Hashirama, who had been urging restraint, suddenly moved.
His hands clapped together, the ground rumbling as countless tree spikes, like spears, pierced Orochimaru's body.
Blood sprayed, shocking everyone.
No one expected Hashirama to be so ruthless.
"Cough, cough, First Hokage, save your strength. If there's anyone in this world who's hard to kill, that snake would be second to none," Kai said, touching his nose.
The impaled Orochimaru twitched, and to everyone's disgust, a pair of pristine white hands emerged from his throat, reaching into his mouth.
Pulling his teeth apart, Orochimaru forcefully tore open his mouth, and a slimy, boneless body, covered in saliva, slid out.
The gruesome sight was sickening.
"Ugh!"
A retching sound came from the Akatsuki members.
Even Konan hugged herself, trembling.
"That's the Monkey's student? Disgusting," Hashirama said, rolling his eyes. "But since we can't kill him, let's not."
"That's not our concern as the dead."
Seeing the First Hokage suddenly disengage, everyone understood why Madara had initially belittled them.
"But you, kid, how did you become a rogue ninja? Last time we met, I thought you'd be Hokage someday," Hashirama turned to Kai.
Black Zetsu perked up. If he could turn Hashirama against Kai, he could turn the tide.
"First Hokage-sama, you don't know. Kai, after defecting from Konoha, secretly hunted down the Third Raikage, Third Mizukage, and Third Kazekage. The tailed beasts and jinchuriki weren't spared. He now controls three tailed beasts and plans to wage war against the five great nations," Black Zetsu launched into his strongest verbal attack.
"First Hokage-sama, as the hero who brought peace, you wouldn't want to see the ninja world plunged into chaos again. If he gathers all nine tailed beasts, who can stop him?"
His words were persuasive and emotional. A few tears would have made it perfect.
"Are you finished?" Hashirama paused, then laughed heartily. "Madara, did you see that? I said Konoha has great talent. Killing the Third Raikage, Third Mizukage, and Third Kazekage... impressive."
"If he captures all nine tailed beasts someday, I'd love to fight him and see who's stronger. Capturing tailed beasts is easy peasy."
His unrestrained laughter echoed, silencing the battlefield. Even Black Zetsu was speechless.
He thought revealing Kai's evil deeds would incite Hashirama's anger. But things didn't go as planned.
"First Hokage-sama, aren't you angry? He's a Konoha rogue ninja!" Black Zetsu asked, his face grim.
"So what? I'm dead. I can't interfere," Hashirama said, rolling his eyes. "Besides, he didn't kill the Hokage. It's none of my business."
"Hashirama's right. The ninja world is survival of the fittest. To kill or be killed is the way of the strong," Madara coldly snorted. His gaze locked onto Kai. "I admit you killed me once."
"But I was at death's door. Even using forbidden techniques, burning my life force, I was only at twenty or thirty percent of my peak strength. Your victory was undeserved."
"Now, I'm at fifty percent of my strength. Breaking free from Edo Tensei is easy."
His words were like thunder.
Madara moved, weaving hand seals. A black light, like a phantom, warped into the void.
"Edo Tensei Release!"
Madara and Kai's connection was severed.
Kai hadn't implanted control seals like Orochimaru or Kabuto.
This control worked on ordinary Edo Tensei targets but not on a legendary ninja like Madara.
Black Zetsu's face lit up. He quickly flattered Madara. "Madara-sama, congratulations on breaking free! But..."
He glanced at Hashirama. Madara was temporarily on their side, but if Hashirama helped Kai, the tide could still turn.
"Hehe, don't stare at me. I won't interfere. Unless he tries to forcefully control me," Hashirama winked at Kai.
Compared to Orochimaru and Danzo, who performed disgusting transmutations and human experiments, Kai, who had killed three Kage, seemed almost cute.
Kai shook his head, smiling, and looked at Madara.
"First Hokage-sama, stay back. I've been waiting. I thought I'd only face a few weaklings, but now I can finally warm up."
"I said I could kill you once, twice, even thrice. Are you ready for round three?"
