Chapter 14 - The aftermath of the meeting

The corridor felt unusually quiet as we left the conference room. The echoes of our footsteps bounced softly off the polished marble floors, yet the silence between Young Master Jacob and me was heavy, almost suffocating. My hands tingled with the lingering adrenaline from the meeting, and my mind replayed every question the investors had asked, every answer I had given, each one now sharpened under the weight of his gaze.

Young Master Jacob walked beside me, his posture rigid, his gaze sharp as a blade, expression unreadable. I dared to glance at him. His eyes, normally stormy and commanding, held a quiet intensity today now that made my pulse stutter …..was it approval, calculation, or something else entirely? The warmth in the air seemed to thrum between us with an invisible current, making each step feel deliberate, measured, intimate.

"You handled yourself well,Am impressed " Mr. Reg said quietly, falling into step behind me. His orange-gold eyes sparkled with amusement, but there was that familiar glint of something I couldn't place watchful, knowing. "Most would have faltered under that kind of scrutiny."

I forced myself to swallow the lump in my throat. "Thank you," I murmured. My voice felt small, almost fragile, even to me. After a long pause, Young Master Jacob's voice broke through, low, commanding, yet carrying an edge that sent a shiver down my spine. "Jennie… this mansion, its staff, the job… are you settling in properly? Or is it already too much for you?"

I swallowed hard, forcing my voice steady. "I… I am adjusting, Young Master Jacob. It's a lot to take in, but I am learning. The staff… they are different and efficient at their jobs."

His eyes narrowed, studying me like a predator. "Different? Efficient? Or… fearful? Tell me, Jennie, do they intimidate you? Do you feel… out of place among them?"

"I…..I….I am…. managing, Young Master Jacob," I said carefully, my pulse quickening as his gaze pinned me. "I respect their… professionalism, and I am observing to learn how best to perform my duties."

He let out a low, sharp sound, half snarl, half chuckle. The sound vibrated in my chest. "Observation alone will not save you, maybe me. The mansion does not forgive hesitation. Every glance, every word, every action is measured by them, by me. Do you understand?"

"Yes, Young Master Jacob," I whispered, my stomach tightening as his presence pressed close, a force I could not ignore. "I… I will be vigilant. I will not disappoint you."

"See that you do," he said, his tone final, leaving no room for argument. "You are not here to make friends, Jennie. The staff… the house… even I… will not coddle weakness. Do you comprehend the kind of strength required, kitten?"

"I do, Young Master Jacob," I said, my voice firmer now, though my heart raced and warmth pooled in my chest. "I will meet your expectations."

The hallway stretched before us, silent except for our measured footsteps. His gaze never left me, assessing, demanding, reminding me that in this mansion, nothing even a heartbeat escaped notice. Each step seemed charged, weighted with unspoken rules, unspoken attraction, a tension that hummed between us.

We reached the grand office, and Young Master Jacob stopped, hands clasped behind his back, his expression unreadable but commanding. "Tell me, Jennie… the other staff, Miss Lily, Mr. Reg… are you learning their ways? Are you noticing what is said and what is left unsaid?"

"Well it's a new experience for me, Young Master Jacob," I replied, careful not to let my nerves betray me. "I… I notice. I am trying to understand their… hierarchy and… behavior."

He stepped closer, the space between us shrinking with an almost imperceptible gravity. "Good. You must. In this mansion, nothing is random, nothing is without purpose. You will survive here only if you see beyond appearances, Jennie. Do not forget this."

"I will remember, Young Master Jacob," I said, my voice steady despite the tightening in my chest and the thrum of awareness that came from being near him.

He gave a curt nod, then resumed walking into the office, his footsteps echoing through the marble floors like deliberate drumbeats. I followed, every sense heightened, aware that even a single misstep could carry consequences I could not yet imagine and aware that his scrutiny lingered long after he spoke.

Miss Lily appeared silently from outside the door, her movements graceful and precise. Her eyes flickered toward me, and for the briefest moment, I felt the weight of her scrutiny. "Dinner will be served soon. May I borrow Miss Jennie for some help?" she said softly. Young Master Jacob nodded briefly, signaling me to leave. Miss Lily gently guided me toward my room. "Rest while you can, child. You have had a rough day. I will bring dinner up for you."

I watched her glide away as I made my way back to my room , the soft click of her heels fading into the shadows. The mansion loomed around us, alive with quiet power. Every corner, every shadow seemed to watch. And as I followed Miss Lily, I felt it in every step: the night would only deepen the tests awaiting me and every glance from Young Master Jacob would linger far longer than the echoes of our footsteps.
