Attack. Attack. Attack.
Melissa's mind was consumed by a single thought—offense.
Her mantis blades clashed relentlessly against Roqi's katana. The force behind her strikes had increased by an entire tier, and the shock of impact traveled up the sleek blade, slamming directly into Roqi's grip.
Same strategy as always.
To slow down a mantis blade strike, you had to extend your opponent's activation window—from the muscle wind-up to blade acceleration to post-contact recovery. Roqi's tactic was simple: increase the force of his attacks, forcing Melissa to spend more time stabilizing and absorbing the impact.
In real combat, this might only be a difference of a few dozen milliseconds—but in a high-speed melee, those slivers of time accumulate, and that's where the tide turns.
But this tried-and-true tactic had one simple counter: hit back harder.
Which is exactly what Melissa was doing now.
"Wait—seriously? That guy can handle her at this level?"
A cold sweat formed on Joseph's brow.
Like everyone else in the training facility, he was entirely focused on the fight.
The first time he met Roqi, the man had been soaked in blood after wiping out an entire Tyger Claw building on Elonan Street. Then he casually fiddled with a scorched, bloodied corpse at the entrance like it was no big deal.
In Joseph's not-short career in MaxTac, few cyberpsychos had ever matched that level of violence—or combat prowess.
But Roqi? Just a "barely normal" guy.
Barely.
He even went toe-to-toe with Inspector Rory—and launched her across the room with a single kick.
Sure, she didn't try to stop him that time. But still—it said a lot.
The last time Melissa and Roqi trained was also in this very ring, and they had gone at it evenly.
That gave Joseph a fairly clear sense of Roqi's capabilities:
Terrifying.
But today, Rory wasn't falling back on agility. She'd activated power boost, and now she was fully Overdriven—holding nothing back.
That mode put immense strain on both cyberware and body.
The recoil alone could destroy anyone unprepared.
MaxTac brutes—even reserves—were tough enough to handle it. The difference came down to the quality of implants.
Take Militech's Falcon-series Sandevistan—a top-tier system. Once reserved for elite soldiers, it was now available to the public. But "Falcon" wasn't one specific model—just a high-performance Sandevistan line. Rival corps like Zetatech, Dynalar, and of course Arasaka had their own.
Sandevistans tricked the brain by speeding up neural response, creating a slow-motion illusion. In practice, the user moved so fast that enemies couldn't react. An untrained shooter would empty a mag before realizing the target had already repositioned behind them.
Naturally, the better the unit, the greater the toll. Without deep physiological modifications, using a high-end Sandevistan—or multiple implants—could cause irreversible damage.
Worst case?
Cyberpsychosis.
It wasn't some exotic syndrome. It was just the human body buckling under the weight of too much cyberware.
So MaxTac's brutal tactics weren't cruelty—they were precaution.
Besides Sandevistans, another favorite of MaxTac was the Berzerk OS.
Manufactured by Moore Technologies and BioDyne, the Berzerk system took a different approach—by altering neural signals and regulating hormones to massively boost combat capability. Particularly strength. The results were often frightening.
Typically, no one ran both Sandevistan and Berzerk. The overlapping stimulation to the nervous system was too high. Trigger both at once, and the system crashes.
Melissa was the exception.
She had both.
Top-tier, full-body modified, even down to her prefrontal cortex.
No wonder she used Overdrive Mode like a madwoman.
Then again, maybe that's why she fought like one.
Roqi felt it—pure, imminent danger.
A blade came for his face. He dodged, but Melissa stayed on him, capitalizing on the gap, launching a full-scale assault.
WHAM!!
Roqi panicked, planted his foot, and launched himself almost eight meters straight up.
But the jump was vertical. No angle. When he landed, Melissa would just cleave him.
PSSHHHT—!!
Two jets of compressed gas exploded from his calves. With a deafening hiss, he bent his trajectory mid-air and appeared over ten meters away.
"Aerial boost?!"
The spectators lit up. Roqi had just drawn a sharp angle mid-air, a feat well beyond standard tendon reinforcements.
He wobbled on landing, but didn't counter immediately.
He was familiar with his leg mods—great for positioning, mobility, or carrying heavy gear. Their strength was terrifying. He could probably punt Melissa across the ring.
But this was his first time activating the turbo jet boosters.
The instant they fired, the inertia felt like it would rip his soul out. The G-force was unreal.
Still, no time to think. Melissa was already charging again—blades deadly as ever.
But Roqi's kit had more tricks than just propulsion.
He stepped past Melissa, then pivoted in mid-air, exposing his calf. A diagonal burst from the booster sent him slamming behind her in an instant.
In a matter of frames, the match was decided.
Roqi didn't strike—but he could've.
One combo: forward dash, slash, vanish. Not even a Berzerk-less Sandevistan user could've matched that.
It was just too fast.
Only his dampening system prevented a painful landing. Without it, the speed alone would've sent him rolling.
"You lost," Roqi said.
But before he could gloat, Melissa surged forward again. Her mantis blades tore through the air with terrifying screeches.
CRACK!!
One of the ring's ropes snapped.
These blades could pierce concrete. "Sharp" didn't even begin to describe it.
Berzerk Mode truly lived up to its name. Once triggered, it wouldn't stop until the mission—or the opponent—was done.
Roqi dodged again and again. Afterimages blurred the spectators' vision.
Melissa... finally stopped.
She stood in the center of the ring, knees slightly bent, blades lowered but at the ready.
Just when Roqi thought it was over, she snapped her head up, locked onto him, and charged.
BAM!
THUD—!!
The first sound was the collision. The second was Roqi hitting the ground hard.
PAIN.
Like, brain-rattling, eye-watering pain.
If this hadn't been a rubber training mat—and if Roqi weren't built like a tank—he'd be concussed or worse.
CLANG!!
A mantis blade embedded itself five centimeters from his ear.
CLANG!!
Then the other.
Steel hemmed him in. Roqi froze.
No counter. This was training. Dangerous, yes—but controlled.
But the pressure—
Melissa had straddled his waist, pinning him.
She leaned over him, cheeks flushed, light sweat across her brow. Her hair fell across her cheek.
Her glistening skin and toned frame only made things worse. Her collarbones, her flat abdomen, and the way her body moved—Roqi couldn't look away.
"Too... close..."
Even Roqi—legendary perv—turned his gaze aside, embarrassed.
He knew this wasn't that kind of situation. Melissa was just exhausted from Overdrive.
Still. Her powerful legs, tight training pants, pressed against him—
It was dangerously hot.
"People are going to misinterpret this!!"
Roqi glanced around, hoping for rescue—only to find the entire MaxTac squad cheering like lunatics.
"Your priorities are broken!!"
"Okay, okay, I give up! You're the best!"
Roqi tried raising his hands in surrender—then remembered the blades.
"Is this some kind of... floor kabedon?!"
It was just too weird.
Melissa's eyes glimmered. Her smug expression softened—maybe satisfied?
Last time she lost momentum, she didn't look this happy.
"How long are you planning to sit there?"
That was Mower's voice.
She stood at the edge of the ring, arms crossed, voice flat—but clearly annoyed.
Roqi turned, eyes pleading for help.
Mower suddenly had the urge to drag him away right then and there.
"I won," Melissa said with a grin, basking in victory like a triumphant warrior.
Her lips curled in a satisfied arc.
And Roqi finally understood:
For a battle freak like Melissa, winning a fight wasn't just a thrill—
It was bliss.
Even if it meant pain or exhaustion, she welcomed it.
But before you enjoy your win too much…
Could you please get off me?
Because if you keep grinding like that—
We might spontaneously combust.
Roqi was ready to cry.
