My chest tightened at the sight of Kai lying on the hospital bed—machines surrounding him, tubes and wires keeping him alive. Even the bed was specially designed to support his back.
My best friend.
My cousin.
And yet… a bad man.
Livana once told me that evil people don't die easily.
So I'm counting on that.
"What are you thinking?" Sophia asked.
"He's evil," I replied flatly. "He won't die easily."
She rolled her eyes.
"He better wake up. It's been three days, Damon."
"He will." I patted her back. "Now go to your room and rest. I'll take care of him."
"I'll stay here."
She didn't move.
"Sophia, come on—"
I reached for her—and to my surprise, she collapsed.
I caught her head and back just in time as Francis rushed in and scooped her up without hesitation.
He didn't even think twice.
I was about to follow them, but my eyes shifted back to Kai.
And the promise I made to Sophia.
I can't leave him.
She'd kill me.
