The apartment did not feel empty after Silas left.

It felt… suspended.

Like the air itself was holding its breath.

Ayla remained seated long after the door closed, her fingers still wrapped loosely around the glass of strawberry milk he had given her. The condensation had begun to bead and slide against her skin, cool and damp, but she didn't react. Her gaze stayed fixed somewhere beyond the table, not on anything real, not on anything she could name, just a distant point where her thoughts had collapsed into a stunned blur.

Marry me.

The words did not echo the way dramatic moments were supposed to. There was no cinematic ringing in her ears, no sharp intake of breath. Instead, they sat inside her chest like something heavy and solid, pressing downward, compressing her lungs with a quiet, relentless weight.

Marry me.

Her heartbeat stuttered.
