Chapter 119 - CH 119

Harry frowned, "Well, on one hand, there's the fact that it reflected the killing curse, and that the protection stayed with me. I know that much since, at the tender age of 11, I killed my first defense professor when he was possessed by the Dark Lord. My touch literally burned him. It was a protection that remained until he used my blood to resurrect himself."

Perenelle was listening intently and tracing her thumb along the handle of her mug. "Sounds like fairly strong protection to me."

Harry nodded, then his expression turned sceptical, "I also have been told that my mother's sacrifice could be tied into wards then created with her muggle sister's blood, protecting that home from attack for as long as I lived with them."

Perenelle frowned at that, but remained quiet, watching Harry closely.

"The wards were supposed to protect me from… well…. I was told Voldemort, but I have no idea if that was justVoldemort. Or if that included his followers as well, or if it was broad enough to effect any magicals that intended to harm me. I was always fuzzy on that. However, I amsure that the protection never actually protected me from general harm, considering the muggles I was forced to live with." Harry said blandly, his voice somewhat thoughtful. He was still bitter about his upbringing but there was nothing to do about it now.

Perenelle's eyes narrowed at the implications in Harry's statement, but let it pass because of his bland tone and the realization that there was nothing she could do about it either. Besides she was waiting to hear Harry's analysis of his own history.

They had talked early on and even Nicholas had realized, while Harry was willing to answer general questions, he didn't react well to pressing for more information, unless a good reason could be explained for it. He had been very reticent about the specifics of his own personal history.

Harry had paused to take a sip of his tea before continuing, "Further, the protection upon me, or my body directly was imperfect at best. It didn't seem to stop a piece of Voldemort's soul from latching on to me. It didn't protect me from a connection that rendered me nearly catatonic in pain every time Riddle threw a fucking temper tantrum or he came near me."

Perenelle scowled and tapped her fingers against her mug as she considered thoughtfully, "As someone who does have some experience with blood wards. I can tell you with some level of certainty, some of what you said doesn't make sense."

Harry looked unsurprised and took a sip of tea, listening with a curious expression on his face."I would actually love to hear your perspective on it."

Perenelle's expression was thoughtful, "I have never heard of a ward scheme to protect a residence that was powered by a sacrifice. Especially such a specific ward scheme as the one you describe. More importantly, I assume you know the vulnerability of intent based wards?" Harry nodded a little bit, sipping his tea "Of course, they have two weaknesses. If a person doesn't think they're doing anything wrong, or is truly convinced they have good intentions, the ward can completely miss them. Though that can be avoided by basing the intent wards on what the caster of the wards believes is best for whatever it's protecting."

That was especially true for the Slytherin dorms, Harry had based all of the wards on his beliefs about being protected where you sleep. Something that bothered him not at all.

Harry continued, "They can be overpowered because they're based purely on the amount of power of the caster puts into them, and can be brute forced past with enough power and a basic understanding of wards." His mind flitted to the ward schemes that he had used to protect the different rooms in the Slytherin house. He doubted that any of the Slytherin's would be able to tear his wards down. Though, because of the circumstances, even Dumbledore would have trouble with them.

It wasn't that he'd poured an obscene amount of power into the wards. But the wards of Hogwarts as a whole made dismantling them incredibly complicated, Especially as he made some of them hard to discern from other general wards in the castle.

And… if Dumbledore, or some Slytherins working together, overpowered the wards... Harry suppressed a smirk, the intent based wards were only the first line of defense,

Perenelle smiled, pleased at Harry's response. She had discovered that she really enjoyed engaging with the young man. She had worrying concerns about his emotional health and well being, but he had a major interest in wards, one of her two areas of expertise and more importantly a massive amount of talent for it.

She nodded, "Wards cannot be attuned against a powerful nebulous foe without possessing their blood to ward against, or specific magic to ward against."

Harry nodded, "That's true, though Dumbledore had a pet Death Eater that was marked with Voldemort's mark. So he did have a sample of Voldemort's magic."

Perenelle smiled a bit, enjoying the discussion, though her tone was thoughtful. "A ward like that would be incredibly complex and difficult to unravel. Guarding against Death Eaters, the Dark Lord, and any ill intent? I… might be able to come up with something that would do that, if I had a decade, a Death Eater and a sample of the dark lord's magic… maybe. I'm still not certain it would fulfill that purpose though. And blood wards doing it? Not a chance."

"Yes, I know. I've never known wards to behave like that. Then again I have very little experience with blood wards, and there's no history or literature on them that I was able to browse. Whatever resources my mother used was destroyed, looted from their home, or were never there to begin with. And by the time I knew enough about wards to analyze them, the wards were long gone." Harry replied.
