Chapter 444: Oreburgh Gate
~Third POV~
[Sinnoh Region, Later, Route 203 – Oreburgh Gate]
The trek through the remainder of Route 203 was marked by a new sense of urgency. The encounter with the Luxio pack had served as a wake-up call for Diamond and Pearl. Even the usually stoic Platinum seemed more observant, her eyes constantly scanning the ridgelines for movement.
Azure, however, remained the eye of the storm. As they approached the entrance to the Oreburgh Gate, the rocky cavern that cut through the mountain, he called for one last break. Azure stated, leaning against a jagged rock, "We enter the cave in ten minutes. Caves are different. Lighting is poor, echoes can confuse your Pokémon's hearing, and the terrain is uneven. Pearl, how's the new recruit?"
Pearl was currently sitting on a flat stone, trying to offer a piece of high-quality Pokémon food to the Luxio. The feline Pokémon sat several feet away, staring at the food with suspicion.
Pearl admitted resolutely, wiping sweat from his brow as he already named him, "Rayler... stubborn. He won't eat from my hand yet. But he's stopped growling every time I move my legs, so that's progress, right?"
Azure nodded his head in understanding as he said calmly, "It's a start. He respects power. You haven't shown him yours yet. To him, you're just the loud guy who hangs out with the guy who beat him."
Pearl stood up, his face determined as he declared, "Then I'll just have to show him. Chimlar! Let's do some shadow boxing!"
As Pearl and his Chimchar began a frantic series of punches and kicks, Diamond sat next to Azure, offering him a slice of apple as he asked bluntly, "You're really good at this. The training, the battling... the scary aura thing. Where did you learn to do that? I've never seen a trainer do that."
Azure took the apple, his gaze shifting toward the distant peak of Mt. Coronet, shrouded in clouds, as he replied, "I've been to places where 'luck' isn't enough, Dia. When you're standing in front of a Pokémon that can level a city, you either project strength or you get crushed. It's not a skill you learn in a book."
Diamond asked bluntly around a mouthful of food, "Is that why you're helping the Lady? Because you don't want her to get crushed?"
Azure looked at the boy. Diamond was often dismissed as the 'slow' one, but his intuition was frighteningly sharp. Azure said quietly, "The Berlitz family has a tradition. But the world is changing. The things waking up in this region... a simple tradition could easily turn into a tragedy. I'm here to make sure the story ends the way it's supposed to."
Diamond asked hopefully, "With a happy ending?"
Azure smiled as he replied, "With a happy ending."
He stood up, dusting off his pants as he continued, "Check your gear. We're moving. Absol takes the lead."
*Pop*
Hurling a Poke Ball, Absol materialized. With a soft, almost imperceptible nod, Azure's Absol, a majestic creature with a crescent blade-like horn, stepped forward. Its pristine white fur glowed faintly in the fading daylight.
Absol's crimson eyes, usually serene, narrowed slightly as it scanned the cave entrance, sensing the subtle shifts in air currents, the faint echoes of unseen life. It was a Pokémon trained not just for battle, but for vigilance, a living alarm system.
They entered the cool, damp air of the Oreburgh Gate; the sound of their footsteps echoed against the limestone walls. Pikachu chirped, leaping from Azure's shoulder to a comfortable spot on Absol's back, "Pika-chu! (Hold up. Let me help.)"
*FLASH*
A blinding flash of light erupted from Pikachu's cheeks, not a combat move, but a well-practiced Flash. The sudden illumination pushed back the encroaching shadows of the cave, revealing rough-hewn walls, glistening moisture, and the faint outlines of stalactites hanging like teeth from the ceiling.
Diamond exclaimed, shielding his eyes, "Whoa! That's bright, Pikachu!"
Platinum observed, her hand gracefully shading her eyes, "Efficient, too. No need for a flashlight with a Pokémon like Pikachu on hand."
Azure stated, his voice a low rumble as he observed, "It's about conserving resources and being ready for anything. Pikachu's Flash is potent enough to disorient, if needed, but primarily serves as an excellent light source in these situations."
The group stepped into the cooler, damper air of the cave. Absol led the way, its strides silent and deliberate, Pikachu's light bouncing off the uneven surfaces. Eevee, now nestled closer to Azure's neck, let out a soft cry as a drop of water splashed near its nose.
Pichu, still hidden, simply shifted, a tiny warmth against Azure's chest.
Pearl mused, trying to strike up a conversation with Rayler, "So, Oreburgh Gate, huh? They say it's just a shortcut, but sometimes you find interesting things here. Right, Rayler?"
Rayler, however, merely kept its distance from Pearl, its gaze fixed ahead, occasionally flicking its tail in what seemed like irritation. It was still smarting from the humiliation of being caught and the subsequent force Azure had exerted against it.
The memory of Azure's piercing gaze and the oppressive aura that had slammed into it was still fresh. It had been like being crushed by an invisible weight, a primal fear it hadn't experienced even with its old pack leader.
It resented the trainer, the one with the odd eyes and the too-calm demeanor, who had made it submit. Diamond said, offering a reassuring pat on his friend's shoulder, "Don't worry, Pearl. Rayler will come around. All Pokémon do, eventually."
Pearl retorted, a hint of frustration in his voice, "That's easy for you to say, Dia. Lax has been with you forever, and Tru practically walked into your arms."
Platinum interjected gently, adding some advice, "Every bond is unique, Pearl. Some take more effort, some are instantaneous. But effort, truly given, is never wasted."
Azure listened, his expression unreadable. He had seen countless trainers struggle with their Pokémon, and he knew that sometimes, a breakthrough required a crucible. This journey would provide ample opportunities.
He simply observed Pearl's earnest attempts, the genuine desire to connect. It was a good sign.
As they delved deeper, the air grew heavier, the silence more profound, broken only by their footsteps, the soft drip of water, and Pearl's continued, often one-sided, dialogue with Rayler, "Look, I know you're strong. I saw you back there. You're not like them, are you? You're an outcast, just like you were with your old pack. But here, with me, you won't be an outcast. We'll be strong together!"
Rayler let out a low snarl, but it wasn't directed at Pearl. Its ears twitched, muscles tensing. Absol, who had been moving with graceful precision, suddenly stopped dead.
A guttural growl rumbled deep in its chest, its crimson eyes narrowing to slits, fixed on a point further down the tunnel, just beyond the reach of Pikachu's Flash, "Grrr... (Halt. We have trouble…)"
Azure's eyes, usually calm, sharpened as he stated, "Absol senses something. Pikachu, broaden the beam."
Pikachu amplified its Flash, pushing back the shadows with a surge of energy, "Pika-chuuuuu! (On it partner!)"
*Flash*
The beam stretched further, revealing a cavern much larger than the tunnel they had been traversing. And in the center of that cavern, suspended from the ceiling by leathery wings, was a colossal Golbat.
*Fwp*
Its fangs glinted menacingly, and its eyes, glowing an eerie red, fixed on their group. This was no ordinary Golbat. Its sheer size and the intensity of its aura marked it clearly as an Alpha Pokémon.
Platinum breathed, a hint of awe and apprehension in her voice, "An Alpha Golbat! They're known for their fierce territoriality."
Azure added calmly, his voice devoid of fear, "And their strength. Boys, Platinum. This is your chance. We've got new Dex Holders and an heirloom journey to complete. Time to see what you've learned. Diamond, Pearl. This one's yours."
Diamond's eyes widened, a Poffin halfway to his mouth. He pointed at the Golbat and them asking, "Us? Against that thing?"
Pearl, however, straightened, a spark igniting in his eyes as he declared with imaginary fiery eyes, "Finally! A real challenge!"
He turned to Rayler, yelling, "Rayler! This is it! This is our chance to show them!"
Rayler merely stiffened, a low growl emanating from its throat, but it still hesitated. The Alpha Golbat shrieked, a high-pitched sound that reverberated through the cave, sending tremors through the ground, "Screeeech!"
*Woooosh*
It swooped, a blur of purple and blue, its massive maw opening wider, preparing for an attack. Pearl yelled, his voice cracking with urgency, "Rayler, now! Are you going to let it get away with that? Are you going to let this Alpha push us around, just like Azure pushed you, just like your old pack pushed you out?! You hate being ordered around, don't you? You hate being an outcast! So use that! Use that hate, that anger, to get stronger! Do it with me! We'll show them! We'll show Azure, we'll show your old pack, we'll show this Golbat that this outcast will outshine them all!"
Something in Pearl's impassioned plea, the raw emotion in his voice, struck a chord in Rayler. The Luxio's eyes, previously filled with defiance and resentment, suddenly blazed with a fierce, almost desperate, understanding.
It recognized the shared fire, the burning desire to prove itself. Pearl wasn't just ordering it; he was pleading with it, challenging it, connecting with it on a level Azure couldn't have, not as an equal.
Rayler let out a sudden, powerful roar, a sound that echoed the Alpha Golbat's shriek, accepting the challenge, "RROOARR!"
*ZZZZZT*
Its fur bristled, and blue electricity crackled around its body. Pearl cheered, a wide grin spreading across his face, "That's it, Rayler! Okay, Diamond, let's show them what we've got! You take the left, I'll take the right!"
Diamond, now energized, called out, "You got it, Pearl! Lax, Tru! Let's go!"
Munchlax lumbered forward, surprisingly swift for its size, "Lax! Munch! (On it! Anything for Blissy's cooking!)"
Tru, the Turtwig, scampered along beside it, cried out, "Turt! (For food!)"
Pearl commanded, "Chatler, Chimlar! Go!"
His Chatot, Chatler, flew into the air, while Chimlar, his Chimchar, sprang forward with incredible agility. The Alpha Golbat dive-bombed, "Screeech!"
*Zooom*
Diamond yelled, "Lax, use Headbutt!"
*THWACK*
Lax, with a surprising burst of speed, slammed its massive head into the Golbat's wing, trying to deflect its dive. The Golbat shrieked in pain but didn't falter.
Dia followed up, "Tru, Razor Leaf!"
Tru spun, launching a volley of sharp leaves.
*FWOOSH*
*FWOOSH*
*FWOOSH*
The leaves sliced through the air, scoring hits on the Golbat's leathery wings and body. Pearl aimed, "Chatler, Chatter! Confuse it!"
Chatler let out a cacophony of jarring, confusing sounds, the noise amplified by the cave's acoustics, "CHAAAAATTTTTTTT!"
The Alpha Golbat faltered, shaking its head, momentarily disoriented. Peral followed up, "Now, Chimlar, Ember!"
*Sssss*
Chimchar unleashed a small but potent fireball.
*Boom*
It struck the Golbat's body, charring its fur. The Alpha Golbat, enraged, recovered quickly. It let out another deafening shriek and used a supersonic, high-frequency wave that assailed the young Pokémon, "SSSHHHHRRIIIIEEEEEEEE!"
Lax stumbled, Tru fell to its knees, and Chatler flew erratically. Chimlar clutched its head in pain. Pearl yelled, gritting his teeth, "Snap out of it, guys! Rayler, use Spark!"
*ZAP*
With a newfound zeal, Rayler lunged. Its body crackled with intense blue electricity. It slammed into the Golbat's flank, arcs of lightning dancing between them. The Golbat cried out, its body convulsing, "SCREEE!!!"
Pearl cheered, pride swelling in his chest, "Nice one, Rayler! Keep it up! Diamond, Tru! Tackle from below while it's stunned!"
Tru recovered, rushing in with surprising speed, slamming into the Golbat's underside, "Tru! (On it!)"
*THUD*
Diamond commanded, his voice gaining confidence, "Lax, Body Slam!"
*BANG*
Lax, seizing the opportunity, performed a surprisingly athletic leap, dropping its massive weight onto the struggling Golbat. The Alpha Golbat let out a pained shriek as it was driven into the cavern floor.
Pearl seized the moment as he commanded, "Rayler, Charge Beam! Power it up!"
*ZZZZZZZT*
Rayler, sensing the impending victory, focused its electrical energy, gathering it into a potent blast. Pearl barked, "Chimlar, finish it with Flame Wheel!"
*Sssss*
Chimchar enveloped itself in flames, becoming a blazing wheel of fire. And then both attacks landed their mark…
*KABOOM*
The Alpha Golbat, still recovering from the Body Slam, was hit simultaneously by Rayler's Charge Beam and Chimlar's Flame Wheel. A brilliant flash of light and a burst of heat filled the cavern…
*Thud*
The Golbat shrieked one last, agonizing cry before collapsing onto the ground, unconscious. Pearl yelled, pumping his fist into the air, "We did it!"
Rayler let out a triumphant bark, its tail wagging tentatively for the first time. It looked at Pearl, a new understanding in its eyes, a flicker of loyalty replacing the defiance.
Diamond rushed over, his own Pokémon celebrating happily, "That was amazing, Pearl! Rayler was incredible!"
Platinum, who had watched the entire battle with keen interest, clapped elegantly as she praised them, "A truly impressive display, both of your Pokémon's strength and your growing synergy as trainers. And Rayler... you showed immense courage."
Azure simply nodded, a genuine smile gracing his lips as he praised them. "Well done, boys. That's a strong Alpha for your first real challenge."
He looked at Rayler, who met his gaze, no longer with fear, but a nascent respect. Azure gave a slow, approving nod as he stated, "You've got a lot of fight in you, Rayler. And Pearl, you'll be a formidable trainer."
As the young trainers basked in their victory, Absol remained in its defensive stance. Its growl, however, became deeper, more urgent, its crimson eyes widening slightly as it stared into the darkness beyond the defeated Golbat.
Platinum said, her voice soft but sincere, "Well done."
She walked over and gently patted Diamond's Tru on the head, adding, "Your coordination was... acceptable. Superior, even."
Pearl squawked, his usual bravado returning as he boasted, "Acceptable? That was incredible! We're a natural team! Did you see that spark? It was like—"
Azure's voice cut through the celebration like a knife, "Quiet."
Absol wasn't relaxing. In fact, she was backing up, her claws digging into the dirt. Azure's Pikachu hopped off his shoulder, his cheeks crackling violently.
Azure said calmly, his eyes narrowing as he looked deeper into the tunnel, "The Alpha was the warning. Not the threat."
From the darkness beyond the light of the Flash, a sound began to build. It wasn't the screech of one bat. It was the sound of a thousand wings.
*FWP*
*FWP*
*FWP*
It sounded like a rushing river. Then, emerging from the blackness was something far more terrifying than a single Golbat.
An Alpha Crobat, its four wings moving with such speed they were a blur, led a literal wall of Zubat and Golbat. The sheer number of them created a wind tunnel that threatened to blow the group off its feet.
The Alpha Crobat shrieked—a high-pitched, ultrasonic wave that made Diamond and Pearl clutch their ears in agony, "SCREEE!! (You dare enter my garden! You are courting death mongrels!!)"
Pearl yelled over the roar, "There are too many! Rayler's tired! We can't—"
Azure stepped forward. He moved past Pearl, past Diamond, and stood firmly in front of the group. The wind whipped his hair, and his jacket fluttered, revealing the tiny Pichu (Mew) who was now watching with wide, glowing blue eyes.
Azure said calmly, his voice carrying clearly despite the deafening noise, "You did your part. Now, watch how I clear a path."
He didn't reach for a Poké Ball. He simply looked at the Pikachu standing at his feet. Azure said, his voice dropping an octave, "Pikachu. Let's not waste time. Pika Papow."
*ZZZZT*
The Pikachu didn't just glow; he ignited. A massive aura of pure, golden friendship and electric power enveloped him. The energy was so dense it felt like the air itself was turning into honey.
*SHIIII*
The golden light expanded, taking the shape of a giant, smiling Pikachu head made of pure electricity. It filled the entire width of the Oreburgh Gate. The blast was blinding as it unleashed pure destruction…
"BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!"
A wave of golden energy surged forward. It didn't just hit the bats; it disintegrated their resolve and sent them flying backward in a harmless but overwhelming tide of light. The Alpha Crobat, the leader of the swarm, was caught in the center.
It didn't even have time to shriek before it was blasted back into the deep recesses of the cave, its entire "gang" scattered like leaves in a hurricane. The silence that followed was absolute.
The dust settled. The golden light faded, leaving only the soft glow of Pikachu's cheeks. Not a single wild Pokémon remained in sight…
… The tunnel was clear.
Azure turned around, adjusting his jacket. The Pichu (Mew) inside let out a tiny, satisfied mew—well, it sounded like a pichu-pi if you weren't listening closely.
Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum stood frozen. Pearl's mouth was hanging open. Diamond had forgotten to finish his rice ball; it sat forgotten in his hand. Even Platinum, the ever-composed noble, was staring at the scorched marks on the cave floor where the energy had passed.
Diamond whispered, utterly bewildered, "He just... erased them."
Pearl added, his voice barely a breath, "With a single move... And he's acting like it was nothing."
Platinum whispered in a tone of disbelief, her scholar's mind racing to find a record of it, "That... what move was that? It wasn't Thunderbolt. It wasn't Discharge. The energy signature was... emotional?"
Azure casually whistled, signaling Absol to continue forward as he casually said, "It's a specialty of ours. Power of friendship, literally. It's a bit flashy for my taste, but it gets the job done without hurting them too badly."
Gesturing to the charred Bat Pokémon lying on the ground. The Trio blinked, surprised as they matched the darkness of the cave, just barely alive.
He started walking toward the light at the end of the tunnel—the exit to Oreburgh City. Pearl shouted, running to catch up, "Wait! You can't just do that and then walk away! Teach me how to do that! If Rayler and I can do that, we'd be unstoppable!"
Azure chuckled, a rare, genuine sound as he explained, "First, learn how to get your Luxio to sit without biting you, Pearl. Then we'll talk about the 'unstoppable' stuff."
Peral argued back defiantly, "Hey! He didn't bite me once during that fight!"
Diamond chimed in, finally taking a bite of his rice ball as they walked, "He thought about it. I saw his ears twitch. That's the 'I want to bite you' twitch."
Peral roared back, "Shut up, Dia!"
Platinum followed them, her eyes lingering on Azure's back. She felt a strange mix of security and intimidation. Her father had hired a bodyguard, yes, but he had hired a force of nature as he continued forward.
Platinum, though still visibly shaken, managed to compose herself. She looked at Azure's retreating figure, a new depth of understanding dawning in her eyes as she thought, 'I've heard Champions being the strongest in a region. They're the pillars of the region's strength… And the Uncrowned Champion is supposedly the strongest, effortlessly defeating Champions…'
A lot was going through her head, but she finally said, her voice regaining its usual steadiness, though a tremor lingered beneath the surface, "Come on. We must keep moving. We are on a journey, after all."
Diamond and Pearl, still reeling from the impossible display, merely exchanged wide-eyed glances. They had just witnessed a glimpse of Azure's true strength, a power that made their own recent victory feel like a mere parlor trick.
Moving silently, they processed the impossible; they followed their enigmatic bodyguard, pondering how strong Azure truly was. He was their protector, far more formidable than they could have imagined.
