Armed Dragon LV7destroyed!
"With that, my Battle Phase is over. But my turn isn't finished yet."
Yugen smiled faintly and played another card from his hand.
"Next, I activate this card
the Spell Card, Metamorphosis!"
Chazz held his breath. "That card is..."
"By tributing a monster on my side of the field, I can Special Summon a Fusion Monster of the same Level," Yugen explained. "I tribute the Level 6 Ojama King on my field to Special Summon a Level 6 Fusion Monster!"
Chazz was still completely in the dark, but Alexis and the others were already gasping in horror.
In an Ojama deck piloted by Yugen, a Level 6 Fusion Monster... could it be...
"Come forth!"
Enveloped in an aura of light on Yugen's field, Ojama King dissolved into particles. In his place, a fierce gale whipped up as a slender, graceful figure glided down on razor-sharp ice skates.
"Level 6, Cyber Blader, Special Summoned in Defense Position!"
[Cyber Blader, DEF: 800]
In the physical card game, Cyber Blader had been re-adjusted to Level 7, but in the original anime it was Level 6, exactly matching Ojama King.
Just as expected!
Having witnessed this deadly combination before, Alexis, Misawa, and the rest of the onlookers began casting looks of profound sympathy at Chazz.
To have Yugen pull this brutal move against him in a nationally broadcast match...
Misawa said nothing, merely shaking his head over and over.
The gaze he directed toward Chazz was practically the look one gave a dead man.
"Cyber Blader? Isn't that Alexis's card? And in Defense Position?"
Clearly unfamiliar with the combo, Chazz furrowed his brows. "Are you serious right now?"
As a Level 6 powerhouse, Cyber Blader boasted 2100 ATK, but her DEF was a pitiful 800weaker than even low-level fodder. It was hard not to mistake this for a misplay.
"I activate my set card." Yugen snapped his fingers, triggering the backrow trap he had laid down at the very start of the duel. "Trap Card: Ojama Trio!
This Special Summons three Ojama Tokens to the opponent's field in Defense Position!"
[Ojama Token, DEF: 0] x3
The trio of green, yellow, and black tokens leapt onto Chazz's side of the field with practiced ease. One started sipping tea, one curled up snoring, and the third whipped out a newspaper to read.
Right on cue, the spirit of Ojama Yellow beside Chazz popped out in sheer excitement. "Hey! Dropping in for a visit?"
"Whoa, a fellow brother!" Ojama Yellow Token's eyes lit up.
Ojama Green Token grinned cheerfully. "Just coming over to chill and shoot the breeze."
"Come in, come in! Let me tell you, my boss is so stingy. He thinks I'm useless and never gives me screen time," the Ojama Yellow spirit whispered, heaving a sorrowful sigh. "Man, you guys have it so good! You picked the right big brother. Look at all that screen time you get..."
Ojama Black Token: "Zzz... snore..."
Chazz took a deep, shuddering breath.
Calm down. Do not get mad. Above all, as a duelist, tearing up cards is wrong. No matter how furious I get, I cannot rip this rotten yellow nuisance to shreds...
"Cyber Blader's effect," Yugen said with a chuckle. "When the opponent controls exactly three monsters, all Spells, Traps, and monster effects controlled by the opponent are negated."
Chazz's eyelids twitched violently.
All Spells, Traps, and monster effects negated?! Nani?! Cyber Blader has such a ridiculous lockdown ability?!
I never saw Alexis pull off anything like this before!
In the anime, Alexis had only ever triggered that third effect once throughout the entire series, normally relying only on the first two. As a result, anyone unfamiliar with the Cyber archetype had no idea she harbored such a game-ending hidden ability.
Stay calm, Chazz told himself, forcing down his panic. The lock only works while the opponent controls exactly three monsters. It looks terrifying on paper, but all I have to do to break it is summon another monster
"Field Spell, Ojama Country, effect activate," Yugen announced. "Once per turn, by sending one card with 'Ojama' in its name from the hand to the Graveyard, I can Special Summon one 'Ojama' monster from the Graveyard."
He briefly revealed a card in his hand before sending it to the Graveyard.
"I send the Trap Card 'Ojamable' from my hand to the Graveyard."
Yugen then accepted the card ejected from his Graveyard slot.
"And now, the Ojama monster in my Graveyard
Ojama King, revive!"
Ojama King bounded back onto the field, immediately striking a muscle-flexing pose and letting out a muffled, resonant bellow.
"Ojama, Ojama!"
Across from him, the three tokens and the spirit of Ojama Yellow burst into enthusiastic applause. "So handsome! So strong!"
Chazz had zero patience left for the obnoxious foursome because a horrifying realization had just struck him. "Wait, that guy's effect..."
"While Ojama King is face-up on the field, up to three of the opponent's Monster Zones cannot be used," Yugen declared. "Therefore, by his effect, I seal off the last two remaining Monster Zones on your field!
Ojama Seal!"
Ojama King growled in triumph: "Ojama, Ojama!"
With that, two holographic projections of little Ojama imps leaped out, planting their rumps firmly onto Chazz's only two open Monster Zonesone on the left, one on the right.
Complete zone lockdown!
Chazz stood there, utterly dumbfounded.
This... this...
Three tokens occupied three zones, and the remaining two were sealed by Ojama King's effect. In other words, he couldn't even summon a monster if he wanted to!
And without the ability to change the number of monsters on his field, Cyber Blader would permanently keep her power: "All card effects controlled by the opponent are negated."
How the hell am I supposed to play against this? I literally can't play any cards!
How on earth could such a foul, disgusting strategy exist in this world?!
Up in the stands, Chazz's two older brothers could no longer sit still. They surged to their feet, staring at the terrifying board state in sheer disbelief.
"A duel... can really be played like this?" Slade asked blankly, glancing at his brother beside him.
Jagger shook his head just as vacantly, his face practically spelling out: Don't ask me, I'm just a pencil-pushing politician, I don't know any more about card games than you do.
Yet even as complete laymen, the two brothers could clearly see
Isn't he completely dead in the water?!
"Next, I activate the Spell Card 'Card of Burial Magic.' By banishing three Spell Cards from my GraveyardPot of Greed, Reasoning, and Graceful CharityI draw two cards from my deck."
Drawing two fresh cards, Yugen swept his eyes over them and promptly set both face-down.
"I set two cards on the field, and end my turn."
Yugen offered an exceedingly polite bow.
"Now then, it is your turn, Classmate Chazz."
Chazz: "..."
Dead silence fell over the entire stadium.
Chazz did not draw, yet nobody thought it strange. In fact, more than a few spectators began to look upon him with genuine pity.
Granted, Chazz had never been popular at the Academy. Flaunting his elite status, he had always looked down his nose at others, demanding people clear the hallway whenever he walked through, surrounded by a flock of sycophants and lackeys.
Still, most people had merely found him annoying; he had never done anything to truly hurt anyone. Seeing him standing down there right now, everyone suddenly felt he wasn't so insufferable after all. He certainly didn't deserve this kind of torment...
"Actually, Chazz still has a fighting chance," the model student Misawa analyzed aloud. "While Ojama King is on the field, Ojama Country swaps the original ATK and DEF of all monsters on both sides.
Originally, an Ojama Token has 0 ATK and 1000 DEF, but under the swap, their ATK becomes 1000."
"What good is a thousand attack points?" Syrus asked blankly.
"Under normal circumstances, nothing. But look: Ojama King normally has 0 ATK and 3000 DEF. Under the swap..."
"His DEF becomes 0! The token could beat him, and then the seal on the last two Monster Zones would break!" Syrus realized with a start.
"Exactly. But take a look at the battle position of Yugen's Ojama King," Misawa pointed out.
[Ojama King, ATK: 3000]
"Ah, he's in Attack Position..." Syrus frowned. "So the token can't destroy him at all! Isn't that completely useless, then?"
"Haha, not entirely," Misawa chuckled, patiently breaking it down for his academically challenged peer. "Crashing a low-attack monster into a monster with higher defense will only cause you to take battle damage without destroying your own monster.
However, if you attack an Attack Position monster..."
"I get it now!" Syrus gasped. "So as long as Chazz switches one of his Ojama Tokens to Attack Position and crashes it into Ojama King in a suicide attack, the number of monsters on his field will drop to two!
Once that happens, Cyber Blader's total lockdown will break, and Chazz will be able to use card effects again!"
"Right. Though it will cost him 2000 Life Points to do it. A steep price, but he has no other choice," Misawa nodded.
Beside them, Alexis suddenly spoke up. "Do you really think it will be that simple?"
"Eh?" Syrus blinked again.
"Misawa, you should know better than anyone what kind of duelist Yugen is," Alexis said quietly. "Do you honestly think he wouldn't anticipate the one flaw in this imperfect lock?"
Syrus hesitated. "Alexis, you mean..."
Their gazes aligned, all falling onto the two set cards resting in Yugen's backrow.
"Indeed," Misawa nodded, his expression turning solemn. "That was what I was pondering just now. Chazz cannot use any card effects right now. He cannot summon monsters, cannot activate cardshe literally cannot make a single proactive play.
The only move available to him is switching a token to Attack Position and suicide-charging it. His course of action is completely fixed and predictable.
Yugen, on the other hand, has an endless array of answers."
"One of those set cards might be a trap that destroys Chazz the instant he declares an attack," Alexis added. "No matter what trap it is, a Chazz who cannot activate any effects has zero means of countering it."
"And even if it isn't an offensive trap, merely an attack-negating card would seal his fate just the same," Misawa said, shaking his head. "As long as Chazz's attack is shut down, his sole loophole disappears, and the board becomes an inescapable, ironclad prison.
Frankly speaking... if I were in Chazz's shoes, I can't think of a single way to win."
Syrus: "..."
Listening to the model student's step-by-step breakdown, Syrus turned his gaze back toward Yugen on the stage. There he stood, as calm and poised as ever, sporting that warm, gentlemanly, sunny smile.
Yet for some reason, the more one looked at that radiant smile, the colder one's spine felt.
Classmate Yugen really is terrifying...
