Synopsis
In a world shattered by the rise of monstrous black towers and ruled by the Awakened—humans gifted with godlike power—fate no longer favors the powerless. When the sky cracked and death fell from above, cities burned and millions vanished in screams and smoke. Among the ruins, a single boy survived—not because he was strong, but because fate overlooked him. The Awakened called it destiny. He calls it betrayal. He has no title, no blessing, no mark. In a world obsessed with strength, he is forgotten—discarded like ash in the wind. Yet from his grief, something ancient begins to burn. Not a gift. Not a miracle. A fire. A vengeance. A reckoning. This is not the story of a hero chosen by fate. This is the rise of the Unmarked—and the world will remember what it tried to forget.

Chapter 1 - The Day the Towers Came

July 3, 2000 | Seoul, South Korea

The morning began like any other.

The sky stretched overhead in a flawless shade of blue, untouched by even the faintest cloud. Golden sunlight bathed the city, its warmth pouring over glass towers and crowded streets. Heat shimmered above the asphalt, distorting the reflections of passing cars into wavering mirages.

Seoul was already alive.

Car horns echoed through the avenues as buses rumbled past intersections. Vendors called out to passing customers, their voices blending with the steady rhythm of the city. From roadside food stalls drifted the irresistible aroma of sizzling pork belly, garlic, sesame oil, and sweet soy sauce. Steam curled into the air while cooks expertly flipped pancakes and tossed noodles over roaring flames.

Life continued as it always had.

Children raced through narrow alleyways, laughing as they splashed through puddles left behind after the morning cleaning. A little boy beat a dented cooking pot like a drum while leading an imaginary army into battle. Behind him, a girl stretched out her arms and pretended she was soaring through the sky like a bird.

On the rooftop of an aging apartment building, two teenagers leaned against a rusted railing, sharing a cigarette beneath the blazing summer sun.

One of them exhaled a cloud of smoke and sighed.

"Hot enough to fry your soul today."

His friend chuckled.

"No kidding."

Somewhere below, an old radio crackled with static before a cheerful pop song burst through its worn speakers.

It was summer in Seoul.

Busy.

Crowded.

Alive.

Just another ordinary day.

Until the sky changed.

---

At first, almost no one noticed.

It wasn't something people could see.

It was something they felt.

A strange pressure settled behind their eyes, like the beginning of a migraine. Others noticed an unnatural vibration beneath the city's familiar noise—a deep, low hum that seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere at once.

People frowned.

Then dismissed it.

Moments later...

The streetlights flickered despite the bright daylight.

Traffic lights glitched.

Bus radios dissolved into static.

Across the city, televisions abruptly lost their signal.

Inside a small apartment above a noodle shop, Mr. Kim frowned as his teacup trembled across the table without anyone touching it.

His television suddenly went black.

"What now...?"

He pressed the remote several times before tapping the side of the television in frustration.

The screen flickered back to life.

But something was wrong.

The news anchor's usual smile had vanished.

Her face was pale.

Her hands trembled as she gripped the desk.

"We are receiving unconfirmed reports of enormous black structures appearing simultaneously across major cities around the world."

She swallowed nervously before continuing.

"The first verified sighting has been confirmed here in Seoul. Authorities advise all citizens to remain indoors and stay away from windows until further notice."

For a brief moment, she listened to someone speaking through her earpiece.

When she looked back at the camera, fear filled her eyes.

"They're... not aircraft."

"They're not satellites."

"...And they didn't fall from the sky."

Mr. Kim slowly turned toward his window.

Far beyond the city skyline...

Something stood between the buildings.

A tower.

No...

Calling it a tower didn't feel right.

It pierced the heavens like a blade driven into the earth itself.

It was taller than Namsan Tower.

Taller than any skyscraper in Seoul.

Its surface was completely black.

Not painted black.

Not made of black stone.

It simply absorbed every ray of sunlight that touched it.

It cast no shadow.

It reflected no light.

It simply existed...

Like a tear carved into reality itself.

A chill ran down Mr. Kim's spine.

"What... is that...?"

---

On the western side of Seoul, Mrs. Park stood frozen inside her kitchen.

A porcelain plate slipped from her trembling hands and shattered against the sink.

A sharp piece sliced across her palm.

Blood slowly trickled between her fingers.

She didn't even notice.

Her eyes remained fixed on the television.

The live helicopter footage showed the same impossible structure towering over the city.

It was enormous.

Silent.

Motionless.

And deeply unsettling.

Her young son, Minho, looked up at her with wide eyes.

"Mom... your hand is bleeding."

Mrs. Park quickly forced a gentle smile despite the fear in her heart.

"It's alright, sweetheart."

"I just dropped the plate."

"I'm fine."

Minho hesitated.

"Are you sure?"

She nodded.

"Could you turn off the television for a little while?"

"I... don't want you watching this."

"Okay, Mom."

He picked up the remote and switched the television off.

Silence filled the apartment.

After a moment, Minho slowly peeked through the living room window.

"Mom..."

"Is it a spaceship?"

Mrs. Park walked beside him and stared at the towering black structure in the distance.

"I don't know."

"It looks like the scary stories you used to tell me."

"The ones with monsters..."

Before she could answer—

The apartment shook violently.

The floor rippled beneath their feet.

Books crashed from the shelves.

A flower vase shattered against the floor.

The lights flickered wildly.

"MOM!!"

Minho screamed.

Mrs. Park rushed forward without hesitation and pulled him tightly into her arms.

"It's okay."

"I'm here."

"Mommy's here."

Outside...

The black tower remained perfectly still.

Yet the sky surrounding it slowly began to darken.

As if something deep within it...

Had awakened.

The tremor spread across Seoul like a ripple through water.

For several heartbeats, the city fell into an uneasy silence.

Then...

Chaos erupted.

People poured into the streets, abandoning offices, restaurants, and apartment buildings. Car brakes screeched as drivers stopped in the middle of intersections. Some stepped out of their vehicles without even shutting off the engines, their eyes fixed on the impossible monument towering above the skyline.

Phones vibrated simultaneously.

Emergency alerts flooded every screen.

«EMERGENCY BROADCAST

Remain calm.

Seek shelter immediately.

Avoid approaching the unidentified black structure.

Further instructions will follow.»

No one remained calm.

"What was that earthquake?"

"I don't know!"

"It came out of nowhere!"

"Look at the sky!"

A father instinctively pulled his daughter into his arms.

"Dad... I'm scared."

He forced a reassuring smile, though his own hands were shaking.

"I know, sweetheart."

"I'm here."

"I won't let anything happen to you."

Nearby, an elderly woman slowly dropped to her knees, clasping her hands together in prayer.

Others followed.

Some cried openly.

Some stood frozen in disbelief.

Others simply ran without knowing where they were going.

Fear spread faster than any wildfire.

Above them...

The black structure remained completely motionless.

It had no doors.

No windows.

No markings.

Its surface appeared smooth one moment, then subtly shifted the next, as though reality itself refused to focus on it.

The longer people stared...

The more wrong it felt.

Not man-made.

Not natural.

Something else entirely.

---

Within hours, reports arrived from every corner of the globe.

Tokyo.

New York.

Paris.

London.

Moscow.

Beijing.

Manila.

Cairo.

Sydney.

São Paulo.

Every major nation reported the appearance of an identical black tower.

Different locations.

The same impossible structure.

News stations interrupted every scheduled program.

Governments declared national emergencies.

Military forces were mobilized across the world.

Social media became flooded with blurry photographs, panicked livestreams, and desperate questions.

No one had answers.

Only fear.

By noon, every major satellite pointed toward the towers.

None returned usable images.

Some transmitted nothing but static.

Others produced impossible distortions—as if the towers simply refused to be observed.

Scientists were baffled.

Engineers found no explanation.

Physicists argued with one another in disbelief.

The laws of nature no longer seemed reliable.

---

At exactly 1:00 PM...

A livestream from Berlin captured something no one expected.

The camera zoomed in on the tower from several kilometers away.

Millions watched online.

For nearly thirty seconds...

Nothing happened.

Then...

The surface rippled.

It was almost imperceptible.

Like a muscle twitching beneath skin.

The cameraman gasped.

"Did you see that...?"

"It moved."

The livestream instantly spread across the world.

Some dismissed it as a camera glitch.

Others believed something inside the tower had awakened.

No one could prove either theory.

An hour later...

A live news helicopter circled the tower above London.

The reporter struggled to steady her voice.

"We're maintaining a safe distance while authorities continue to monitor—"

She stopped.

The camera slowly tilted upward.

Behind the endless veil of darkness...

Something shifted.

Not outside the tower.

Inside it.

The silhouette vanished before anyone could understand what they had seen.

The broadcast ended moments later.

No explanation was ever given.

---

The world held its breath.

Emergency meetings began behind closed doors.

Military commanders abandoned ongoing operations and redirected their forces toward the towers.

Scientists from every nation gathered in hastily assembled research facilities.

The United Nations convened the largest emergency session in its history.

No country claimed responsibility.

No nation possessed an explanation.

Humanity faced the unknown together.

For the first time...

The entire world shared the same fear.

---

South Korea wasted no time.

A special military task force was assembled to investigate the Seoul Tower.

Every member volunteered.

Each wore experimental protective equipment designed to withstand unknown biological and chemical threats.

None of it mattered.

The entrance swallowed them without resistance.

The moment they crossed the threshold...

Communication became unstable.

"Control, this is Alpha Team."

"We've entered the structure."

"The interior... doesn't match the exterior dimensions."

Silence answered.

Static crackled through the radio.

Then the transmission returned.

"There are stairs..."

"They're... sideways."

"What the hell..."

The team advanced deeper.

Flashlights illuminated corridors that twisted in impossible directions.

Walls pulsed faintly beneath their fingertips.

Like living flesh.

One soldier stumbled backward.

"Did... did the wall just move?"

No one answered.

Several minutes later...

A scream echoed across every radio.

"It's watching us!"

Gunfire erupted.

The transmission dissolved into static.

Then...

Nothing.

---

The rescue team waited outside the entrance for hours.

As evening approached...

Two soldiers finally emerged.

The first staggered forward, covered in blood.

His left arm was gone.

The empty sleeve of his uniform hung limp against his body.

His eyes were vacant.

He didn't scream.

He didn't speak.

He simply kept walking until his legs gave out beneath him.

The second soldier stumbled behind him, desperately supporting his wounded comrade.

His entire body trembled uncontrollably.

When officers rushed to question him, he collapsed onto the pavement.

His lips quivered.

Over and over...

He whispered only four words.

"It was looking at us."

Then he fell silent.

Neither soldier would ever fully recover.

And neither could explain what they had witnessed inside the tower.

July 3, 2000 — 9:43 PM

Darkness settled over Seoul.

Yet the city never truly grew dark.

The towers glowed.

Not with light.

But with an eerie darkness that swallowed the moonlight around them, as though each one were a wound carved into the night sky.

The streets, once overflowing with life, had become almost unrecognizable.

Traffic had vanished.

Restaurants stood abandoned.

Storefronts were shuttered.

The only sounds that remained were the distant wail of emergency sirens and the constant drone of military helicopters circling overhead.

Searchlights swept across rooftops, never lingering on the towers for long.

Every time their beams touched the black surface...

The light simply disappeared.

As though it had been consumed.

Across the globe, laboratories worked without rest.

Scientists analyzed satellite data.

Military engineers reviewed footage frame by frame.

Biologists compared tissue samples collected from fragments near the tower's outer surface.

None of it made sense.

The material wasn't steel.

Nor was it stone.

It wasn't any known substance on Earth.

Microscopic analysis revealed something impossible.

Cells.

Living cells.

The towers...

Were alive.

Late that night, every television, radio station, and emergency broadcast network interrupted its programming.

The face of Dr. Hana Choi, South Korea's leading biophysicist, appeared on every screen.

She looked exhausted.

Dark circles hung beneath her eyes.

Her usually neat hair had come loose, and her trembling hands betrayed the fear she struggled to hide.

She took a slow breath before speaking.

"Over the past twelve hours, research teams from around the world have conducted every test currently available to modern science."

She paused.

"Our findings are... deeply concerning."

Silence filled the room behind her.

"The structures are not mechanical."

"They are not geological formations."

"And they are not artificial."

Her voice nearly faltered.

"They are alive."

Across the world, millions watched in stunned silence.

"We have confirmed the presence of living organic tissue throughout the structure."

"The towers respond to movement."

"They respond to proximity."

A long pause followed.

Then she uttered the words that would haunt humanity for years to come.

"...They may even respond to thought."

The room behind her fell completely silent.

Dr. Choi lowered her gaze.

"I believe these entities are dormant."

"...But they will not remain asleep forever."

The broadcast changed.

A new figure appeared.

General James Carter, Supreme Commander of the International Emergency Coalition.

Unlike Dr. Choi, his expression was unreadable.

His voice remained calm.

Too calm.

"This is not a military exercise."

"This is not a natural disaster."

"And this is not an enemy any nation has prepared to fight."

He looked directly into the camera.

"Until further notice, all governments are instructed to begin emergency evacuation procedures."

"Military personnel will assist civilians in relocating to designated shelters."

"Do not approach the towers."

"Do not attempt to enter them."

"Do not provoke them."

He paused.

His next sentence was spoken so quietly that many viewers leaned closer to hear it.

"If we act recklessly..."

"...Humanity itself may not survive."

The broadcast ended.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

For the first time in recorded history...

The entire world shared the same terrifying realization.

Tomorrow was no longer guaranteed.

July 5, 2000

Sector 9 Shelter District — Seoul

Two days had passed.

The blue summer sky had faded into a dull gray.

There were no birds.

No airplanes.

Only silence.

A silence so heavy it pressed against every heartbeat.

Government loudspeakers echoed through the empty streets.

"Attention, civilians. Please proceed calmly to your designated evacuation shelters."

"Remain orderly."

"Military personnel are here to assist you."

The words repeated endlessly.

Few believed them anymore.

Thousands of civilians formed long lines stretching through the streets.

Some carried suitcases.

Others carried nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Many simply carried each other.

Children cried.

Parents whispered comforting lies.

The elderly stared blankly toward the distant towers.

No one knew if they would ever return home.

Among those waiting...

A small boy quietly held his mother's hand.

His name was Rover.

He was only five years old.

Too young to understand why the adults around him looked so frightened.

Too young to understand why soldiers stood on every corner with loaded rifles.

His small red dinosaur backpack bounced gently against his back with every step.

In one hand, he tightly clutched a worn plastic robot with one missing leg.

It was his favorite toy.

His mother looked down at him and forced a smile.

Though the fear in her eyes never disappeared.

"Mama?"

Rover looked up at her innocently.

"Where are we going?"

She gently squeezed his little hand.

"Somewhere safe."

"We'll be okay."

Rover nodded.

He trusted her completely.

After all...

Mothers always kept their promises.

Or at least...

That's what he believed.

The line moved slowly.

Step by step.

No one complained anymore.

Fear had drained the strength from every voice.

Rover walked beside his mother, his tiny hand wrapped tightly around hers. His worn plastic robot dangled from the other, its missing leg swinging with every step.

The entrance to the underground shelter was finally in sight.

Rows of soldiers stood guard behind reinforced barricades, guiding civilians toward safety.

Armored trucks blocked every road leading into the district.

Searchlights swept across the skyline.

Everything looked organized.

Controlled.

Safe.

Or at least...

That was the illusion.

---

"Mama..."

Rover tugged gently on her sleeve.

"I'm thirsty."

His mother smiled softly despite the exhaustion written across her face.

"I know, sweetheart."

"We'll get you some water once we're inside."

"Can you wait just a little longer?"

He nodded.

"Okay."

Behind them, a man suddenly shoved his way through the crowd.

"My family is inside!"

"Move!"

Panic spread instantly.

People stumbled into one another.

Children began to cry.

Soldiers rushed forward to restore order.

"Everyone, stay calm!"

"There's enough room for everyone!"

"Please remain in line!"

No one listened.

Fear had already taken hold.

---

Then...

A sound.

It was faint.

Almost impossible to hear.

A long...

High-pitched whistle.

Rover tilted his head.

"Mama..."

"What's that?"

His mother looked up.

Her expression froze.

One of the soldiers standing atop an armored vehicle suddenly went pale.

His binoculars slipped from his hands.

He inhaled sharply.

Then screamed with every ounce of strength he had.

"INCOMING!"

"EVERYBODY DOWN!"

"TAKE COVER!"

For one heartbeat...

No one moved.

Then the sky exploded.

A deafening impact thundered across the city.

The ground lurched violently beneath their feet.

Windows shattered for blocks.

Cars were hurled aside like toys.

The blast wave slammed into the crowd, throwing hundreds of people off their feet.

Screams filled the air.

The orderly evacuation dissolved into chaos.

---

"Move!"

"Get to the shelters!"

"We'll cover you!"

Soldiers raised their rifles while desperately directing civilians toward the underground entrance.

Another soldier stared upward, his voice trembling.

"W-What... is that...?"

Everyone looked.

A shadow spread across the city.

It swallowed the sunlight.

The temperature dropped so suddenly that visible breaths drifted into the air.

Clouds twisted overhead.

Then...

It descended.

Two enormous wings tore through the gray sky.

Their span eclipsed entire buildings.

A colossal creature burst from the clouds like a nightmare made flesh.

Its scales shimmered like blackened steel.

Massive horns curled backward from its skull.

Golden eyes burned with unnatural intelligence.

Every beat of its wings sent hurricane-force winds crashing through the streets below.

The city trembled beneath its presence.

It opened its jaws.

And roared.

The sound wasn't merely heard.

It was felt.

It rattled windows.

Shook bones.

Stopped hearts.

It was the cry of a predator that had never known defeat.

Someone screamed.

"A DRAGON!"

"No..."

Another soldier whispered, unable to believe what stood before him.

"A... wyvern..."

---

"Fire!"

Gunfire erupted.

Hundreds of rounds streaked toward the creature.

The bullets struck its scales...

And ricocheted harmlessly away.

Not a single wound.

Not a single scratch.

The soldiers stared in disbelief.

The wyvern folded its wings.

Then vanished.

A sonic boom erupted across the street.

It had moved faster than the human eye could follow.

One soldier disappeared.

A heartbeat later...

His lifeless body crashed through the roof of a nearby bus.

The crowd erupted into absolute panic.

People scattered in every direction.

Some fell.

Others were trampled beneath desperate feet.

Parents screamed for their children.

Children cried for parents who could no longer answer.

The city had become hell.

---

The wyvern struck again.

Its massive tail swept across the boulevard.

Concrete shattered.

Cars flipped into the air.

A young mother threw herself over her daughter.

The impact hurled both of them into a wall.

Neither moved again.

Rover stood frozen.

His legs refused to obey him.

His mother grabbed his shoulders.

"Rover!"

"Listen to me!"

"You have to run!"

He looked at her, tears streaming down his face.

"I... I can't..."

Another roar echoed overhead.

The wyvern descended.

Its shadow swallowed them whole.

His mother's eyes widened.

Without hesitation...

She shoved Rover away with all her strength.

"RUN!"

The creature's tail crashed into the street.

The explosion of force sent Rover tumbling across the pavement.

His toy robot slipped from his hand and skidded into the rubble.

"Mama!"

He reached toward her.

Their fingertips almost touched.

Then—

She was gone.

Thrown violently into a collapsed concrete wall.

The world became silent.

Rover stared.

Unable to breathe.

Unable to move.

His mother's hand hung motionless beneath the shattered debris.

"...Mama?"

No answer.

Only smoke.

Only fire.

Only screams.

---

The wyvern slowly turned its head.

Its glowing golden eyes settled upon the small boy standing alone.

Rover's entire body trembled.

He wanted to run.

He wanted to scream.

But fear had stolen every ounce of strength from him.

The creature took one step forward.

The ground cracked beneath its claws.

Then another.

Each step sounded like thunder.

Rover looked up through tear-filled eyes.

His lips trembled.

"...A wyvern..."

He remembered the picture book his mother used to read before bedtime.

The brave knights.

The castles.

The dragons.

He had always laughed.

He had always believed monsters belonged inside stories.

A broken smile crossed his trembling lips.

"...Just like the one in my book..."

Another tear rolled down his cheek.

"...But this one..."

"...is real."

The wyvern opened its jaws.

Darkness filled the sky.

And somewhere in the distance...

A soldier raised his rifle and charged forward.

"GET AWAY FROM THE BOY!"

His desperate cry echoed across the ruined city.

The wyvern turned.

Its golden eyes narrowed.

The battle...

Had only just begun.

To be continue...
