblance to Mona Lisa, with long brown hair tied in a ponytail and large blue eyes.

The most iconic features are the horns, which have a structure similar to bird wings, long, pointed ears, and a thin, discreet tail, consistent with its refined aesthetic.

The Bishōnen is basically a blend of the Heroic Spirit Leonardo da Vinci and a Pure-blood Sarkaz of the Banshee race.

"My powers and what I can do with them are the main positive factor in my new life," Leonardo said with a bittersweet smile, interacting with the storage section of the inventory.

The video game-like screen appeared again in front of Leonardo. He is used to this comfortable mechanism, so he calmly presses the buttons on this video game screen, opening the food section of his inventory.

In Leonardo's left hand appears a thermos full of hot chocolate, one of his favorite drinks.

The inventory screen closes without Leonardo having to do anything other than wish it away.

Leonardo sat down in front of one of the computers in his small computer lab, while the screen lights up, he pours himself a cup of hot chocolate from the thermos.

The first thing the mastermind did was access the dark web, using the pseudonym Aiden Pearce. Once online, he logged into a ghost account with around $30,000.

"My viruses are doing a good job. Taking small sums of money from multiple people is easier than stealing a huge amount from a single individual," Leonardo mutters, playing the computer keyboard as if it were a piano.

"Aiden Pearce just purchased three storage warehouses in Metropolis, Gotham City, and Boston. Once everything's settled, I'll be able to place orders for the materials and know where to store them." Leonardo said, planning several moves.

Leonardo often spends the next quarter of an hour checking how his viruses are operating, ensuring that their victims enter the intended target—people with established funding, who won't mind losing a few dollars.

Finishing with the dark web and the nickname Aiden Pearce, Leonardo took a sip of his hot chocolate, then turned on a kind of extremely complex financial program, full of graphs, numbers and forecasts.

"I need to work on building a supercomputer and an AI capable of working completely on its own in the financial market," Leonardo mutters, logging into an account under the name Robert House.

The Bishōnen months ago decided to create two digital alter egos, Aiden Pearce for shady matters and Robert House for legitimate business.

The genius months ago, when he got a computer and an encrypted internet connection, decided to create two digital alter egos, Aiden Pearce for shady things and Robert House for legitimate business.

For half an hour, Leonardo went through various investment transactions, as if he were a financial broker executing transactions.

"Even with the computer programs of a cyberpunk world and the intellect of Leonardo da Vinci, earning honest money through investments is a slow process, with a lot of headaches," Leonardo mutters, taking a break for another cup of hot chocolate.

"At least with the latest sales I have enough money to start buying shares in a major company. Should I buy shares in WayneTech or LexCorp, maybe 1% of both companies?" Leonardo mutters, touching his temple, tired of this work, unfortunately necessary for his long-term plans.

Leonardo decided to leave the stock purchase until tomorrow evening, needing to better understand what WayneTech and LexCorp had to offer.

"Just one more thing and I can stop staring at this screen full of nonsense numbers." Leonardo mutters, seeming to despise the mathematics of the financial world.

This time, the blue-eyed genius didn't log into the dark web or a business bank account, he simply opened an email under the name Walter Schnee, an email full of... rejection messages.

"■■■!" Leonardo shouts angrily, getting up from his chair, almost hitting the computer screen.

"I can build a secret underground base! I can steal equipment and supplies from various shops without leaving any clues! I can hack into a Mexican gang's bank account! I can get results in the crazy world of finance! But I can't find a publishing house to publish my light novel based on the RWBY storyline!" Leonardo exclaims, slamming his hand against the computer's shutdown button.

"What a crazy world I've ended up in!" Leonardo shouts, raising his head and arms toward the ceiling.

"Without knowing how or why, I was transformed into an Alter Ego Class Servant, dropped from the sky straight into a garbage dump in a gangland city, in a crazy world of superheroes!" Leonardo shouts, as sparks of black lightning emit from his horns and fingers.

The Chimera decided to hide behind the sofa, knowing that when his master gets angry it's best not to be seen.

"I'm training to become a superhero! I'm taking the first steps towards becoming a rich industrialist like Tony Stark to contribute to the progress of human society! But I can't fulfill my dream of becoming a writer!" Leonardo shouts, slamming his foot against the floor, causing all the furniture on this floor of the Atelier to shake.

"If you want something done right, do it yourself!" Leonardo mutters, lowering his hands and clenching his fists, black sparks still emitting from his hands.

"Enough sitting on the bench, it's time to get out!" Leonardo declares, invoking in his right hand a sapphire-colored sphere, decorated with golden lines.

This is the [Nexus Arcanum], a powerful focus for Leon's magical abilities, allowing him to use his abilities without worrying about harming himself or those around him.

The black sparks stopped manifesting due to Leonardo's emotions, instead appearing through the lines of the Nexus Arcanum.

The blue-eyed genius steps onto the lifting platform, his grip on the focus tightening.

"Buglizard, you're coming with me! Let's go get some stuff from the armory." Leonardo said, wanting to take with him some of his latest offensive creations and a certain amount of incendiary crystals.

The Chimera had no choice but to emerge from its hiding place and climb onto the lift platform, alongside its Magus.

"I heard that Penguin is throwing a party tonight at the Iceberg Lounge to celebrate a business milestone. We're going to go to that party and get Penguin's gifts for ourselves." Leonardo said, pressing the button to reach the third level of the Atelier.

"Once I've emptied Penguin's vault, I'll build my own library and print my own light novel. For my science, for my magic, for my art, nothing and no one will stop me!" Leonardo said, running a hand through his hair, a certain madness oozing from his pores.

As of tonight, penguins in Gotham City are at risk of extinction.

Continues ...

XXX

Author's Note:

I hope you enjoyed this rewrite. As I said at the beginning, I decided to make Leonardo much more confident and focused on what he wants to achieve. However, when something or someone steps on his toe/tail, he tends to react explosively.
