"Lady Witch, what happened to my mother? Can you cure her?" Thor asked anxiously. The chaos in the prison had finally been quelled, and upon hearing the news of Queen Frigga's injury, the prince had rushed over immediately.
"Whatever you need, as long as I can get it," Odin added, staring intently at Luna. Compared to the wife he had spent thousands of years with, the ancient relics in his vault were no different from trash.
"Although I am happy to hear that, it is a pity that I have already tried my best," Luna replied without raising her head, a trace of deep fatigue lacing her voice.
Queen Frigga rested her head quietly on Luna's lap. Silver-blue divine power continuously poured from Luna's hands into Frigga's body, washing against the dark, black-red energy pulsing violently within her veins.
"Odin, you should know what the Cursed Warriors of the Dark Elves are capable of," Luna continued. "It is a power obtained through blood magic, sacrificing their own flesh and soul. The moment that cursed dagger pierced the Queen's body, her vitality was already wiped out."
"You mean my mother is dead?" Thor gritted his teeth, unwilling to accept it. Suddenly, a desperate idea struck him. He gripped Mjolnir tightly, turning toward the door. "Then her soul has entered the realm of the dead. I will go to Helheim right now and snatch my mother's soul back from Mephisto!"
Luna's eyes widened slightly. "Odin, do you not focus on basic education in Asgard?"
She sighed, shaking her head. "Do you think the underworld and hell truly control life and death? The only entities capable of reversing life and death are the Supreme Beings who control those very laws. The underworld and hell are merely realms suited for the dead to inhabit. It is not because they are the kingdoms of the dead that they gather souls, but rather because souls naturally gravitate there, making them the kingdoms of the dead."
Luna paused, giving Thor a pointed look. "Besides, the ruler of the underworld isn't Mephisto, but your—"
"Ahem!" Odin interrupted loudly with two sharp coughs. The Goddess of Death who ruled Helheim was a taboo subject the All-Father never wished to mention.
Luna glanced at Odin, gracefully skipping the topic, and continued her explanation. "In truth, the current state of her soul cannot be entirely classified as death. Reshaping a physical body isn't an impossible feat once you reach a certain level of power. Not to mention, your mother's soul is still right here."
With a wave of her hand, a pale blue phantom emerged from Frigga's motionless body. The spectral projection looked incredibly fragile, flickering as if a mere breeze could scatter it. Traces of the black-red curse still clung to the edges of the ethereal form.
"I tried my best to delay the weakening of Frigga's soul, giving her enough time to accompany you through this final period," Luna said, standing up with a tired exhale.
"Thank you," Odin nodded heavily. He raised his spear, Gungnir, using its immense power to safely store Frigga's fragile soul. He understood Luna's unspoken words perfectly. Frigga's time was running out, and his own was not far behind. Fortunately, though his remaining time was short, there were still things he could accomplish.
"Heimdall, close the Bifrost and prohibit anyone from entering or leaving," Odin commanded, his voice hardening into the tone of a ruthless warlord. "Fandral, summon the other generals. We will deploy our forces to deal with these damned long-eared invaders."
Thor finally realized what his father intended. "Father, are you planning to fight the Dark Elves here in Asgard? I think our priority should be pursuing them."
"How do we pursue them?" Odin retorted sharply. "When the Dark Elves dive into the void of space, even Heimdall cannot see them. Besides, we don't need to chase them at all. Malekith wants the Aether, which means he will definitely return for it. We just need to wait and finish this once and for all."
"But even if we win here, it will be a tragic victory. Asgard will be devastated," Thor argued passionately. "I have a plan. Let me take the Aether away from Asgard with an elite strike force. We can draw Malekith out and execute a beheading strike against him."
"This plan is far too risky," Odin said, shaking his head.
"The risk of sitting here waiting to die is even greater!" Thor pushed back. "Asgard could be entirely destroyed. How many of our soldiers will have to sacrifice their lives?"
"As many as it takes!" Odin growled. Golden divine energy surged in his solitary eye, raw killing intent momentarily eclipsing the usual wisdom of the All-Father. "War means blood. Let those creatures hiding in the dark see who will bleed first."
"Father, please don't do this," Thor stared blankly at the king. "What is the difference between you and Malekith if you throw lives away like this?"
In Thor's eyes, Odin had always been a benevolent, majestic king. This ruthless, unyielding warlord was a side of his father he had never truly seen.
Hearing Thor's plea, Odin merely let out a cold, unmoved laugh. He turned his back on his son and strode out of the room.
"It seems we won't be heading back to Earth anytime soon," Ethan muttered to himself. He turned, fully intending to head back to his quarters to get some much-needed rest.
Before he could take a step, Thor suddenly reached out and grabbed his arm. "Don't go. Please."
Ethan paused, looking back at the desperate prince.
"I am not strong enough to do this alone," Thor pleaded. "If my father won't sanction this plan, then I can only rely on your help, my friend."
"Why would you assume we'd agree to this?" Luna interjected before Ethan could respond. "Your father is the king, and Asgard is acting on his direct orders."
"Because I will be the king of Asgard in the future," Thor replied firmly, holding Luna's gaze.
Luna turned her attention to Ethan. "What do you think, Ethan?" She fully expected him to refuse.
This wasn't a simple matter of helping a friend out of a bind. Strictly speaking, both she and Ethan were from Earth. Asgard was the reigning hegemon of the Nine Realms; if they suffered heavy losses in this war, the fallout could easily spill over and threaten Earth. It wasn't necessarily a good thing for them to get involved.
"Alright. I agree," Ethan replied readily, his tone calm and deliberate.
'Earth needs Asgard right now,' Ethan reasoned inwardly. He knew human civilization was currently in a critical transitional phase. While Earth would eventually expand into interstellar space, they still needed Asgard's umbrella of protection in the short term.
If Asgard declined rapidly after this war, the other civilizations of the Nine Realms would undoubtedly rebel and plunge the galaxy into chaos. Midgard, acting as the nexus connecting all the realms, would become a prime target. The resulting devastation would be catastrophic.
'Asgard will inevitably decline, and that day is fast approaching, but it cannot be today,' Ethan thought. 'They need to hold the title of overlord just a little longer. Once Earth's civilization matures, I will personally ensure humanity steps up to take over that mantle.'
"So, what is your next move?" Ethan asked, looking at Thor with a serious expression.
"I will have Sif sneak Jane out of her quarters, and then we will take her to Svartalfheim," Thor explained.
"Odin has completely locked down the Bifrost," Luna pointed out, clearly still annoyed that Ethan had dismissed her earlier caution. She made a mental note to kick him in the face later if his explanation didn't satisfy her. "How exactly do you plan to travel to the Dark Elf homeworld?"
"The Bifrost is the primary entrance, but it isn't the only passage off this world," Thor said, his expression growing complicated. "There is one person who knows all the hidden paths."
Thor's jaw tightened. Ever since that poisoned dagger had been plunged into his side, he had given up on that particular person. If he weren't entirely out of options, he would never willingly bring Jane anywhere near someone so dangerous.
When Thor descended into the dim dungeons of Asgard, he was greeted by rows of empty, idle cells. The recent riot had been violently suppressed, leaving the subterranean prison quieter and more desolate than ever before.
Only one cell remained occupied. As Thor approached the reinforced glass, Loki looked up, a disdainful smirk instantly spreading across his face.
"Thor. It's been so long. You've only just come to see me now?" Loki stepped forward, exuding energy and arrogance. He looked exactly like a man who had won the war. "I thought you had forgotten all about me."
Loki's voice grew louder, laced with a bitter, venting resentment. "Why did you come? To gloat? To mock me from the outside?"
It was a classic Loki performance. Every time they spoke, he would hide behind layers of sarcasm and taunts. But Thor wasn't fooled. He could tell at a glance that this radiant, perfectly groomed Loki was nothing more than an illusion. He wanted to speak to the real man beneath the trickery.
"Loki, that's enough," Thor said quietly. "Drop the illusion."
As Thor's words echoed in the cell, the immaculate image of the God of Mischief shimmered and vanished.
In his place sat the real Loki. He was slumped against the wall, his clothes disheveled, his hair greasy and tangled. He looked utterly defeated, like a man who had lost everything that mattered.
"Now you see the real me, brother," Loki whispered, his voice hollow. He met Thor's eyes and offered a bleak, broken smile.
In the past, no matter how dire the circumstances, Loki would have never allowed Thor to see him so thoroughly ruined. He always needed to be the arrogant, cunning trickster who was perpetually one step ahead.
But he couldn't hide it anymore. When the entire universe had called him a monster, Loki had stubbornly held his head high, insisting he was right. But this time was different. No one else knew that it was Loki who had mockingly pointed the Kurse monster toward the palace defenses—the very act that allowed the beast to reach Queen Frigga.
For the first time in his long life, the God of Lies felt the crushing weight of true regret. He hated his lies. He hated his pranks. Looking at his brother, his lips trembled uncontrollably.
'Brother... I am so sorry. I was wrong,' Loki thought desperately.
But when he finally opened his mouth, fear and grief twisted the words into something else entirely.
"Did she suffer?" Loki asked softly.
Thor, entirely unaware of Loki's indirect role in their mother's death, didn't grasp the deeper agony behind the question. "I didn't come here to mourn our mother with you," Thor stated bluntly. "I came to offer you a chance."
"Go ahead," Loki replied, his voice still trembling.
"I know you want revenge just as much as I do. If you help me escape Asgard, I will give you that chance," Thor said, holding Loki's gaze.
A strange, broken laugh escaped Loki's lips. It was a sound that mocked Thor's desperation while simultaneously radiating painful self-deprecation. "You must be truly desperate to come to me for help. Why would you ever trust a person like me?"
"I don't trust you," Thor replied, turning his face away to hide the pain in his own eyes. "But Mother trusted you."
Thor rested a hand over his side, the memory of Loki's betrayal still fresh. "You should know that in all our past battles, I always held onto a glimmer of hope for you. I always believed my brother was still in there. But after the last time... I gave up that hope. If you betray me again, I will kill you myself."
Hearing the cold finality in Thor's voice, Loki suddenly chuckled. After centuries together, he knew his brother perfectly. The coldness in Thor's eyes was genuine.
A brief pang of disappointment hit Loki, the realization that he had finally destroyed something irreplaceable. Yet, at the same time, a dark spark of excitement flared in his chest. Things had just become vastly more interesting.
"So," Loki smirked, pushing himself up from the floor. "When do we leave?"
Thor disabled the energy barrier, leading Loki swiftly through the prison corridors and slipping past the distracted guard patrols.
"Brother, this doesn't feel like you," Loki remarked as they breached the upper levels. For some reason, walking beside this cold, ruthlessly focused version of Thor made Loki feel strangely relaxed. He found himself falling back into their old cadence. "I fully expected your grand infiltration plan to involve dragging me through a pile of dead guards on our way out the front door."
"If you don't shut up, I will leave you here," Thor shot back, genuine impatience sharpening his tone.
Loki blinked, pleasantly surprised. His brutish, straightforward brother had actually developed a ruthless edge. Intrigued, Loki decided to push his luck and let himself loose.
A shimmer of illusion magic washed over them both. Suddenly, Thor was transformed into a grotesque, horse-faced alien, while Loki took the form of a hulking Minotaur.
"There we go, brother," Loki rumbled in a deep, bovine voice. "With this disguise, no one will ever recognize us."
Thor completely ignored him, keeping his eyes fixed on the path ahead. Taking his silence as an invitation, Loki ramped up the performance, practically dancing around Thor in a desperate bid for attention.
The magic shifted again. This time, Loki transformed himself into Captain America.
"Wow, this uniform feels incredible," Loki declared, puffing out his chest. "I can practically feel the righteous power of justice surging through my veins! What do you think, brother?"
He turned to look at Thor, who had been transformed into a bright orange Shiba Inu, barely two feet tall, wearing a tiny red cape and holding a miniature Mjolnir.
The Shiba Inu glared at him.
"Even in this form, I can still make you suffer," Thor growled, before realizing how ridiculous he sounded. "I am the God of Thunder! Woof!"
Thor snapped his mouth shut. Loki's magic was apparently affecting his vocal cords as well.
"Oh, you don't like this one?" Loki laughed. "Let's try something else."
A green flash illuminated the corridor. Thor found himself wearing a short frilly skirt, his blonde hair replaced by long pink pigtails. Loki, meanwhile, had turned into a small, floating mascot creature with blood-red eyes, oversized ears, and pink markings.
"Stupid brother!" the mascot squeaked. "You possess incredible magical potential! Come, make a contract with me and become a magical gi—urgh!"
Thor's patience finally snapped. Grabbing Loki by the throat, he slammed him hard against a marble pillar, pinning him in place as a pair of Einherjar guards passed in the distance.
"Alright, alright. I'll stop playing around," Loki wheezed, dropping the illusion entirely. "But if we are going to fight our way out of here, you need to give me a weapon. Even a small dagger will do."
Thor glanced down at him, an unreadable expression on his face. He reached behind his back.
Loki smiled. Deep down, he knew his older brother still cared about him.
But instead of drawing a blade, Thor pulled out a pair of heavy Asgardian manacles and swiftly locked them onto Loki's wrists.
"Just to be on the safe side," Thor smiled back, gesturing down the corridor.
Loki followed his gaze and saw Jane Foster approaching, having just been smuggled out by Sif.
"She is your insurance policy?" Loki asked, looking between Jane and Thor. A sudden, absurd wave of grievance washed over him. Thor hadn't cuffed him out of malice; he had done it to protect his mortal girlfriend from him.
Swallowing his pride, Loki decided he needed to smooth things over with the mortal if this plan was going to work. He summoned the most charming, sincere smile he could manage.
"Hello," he said smoothly. "I am Loki. You may have heard of—"
Smack!
Before Loki could finish his introduction, Jane stepped up and slapped him across the face with everything she had.
"That was for New York," she snapped.
Loki stood stunned, his cheek stinging. It was the first time in his life he had genuinely tried to be polite to a mortal, only to be violently rejected.
Before he could formulate a witty retort, Thor smoothly stepped between them, firmly shielding Jane from his brother with his own body.
Loki merely sighed.
