Christine smiled like a saint and said, "Darcy, I've been there before, so I understand your feelings; you don't have to explain yourself."
Darcy was completely speechless.

Darcy suppressed her emotions and lowered her head. "I understand, Old Mrs.
Yancey," she replied.
Darcy went along with Christine because she was afraid that she might mistake her for a two-faced woman. She did not want that as an outcome.
