Chapter 34 - Seeds of shadow

‎The city still glistened under a morning drizzle, but the quiet in Ava's apartment was heavy, almost unnatural. Liam Revel sat at the small kitchen table, coloring with intense focus, while Ava leaned against the counter, arms crossed, replaying Claudia's words in her mind.

‎Ethan entered quietly, carrying two mugs of coffee. His gaze lingered on Ava before he handed her one.

‎"Sleep helped?" he asked softly.

‎She shook her head, but allowed a small smile. "Enough to think straight… but not enough to feel safe."

‎He took a seat beside her, fingers brushing hers on the counter. "We've survived worse, Ava. Claudia's lies won't last."

‎Ava's eyes flicked toward Liam, who hummed to himself, oblivious to the undercurrents swirling around him. "It's not just lies anymore. She's planting traps, Ethan. This isn't just about me… or you. It's him too."

‎Ethan's jaw tightened. "Then we make sure she can't touch him."

‎A quiet pause filled the room before Ava spoke again. "I want to know everything, Ethan. No more half-truths, no more guessing. Who are we really dealing with?"

‎Ethan sighed, leaning back. "Claudia isn't just manipulative she's calculated. Every move is designed to destabilize, to test loyalty… to break people."

‎Ava clenched her mug tightly. "And Victoria?"

‎"She's… opportunistic," Ethan admitted. "Always watching, waiting to see which side she benefits from."

‎Liam suddenly looked up. "Mummy… is she going to come here?"

‎Ava froze, then shook her head, forcing a reassuring smile. "No, baby. We're stronger than that."

‎Cole Estate – Morning

‎Claudia paced slowly through her private wing of the mansion, heels clicking like distant gunshots. Victoria followed silently, eyes darting toward her mentor, unsure whether to speak or stay silent.

‎"She's awake," Victoria said finally.

‎Claudia didn't turn. "Of course she is. Do you think a woman like Ava can sleep knowing I've set the world on fire around her?"

‎Victoria swallowed. "And Liam?"

‎Claudia's lips curved in a faint, cruel smile. "The boy is leverage. He always has been. But even leverage can be… fragile."

‎She moved to the window, gazing at the city below. "They think the lie failed. They think we're finished."

‎Victoria stepped closer. "But they're together. And that… that's dangerous for you."

‎Claudia turned sharply, eyes glinting. "Danger is only dangerous if you fear it. Fear is what keeps people in line. And right now… fear is the weapon they don't yet see."

‎Daniel Okoro Later That Morning

‎Daniel poured himself a cup of tea in the quiet of his apartment. The city buzzed faintly outside the window, but he was alone with memories and regrets. His phone buzzed.

‎It was Ethan.

‎"We need your guidance. Claudia's next move… what do we do?"

‎Daniel exhaled slowly. "You don't fight shadows with fire, Ethan. You fight them with light. And the light is truth. But be careful the closer you get, the more she will push."

‎Ethan's response was sharp, almost bitter. "And if she pushes too far?"

‎Daniel's voice was calm, almost mournful. "Then you survive. And you protect what matters. Liam. Ava. Yourself. Don't forget the past is powerful, but it can't win if you control the present."

‎Ava's Apartment – Afternoon

‎Ava sat at her desk, the journal open once more. Liam sat beside her, toys spread across the floor. She traced her fingers over the pages of her mother's writings, absorbing the courage and foresight of Margot Bennett.

‎Ethan appeared behind her, leaning over the chair. "You know… reading that, you realize how much strength she passed to you," he said softly.

‎Ava nodded. "And how much Claudia fears it. Everything she does… it's because she knows I can't be controlled like my mother could."

‎Ethan's hand brushed hers. "Then we don't let her win. Not this time. Not ever."

‎Ava's eyes hardened. "We fight. Together."

‎Outside, the rain began to fall again, soft at first, then heavier, like a drumbeat calling them toward a storm they were only beginning to see.

‎Cole Estate – Evening

‎Claudia sat at her desk, a glass of red wine untouched before her. The city lights reflected in the polished surface, a glittering kingdom she wanted to control.

‎Victoria appeared quietly, holding a tablet. "They're planning something," she said. "Ava and Ethan… together. And Liam."

‎Claudia's smile was slow, deliberate. "Let them. Let them think they are safe. Let them believe the truth is enough to protect them."

‎Victoria frowned. "But what if it isn't?"

‎Claudia's eyes were sharp, predatory. "Then we remind them… blood may not bind them, but power still belongs to me."

‎She leaned back, closing her eyes. The storm outside mirrored the one inside her restless, unyielding, and waiting.

‎And far away, in a small apartment, a mother, a father, and a child prepared for the first real challenge of their life together.

‎Because the seeds of shadows had already been planted.
