Chapter 2 - ❂2. Star Rain [ II ] ❂

WEE!! OOH!! WEE!! OOH!! WEE!! OOH!!

The rhythmic sounds of sirens invaded his senses, bringing with it another wave of pain.

He groaned.

"Why am I in so much pain...?" he thought, his blurred vision finally recognizing he was no longer in the forest with his father.

"What's going on...?" he thought, trying to remember what happened.

The scent of blood hit his nostrils, both from within and without.

This brought with it a realization.

He was no longer in the dream, the same dream that had haunted him ever since his father passed.

"..." He could only remain silent, unsure of his current predicament, his mind on the dream, a wish for his long-lost father to be once again in his life.

"The ambulance is here..."

Someone cried out, his thoughts interrupted.

His attention no longer on the pain, he could hear muffled sounds around, footsteps, chattering, and the heavy breathing of people.

He was surrounded.

"..."

"Children are really cruel these days..." One of the sounds cut through the noise, feminine, probably one of the busybody aunties.

"I heard it was a couple of adults who did this to him..." Then another replied, also feminine.

"It seems they don't fear the World Government..."

"..."

"I hear he was beaten for trying to save someone..."

"He tried to be a hero?!..."

"..."

"..."

"..."

He could barely make out what they were saying, but the little he got was enough to trigger his memory.

How… he had just woken up from a dream, yet he wasn't on his bed, but lying face-down in the grass, bleeding.

"Make way!" Two male voices sounded simultaneously, the rowdiness calming.

The sound of footsteps approached him.

"Who is there...?" he thought, hoping it was help, as he truly needed it.

"Slowly, be careful." Following these words, he felt a grip on his body as he was rolled onto the stretcher, his gaze now facing upwards, locking onto the beautiful night sky above.

Numerous shooting stars, like rain that never lands, painted the night sky.

The scene finalizing his thoughts.

"I was here to watch the meteor shower," he remembered.

Fragments of memories, the reason he was in such a state, resurfaced.

He and his elder sister had come to the park to watch the star rain, as they called it, meteor showers passing over the planet.

He had excused himself to find a place to do number one and, by chance, happened to stumble upon three grown men ganging up on a young girl his age.

They looked shady, probably kidnappers.

He wanted to run for help, but where they were, there was no one around, too far from the crowd.

As most would, he decided to interfere, shouting to scare them, but that didn't work as they noticed him, a small boy trying to play the hero.

They ignored him.

There was no one around to hear it anyway; the star rain was basically a festival, stalls installed, vendors hawking their wares, while the crowd moved around rowdily.

Most would have run out of there, but he decided to play the hero.

Kicking one of the three grown men.

Annoyed, the man counterattacked, but to his surprise, the young boy who looked to be sixteen, though he was only thirteen, dodged his attack.

This enraged him, as the boy would dodge and throw an attack of his own, his last blow, a roundhouse kick, drawing blood from his nostrils.

The other two, noticing their comrade's state, let go of the girl as they all ganged up on him.

He quickly ran, his gaze on the girl as she took off to safety, but he wasn't safe.

Before he could get into the crowd, the three guys caught up to him.

He didn't cower in fear at the sight of the three men; it wasn't a one side beating, but they fought, and he lost.

They left him half dead, their conditions better but their egos bruised as all three bled to a degree.

They had only left because more and more people were being drawn to the scene; if not, they would have killed him.

He passed out, waking to his current predicament.

"Hahaha, I guess I wasn't strong enough..." He laughed internally. "At least she got to safety..." A crooked smile formed on his severely wounded face.

The paramedics only shot him a curious glance as they noticed his smile, carefully positioning him in the back of the ambulance.

They didn't know why he smiled, believing it was because help had finally come.

"Don't worry, lad, we will patch you up nicely," one of the paramedics smiled as he sat by his side, administering first aid.

The siren rang as the ambulance sped away.

"I hope he makes a speedy recovery," the busybody aunty clasped her hands in prayer.

"Why wouldn't he mind his business? This is not a heroic comic," a man in his early twenties couldn't help but snicker, his disdain for the boy's actions evident.

Everyone had their thoughts.

Some, a great topic for gossip; to most, a regular Tuesday.

Fate, which even uses the wingbeat of a butterfly to cause tornadoes, had other plans.

Strange microscopic dust particles slowly descended from the vacuum of space, specifically from the thousands of meteors passing over the planet.

The star rain.

They, like miniature assassins, breached the ozone layer, facing no hindrance as they became one with the air.

The whole of Earth's atmosphere was quickly filled with these microscopic dust particles.

Within seconds of their entry, they merged with the gases of the air, becoming part of its chemical makeup.

Any and all creatures that required air inhaled the unknown gas.

To most, the strange dust did nothing. Like nitrogen gas, it was useless, being pushed in and out of their lungs as they breathed.

But to a few, compared to the lot, the dust merged with their cells, to the nuclear level, merging with their DNA as if they were a missing piece.

The young lad included.

Unbeknownst to him, his cells were undergoing a metamorphosis as they easily accepted the foreign substance as their own.

His body, ever so slightly, a millisecond faster, began to heal.

He knew not what was happening to him as he drifted back into slumber.
