Chapter 530: An Opportunity to Pick Up Money
A few days later, Arthur finally shed most of his bandages.
The moment he shook out his shirt, put it on, and spun around, he felt reborn.
"Been waiting a while? Here, download this app on your phone."
As soon as Arthur got into the car after being discharged from the hospital, Forrest tossed him a business card with a QR code.
"What is this?" Arthur asked.
"It's an app for recording the recent desert event, made by a betting and entertainment company from the White Eagle Alliance called 'Phobos.' You can log in with facial recognition. They've given 'Super Accounts' to professional competitive players from all the alliances, so you don't need to register."
Event recording... entertainment company...
Hearing these words together, Arthur once again felt how far off the rails this incident had gone. It really had turned into a global entertainment event.
He downloaded it and logged in, only to find that the app was already incredibly feature-rich. And it had only been a few days.
"There's already so much content? Let's see... real-time odds, dynamic leaderboards, highlight reels, categorized forums. Huh, the sections are pretty comprehensive."
Arthur marveled at the colorful interface.
Forrest explained with a smile, "Of course. Rumor has it Phobos hired dozens of programmers and over a hundred Porygon, working around the clock for 70 hours straight to rush this out. It launched simultaneously worldwide, with real-time data updates. The global download count is already nearing three billion."
"..."
Arthur felt a mix of resignation and amazement. This truly was an age of entertainment until death.
He browsed through a few sections and then asked curiously, "How do they record the battle results posted here?"
Forrest, stopped at a red light, pointed to the sky. Several Staraptor were flying overhead, each carrying a palm-sized monocular camera strapped to its chest.
"See? They rely on these Flying-type Pokémon. Phobos reportedly dispatched over 150,000 Flying-types into the desert just for the initial phase, following everyone around and syncing data in real-time. I heard they're even negotiating with the Seven Chieftains to hire local Sigilyph. Anyway, they have money, so you don't need to worry about that."
Arthur nodded.
In the short time it took to drive back to his accommodation, he had already watched three trainer battles in the desert on the app. Each match had betting odds, and you could even tip the "players." Arthur sighed again: These city folk really know how to play.
Arthur also noticed that you could bet on more than just who would find the most compatible Seed for Groudon and win the "Grand Prize." You could bet on all sorts of weird things:
Who would have the most wins and highest points during the "event"?
Who would earn the most tips?
Who would find the most Seed Pokémon by the end of the event?
Who would defeat the most desert Chieftains solo?
And so on...
You could bet on anything. If you could think of it, they probably had odds for it. They really were committed to entertainment.
The one Arthur was most interested in was the wins and points leaderboard.
"So, as long as the battle is recorded by a camera and follows the rules of not harming the trainer, you can accumulate wins and points?"
Forrest glanced at him. "Yes. Why? Are you interested?"
Arthur smiled.
He had been feeling a bit disgruntled. After all, he had risked his life and suffered serious injuries to turn the situation around, only for it to be turned into an entertainment event so quickly. It was hard not to feel a bit unreconciled.
But now, it was fine. He seemed to have found a way to compensate himself.
"How long does the event last?" he asked.
"According to the agreement with the Legendaries, the deadline for delivering the Seeds is the end of next month."
So, over forty days. That was enough!
Arthur immediately found the betting page for the final points leaderboard winner.
Hearing the continuous sounds of facial recognition and payment operations coming from the passenger seat, followed by Arthur answering a call from the bank, Forrest chuckled.
"What, you placing a bet too? Careful not to get carried away."
"I know."
"What are you betting on? The points leaderboard? Who are you betting on? My captain, Grayson, is also participating. He should be arriving in a couple of days; he even withdrew from the League Cup registration for this. Interested in betting on him?"
"I'm betting on myself."
Forrest raised an eyebrow. "Oho, confident, aren't we? How much are you betting? I heard Roman from the Metro Team bet a hundred thousand on himself. pretty bold."
"Everything."
Forrest froze for a moment, not processing it. "When you say 'everything,' you mean...?"
"Everything in my bank account. Oh, I left a hundred and twenty. Enough for food for the next few days."
"..."
Forrest suddenly understood why Arthur had received a cross-alliance long-distance call from the bank. Large transactions naturally required multiple verifications...
Although he didn't know exactly how much money Arthur had in his account after two years of professional play, he at least remembered one thing: Starlight and Frost had just won the professional league championship. And calculating the time, the championship bonus had definitely been distributed.
He had called Roman bold. But now he was looking at someone truly savage who had gone all-in with his entire fortune without saying a word! The truly fierce don't talk much; they just act.
Forrest's hands on the steering wheel trembled slightly. "Isn't... isn't that a bit too much? That might not be a good idea."
Arthur nodded.
Forrest thought he had come to his senses.
But then Arthur turned to him and said, "You mentioned earlier that the Kubfu Alliance would remember my contribution, right? Can I get an advance on my reward?"
"..."
Forrest almost slammed on the brakes.
"No? Then can you lend me some?"
Forrest finally couldn't hold it back. "That's enough! Don't play so big! Famous trainers from all over the world are rushing here right now. Many of them aren't even here for the Legendaries or the Seeds; they're just here to battle! Do you know how deep the water is in the desert right now?!"
But Arthur seemed to have zero self-awareness. "I'll pay you back double afterwards. My odds are sixteen-something right now."
"..."
They were clearly not on the same wavelength.
Unfortunately, since Arthur had already won a Kubfu Alliance Professional League championship, Phobos had given him a Super Account. Even though he was just joining, his odds were only around sixteen. Arthur felt it was a pity.
If he were a complete unknown, with over fifty thousand participants already, the odds for a new player topping the leaderboard could have been over five hundred to one!
This was probably the first time since arriving in this world that Arthur realized: being famous too early wasn't always a good thing.
What a shame. He missed an opportunity to pick up free money.
