Chapter 351 - Chapter 351: End of Beginning

The trip back to Konoha was agonizingly slow. Moving at the slow pace of civilian carts made the distance feel especially cruel, knowing Genta and Shizuru had been rushed ahead with heavy injuries. Yet, despite the underlying anxiety for my teammates, my mental state remained remarkably stable. Taking the lives of those two assassins had not fractured my psyche or left me drowning in guilt. I found absolutely no fault in protecting the people I cared about. There was no burden weighing on my soul. Instead, I felt a cold, driving urgency.

I hated to admit it, but the terrifying ease with which the Raijin had manipulated lightning during my summoning fiasco was deeply inspiring. That memory, coupled with my current skill set, formed a perfect storm of opportunity. My medical knowledge was finally sufficient, and my understanding of fuinjutsu was at an all-time high. This recent enlightenment came directly from studying and modifying both Naruto and Gaara's seals, followed by the grueling process of deciphering the Flying Thunder God technique. The Uzumaki were absolute geniuses. They operated on an entirely different level regarding seal theory and application.

While most of my missions were relatively uneventful, the exceptions had nearly cost my friends and me our lives. There was no more room for hesitation. I could not afford to fear potential side effects anymore. I had to get stronger, and fast. It was time to physically etch the evolution of Stormdrive directly onto my body. Fusing my medical and fuinjutsu expertise would elevate me to new heights, forging a power to keep my loved ones safe. With my chakra reserves finally vast enough to support the full process, I stared down at the heavily modified seal array before me and felt a surge of excitement. This breakthrough would definitively push me over the edge.

I reviewed the extensive design for the tenth time, tracing every intricate stroke and formula. I was extremely pleased. Finding nothing else to adjust, a satisfied smile crept onto my face as I carefully stored the scroll away. I finally raised my head, letting a potent mix of lingering fear for my teammates and thrilling anticipation for the future wash over me as Konoha's massive walls rose on the horizon.

Once we reached the famous gates, I produced the mission scroll and cleared identity confirmation with the shinobi guarding the entrance. We then headed toward the Hokage building. A messenger had already been sent, so Fugaku, Shikaku, and Hirotaka were waiting for us upon arrival.

The moment the cart stopped, the lead samurai opened the door, and the Daimyo stepped out. A warm smile appeared on his face as he observed the peaceful atmosphere of the village.

Fugaku approached. "Lord Daimyo, it is a pleasure to meet you."

The Daimyo nodded. "Well, if it wasn't for this young Konoha shinobi here, I would not have made it." He pointed at me before continuing. "It is unfortunate, but apparently, we cannot maintain the safety of the Land of Grass, seeing as we were attacked within our own borders." His eyes darted almost imperceptibly to his guard, who shifted slightly. It was clear he intended to shake his Hidden Village's lenience regarding internal security.

Fugaku smiled faintly. "You do not have to worry about that anymore. We have received the incident details and are already extracting information from the corpses of the assassins. We will soon know who is behind this foolish attack and wipe them from the face of the earth. The Land of Fire Daimyo has made sure this is our top priority."

Clearly pleased with Konoha's fast action, the Grass Daimyo looked over at me. "Sorry to have caused you so much trouble, young man. I will ensure the Land of Fire Daimyo hears of your effort to secure me and my caravan."

I bowed slightly. "It is what is expected of me, Lord Daimyo. However, your words honor me."

He nodded in approval and moved toward the Hokage building with Fugaku and Hirotaka.

With my duties complete, I immediately flickered toward the hospital to check on Genta. Appearing suddenly in front of the entrance caused the gate guards to flinch before quickly relaxing. As a frequent visitor, they let me in without much fuss, though they were visibly surprised I wasn't injured for once.

Inside the lobby, I asked for Genta's room and hurried over. The trip home had taken a few grueling days due to the slow carts and frequent rest breaks the old Daimyo required.

Opening the door quietly, I found Takemura sitting near the window, a deeply troubled expression on his face. My eyes shifted to the hospital bed, and a wave of absolute relief hit me. Genta was resting peacefully, his severed arm miraculously reattached and heavily bandaged.

I sighed audibly. The sound grabbed Takemura's attention, and his eyes widened before he shot up from his chair and pulled me into a tight hug. "Noa, you are fine. I was so worried."

I was incredibly happy he wasn't angry with me. "Thank you, ojisan. How is Genta?"

He gripped my shoulders, thoroughly checking me for injuries, before his face mirrored my own relief. He patted my shoulder gently and sat back down, pure exhaustion returning to his features.

"I am sorry I wasn't fast or strong enough to prevent this," I said quietly.

Takemura shook his head firmly. "According to Shizuru, both of them would be dead if it wasn't for you. I should be thanking you."

Worry was still clear on my face. "How is Shizuru?"

"The kid is fine and already discharged," he replied. "I don't know how she managed it, but Shikaku came here and helped me push the administration to assign multiple high-level medical-nin to Genta's arm attachment procedure. This complicated process required flawless physical reattachment and elite healing jutsu to ensure the nerves connected properly. We were lucky the wards were mostly empty on that day, allowing Shikaku and me to pull it through after some heavy badgering."

I collapsed into a nearby seat, the remaining tension leaving my muscles. "I am so happy it worked. I wasn't entirely sure it would, but I acted purely on instinct when I sealed his severed arm and the stump on the battlefield."

Takemura gave me a look filled with profound gratitude. "Actually, the medics said the reattachment most likely wouldn't have worked without your fast action. Your fuinjutsu skills perfectly preserved the tissue. I owe you more than you can ever know, Noa."

I shook my head immediately. "You offered me a home and a family. That is enough payment for multiple lifetimes."

Takemura's eyes teared up slightly. He quickly wiped them away and coughed into his hand to regain his composure. "Look at me. Old age has made me terribly sentimental. I was an absolute demon back in my day."

I laughed along with him. A moment later, the door opened and Ayaka walked in. I recoiled slightly, fully expecting a flying kick to the face for evolving from her patient to someone who sends her new ones. To my utter surprise, she just smiled warmly.

"Good job ensuring the shinobi under your command returned home alive after such a dangerous mission," she said, before her eyes narrowed with clear suspicion. "And look at you. You aren't bleeding to death, which is usually the case when you visit me."

I shrank back a bit, but Takemura stepped in with the save. "He is completely fine. I have already checked."

A doubtful look flashed in her eyes before she walked over to Genta. Her hands glowed with a soothing green hue as she examined the bandaged arm. "He is very lucky. Being this young will allow his body to heal faster and adapt quickly, so he will regain normal function in his reattached arm in no time." She conducted a few more diagnostic checks before nodding in approval. "Alright, Takemura-sama, I will be back to check on him again soon."

I stood up as she turned to leave. "Can I ask you for something?"

She looked puzzled as I walked outside with her, waving back to Takemura to signal my quick return. "Is there a private room where we can talk?"

Genuine worry painted her face, and she quickly ushered me into her personal office.

As soon as we sat down, I summoned the scroll that focused mostly on the medical aspects of the Stormdrive evolution project and handed it across the desk. Clear interest showed on her face as she unrolled it and started reading.

"I have been studying medical texts for a long time now," I explained carefully. "However, I will never reach your level of expertise. I am working on a seal array that will fundamentally alter my body and chakra network. I based the biological and chakra optimization on my own studies. Could you please recheck my work and fix any mistakes? I am going to physically etch this formation onto my body, so there cannot be a single flaw."

Her eyes widened in sheer disbelief as she grasped the true scope of my project. The few fuinjutsu mechanics mentioned in the scroll were completely over her head, but the biological implications terrified her. "You are doing what?"

I held up a hand to stop her. "I cannot tell you exactly what I am planning. However, I desperately need your help, and I am more than willing to pay for it."

Anger quickly replaced her shock. "It is not about the money." She tapped the scroll aggressively. "That level of internal intrusion is extremely dangerous. It can easily kill you."

I sighed, keeping my voice steady. "You have to trust me. My sealing knowledge will carry me safely through the transformation, but I need your medical expertise to guarantee it."

She looked deep into my determined eyes before sighing heavily in defeat. Looking back down at the scroll, she grumbled under her breath. "You have done some very impressive work here, however..."

Her professional curiosity quickly took over. She grabbed a brush and started adjusting the underlying biological schematics, refining how the seals would interact with my veins, nerves, and heart to elevate the efficiency, effectiveness, and safety of the entire procedure. After all, she knew my body better than anyone else in the village, having spent countless hours undoing the damage I had sustained over the years.

A long time passed. She shooed away any nurses or medical-nin who came knocking, completely engrossed in the work until she was finally done. After making one last rigorous check, she looked up.

"Although medical knowledge is a part of your seal formation, it is a very small part," she noted. "That is why I was able to optimize it so quickly. I am certain the fuinjutsu portion is far more extensive."

I grinned and nodded.

"As a medical-nin, I must reiterate my clear professional opinion that this is insanely dangerous," Ayaka warned, her expression grave. "I am telling you again. please, do not go through with it."

I shook my head. "Given what happened on my last mission, there is no room for hesitation anymore." I looked her dead in the eyes. "Etching this seal is incredibly intrusive. The array will consume so much of my chakra to stabilize and activate that it will leave barely enough to keep my organs functioning. I will be hovering right at the edge of death, completely unconscious for Sixty days. It will take that long for the seal to become fully saturated with chakra. Once it is fully active, my body will finally be able to store chakra again and return to normal functionality. Before that happens, I will configure my home's security barrier to allow only you inside. Please make sure to keep the nutrient IV drips attached, replace them when they empty, and use medical ninjutsu to stimulate my muscles so they do not atrophy."

She looked actively worried now. I placed a heavy bag full of ryo directly on her desk. "I will not accept no for an answer. You are the only person I trust for this, so please do not tell anyone else."

She didn't even glance at the money, keeping her sharp eyes locked on mine. "Are you absolutely sure you want to go through with this?"

"It is my best way forward. Yes."

I waited a long time for her answer. Her face cycled through several expressions, making me worry she would refuse and tell the Hokage to lock me up. However, she eventually surprised me.

"If this will prevent you from getting injured in the future and allow you to protect yourself and your friends, then I will do it."

I bowed deeply. "Thank you, truly." I stood up, feeling a massive weight lift from my shoulders. "I will begin etching the seal later tonight. I cannot tell Shisui sensei because he might put me under an eternal genjutsu so I wouldn't think about this again, and I cannot tell Takemura-ojisan or he might hit me so hard on the head that I forget my own name. Please take care of handling them for me. And visit me in the morning to attach the IV and make sure I am not dead."

Before she could say another word, I was already rushing out the door.

After waving goodbye to Takemura and checking on Genta one last time, I headed straight for the Nara compound. I found out Shizuru was asleep and recovering. Not wanting to wake her despite her parents' insistence, I simply left a specialized scroll that only she could open. Inside, I explained my plan, justified my upcoming disappearance, and asked her to keep an eye on Genta, Naruto, and Sena.

I then moved rapidly to the Hokage building. Luckily, Fugaku was alone in his office. He was preparing for the preliminary talks with the Grass Daimyo, taking advantage of the quiet while the dignitary rested at his temporary residence before their upcoming departure to the capital.

I entered and bowed deeply. "Lord Hokage, I know you are incredibly busy right now, but I must ask you for a favor."

Fugaku, Hirotaka, and Shikaku were reviewing important documents. Fugaku glanced up. "What is it, Noa? I do not have much time."

"I would like to request a sixty-day leave of absence." I said, nodding in understanding. "I have extremely important training to do and will need to isolate myself completely for that entire period."

Fugaku immediately stopped reviewing his papers. Shikaku and Hirotaka also paused, eyeing me with intense curiosity.

"It is highly critical for my growth as a shinobi, Lord Hokage," I added smoothly. "I would greatly appreciate it if you granted me this request."

A knowing smile tugged at Hirotaka's lips, as if he were privy to a secret I hadn't shared, while Fugaku kept his sharp, unwavering gaze focused entirely on me. After a long moment, the Hokage nodded. "I will grant your request. Do you need any resources or assistance?"

I shook my head. "Allowing me this time is more than enough."

I bowed respectfully before leaving the office in a hurry, ready to begin.

Reaching the Senju compound late at night, I walked slowly across its empty grounds, taking deep breaths of the cold, refreshing air. Given how late it was, the elders and Naruto were already asleep.

Once inside my house, I made the final modifications to the seal formation based on Ayaka's adjustments, which took some time. I then ate a massive feast, washed the plates, and cleaned the house to ensure everything was in pristine condition.

I took one last look at the final master scroll. It was the culmination of everything I had learned over the past few years. My plan to evolve Stormdrive relied on a massive, four-layered seal array designed to completely rewrite how my biology handled lightning chakra.

The foundation was the Chakra Regulation Seals. These intricate formulas would automatically manage the sheer volume of lightning flowing into my limbs, preventing the agonizing nerve and muscle damage caused by electrical over-stimulation. It would keep the technique perfectly stable without me needing to consciously regulate it during combat.

Built directly over that was the Direct Conduit Network. Born entirely from my intensive medical studies, this second layer would map out artificial express lanes extending from my abdomen to vital areas like my head and heart. Instead of forcing volatile lightning through my body's natural, slower tenketsu pathways, the chakra would travel safely through these new fuinjutsu-based conduits to drastically reduce the wear and tear on my internal organs.

The third layer handled Excess Discharge. It would capture any stray lightning chakra bleeding out of those primary channels and instantly recycle it into my Static Shield and Static Sphere. This turned my defensive jutsu into a passive byproduct of my raw offense, letting me deflect attacks and enhance my close-range sensing with zero loss of efficiency.

Finally, the fourth and most difficult layer was the Living Equation. Inspired by the legendary Nine-Tails' seal and the Flying Thunder God, this final layer acted as the automated brain of the entire system. It constantly coordinated the first three layers, adjusting them in real-time based on my physical state and chakra output to ensure longevity and perfect utilization of every ounce of chakra, while still giving me the freedom to make manual adjustments if needed.

I stared down at the complex ink patterns one last time. It was a true masterpiece of fuinjutsu and medical theory. Now, I just had to survive etching it permanently into my flesh.

Taking the deepest breath of my life, I cracked my neck and rolled my shoulders. I started drawing the huge seal formation on the floor of my house, growing a bit worried when I almost ran out of space. I had to clear some furniture out of the way, a meticulous process that took a long time. I stopped to observe and conduct a final review of the formation before forming a single hand seal. The heavy barrier around the house flared to life, and I made absolutely sure Ayaka's chakra signature would be the only one allowed inside.

I formed another hand sign, and two shadow clones appeared next to me, their eyes completely cold and focused. I stripped off my clothes and lay down in the circle at the center of the formation. My body was shaking slightly. Unsure if the trembling was from the cold, the mounting tension, or genuine worry, I pushed through it.

I was entirely confident in my etching abilities by now. My understanding of fuinjutsu and clone mastery had reached a point where my copies would remain perfectly stable while performing the intricate, surgery-level etching.

I reached into my discarded clothes, withdrew a specialized pill, and swallowed it. The pill was designed to completely dull my nervous system and knock me into a deep, immediate sleep. I did not want to experience the mind-shattering pain of having my flesh and chakra network carved open simultaneously.

My clones stored my clothes and then formed a hand sign, activating the huge seal formation before moving into position and drawing the chakra scalpels Master Shuzo had given me. They ignited the blades with a sharp hum. I was terrified, but this was exactly what needed to be done.

I closed my eyes as the heavy sedative rapidly pulled my consciousness into darkness. Either this void would be my reality for all eternity, a simple, quiet, and peaceful non-existence, or I would experience a rebirth, waking up as something much more than human.
