A collective gasp resounded from the mouths of all those present. Openly going back on an agreed promise was akin to ostracizing oneself in high society.
Daniel glared at the Count viciously, "What nonsense are you spouting?"
The Count's voice grew to a higher pitch, "Am I wrong? How else can this situation make sense?"
In this hopeless moment, the Count became desperate. He tried to defame Axel Nomrad and turn the situation to his favor. Since most of those present here were allied with the Duchess, they would also chime in to his acclamations, just for the sake of it.
As they also wore smiles, the narrative of this entire thing could be changed if all of them wished to; no matter what the truth was, there was no one to help the Nomrad family. This was the true power of the High Society—consequently, the actual influence of the Duchess.
