Chapter 23 - SWEET BEGINNING

Aaron and Sarah's Sweet Beginning

First dates can be a curious blend of excitement, nerves, and hopeful expectation, but when Aaron took Sarah out on their very first date, it unfolded like a gentle scene from a romantic film.

And of course, being the beautifully transparent soul she is, Sarah couldn't wait to share every dreamy detail with me.

From the moment she walked in, cheeks flushed with excitement, I knew something magical had happened.

She didn't even take her coat off before she started talking.

"He remembered my favorite flowers," she said, her voice soft and full of awe, holding up a delicate bouquet of tulips.

No one had ever paid attention to details like that before.

Her eyes sparkled with the memory.

That small, thoughtful gesture tucked quietly into the very beginning of the evening already said so much about Aaron's points for punctuality, double points for intention.

Aaron had mapped out an effortlessly perfect date: a balance of warmth, fun, and a sprinkle of whimsy.

Their first stop was a hidden gem of a café nestled in the heart of the city.

Vintage charm hung in the air, accompanied by the soft glow of string lights, the hum of acoustic music, and the scent of roasted coffee beans that enveloped the room like a cozy blanket.

Over coffee and pastries, the world seemed to slow down for them.

There were no awkward silences to fill. No careful editing of thoughts. Just flow.

"It felt easy," Sarah said, her voice dreamy. And ease had never come naturally to her.

"Like we skipped the awkward part and just... clicked."

But Aaron wasn't done surprising her. After they left the café, he took her to a nearby park, where an outdoor movie screening was already in full swing.

A classic romantic comedy flickered across a white screen stretched between two tall oaks.

They found a spot beneath the stars and spread out a blanket.

"He gave me his jacket when I got cold," she added, her fingers absently brushing the fabric she still hadn't returned.

"Like it was the most natural thing in the world."

They laughed through the movie, their shoulders brushing occasionally, the soft glow of the lanterns lining the park path making everything feel more intimate, almost unreal.

And when the credits rolled, instead of calling it a night, Aaron led her on a slow walk along the park's lantern-lit trail.

"That was my favorite part," Sarah confessed. "Just walking, talking about the future. No pressure. Just... being."

She's always been a future-dreamer. The fact that he "talked" about one with her mattered more than she let on.

There was something sacred about the simplicity of it all.

No grand gestures. No staged photos.

Just moments carefully chosen and thoughtfully strung together by a boy who wanted her to feel seen.

And she did.

She recounted the evening thoughtfully, the doors, the remembered details, the laughter, and I realized she wasn't just impressed. She was moved.

I couldn't help but tease her about the way she kept smiling every few sentences.

But deep down, I was "simply" overjoyed for her.

It's rare to find someone who pays attention, who shows up, not just in person, but in effort.

And Aaron did just that. He didn't just take her on a date, He curated a memory.

If this is the beginning of their story, then it's off to a beautiful start.

And as her best friend, I'll be right here for all of it, cheering them on, offering unsolicited advice, and, of course, teasing Saraph every chance I get.

Because if this first chapter is any sign, their love story might just be one worth remembering.

 When Aaron Met Nuella

A week after the dreamy first date, Saraph invited me out for lunch at our favorite spot.

I knew something was up the moment she texted.

"Dress cute but casual 👀" followed by a hundred heart emojis.

I arrived first, sliding into our usual booth by the window.

Ten minutes later, Saraph walked in glowing, practically floating, and right beside her was he.

Aaron.

He looked the same as he always did around campus, neat, composed, carrying himself with that quiet steadiness I'd noticed before.

I stood, arms crossed playfully, watching them approach.

Saraph grinned, "Nuella, Aaron!"

Aaron waved: "Hey! Good to see you again. Saraph's mentioned you plenty."

I smirked: "Yeah, I've heard a lot about you, too, apparently all the good stuff, right?"

Aaron laughed: "Mostly. She leaves out a few embarrassing details."

Saraph rolled her eyes: "You're only making it worse!"

I tilted my head: "Like what? Should I be worried?"

Aaron shrugged, smiling: "Just the usual, she talks a lot when she's excited. You'll see."

Saraph nudged him: "Hey!"

I laughed: "Oh, I've definitely noticed that. She hasn't changed a bit."

Aaron leaned back in his chair, relaxed: "Well, you're not so bad yourself. I've caught glimpses of your campus antics."

I raised an eyebrow: "Oh, really? Now I'm curious."

Saraph jumped in: "She's mostly exaggerating, but some of it's true!"

I smirked at Aaron: "Guess you've got to survive the Saraph stories, huh?"

Aaron chuckled: "Looks like it. But somehow, I don't mind."

I thought to myself: He's easy to talk to. Calm. Not trying too hard. That's… nice.

Saraph reached over, looping her arm through his: "See? I told you, Nuella, he's a keeper."

I shook my head playfully: "We'll see. Campus life is full of surprises."

Aaron smiled at both of us: "I'll take my chances." "Only the best, I've been warned you're fiercely loyal and not afraid to ask tough questions."

Smart man. He came prepared.

He looked genuinely comfortable beside her.

I had seen Saraph with other guys before, the kind who mistook her gentleness for something small.

The kind who dimmed her without realizing it.

But with Aaron, she sat tall. She laughed freely. Her shoulders weren't tight. She wasn't editing herself.

That mattered.

Still… I needed to know more.

I leaned back slightly, stirring my iced tea, watching him carefully.

"So," I said lightly, "what are you actually looking for?"

No teasing. No smile.

Just clarity.

Aaron didn't hesitate. He didn't glance at Saraph for help either.

"Something steady," he said. "Not loud. Not rushed. Just… intentional."

Saraph's fingers tightened slightly around his hand under the table.

I noticed.

I watched him carefully. "And you think you can handle her kind of heart?"

He smiled, "not defensive", not cocky. Just sure.

"I don't want to handle it," he said. "I want to protect it."

That answer landed.

Not dramatic. Not rehearsed. Just calm truth.

"And what does lasting mean to you?" I pressed gently.

He exhaled, thoughtful rather than defensive.

"It means choosing someone consistently.

Even when it's inconvenient. Even when it's hard. Not just when it's exciting."

Okay.

That was better than good.

I leaned back, folding my arms. "You know she's not low maintenance, right?

"She's ambitious. Emotional. Sensitive in ways she pretends she's not. Can you handle that?"

His expression softened.

"I know," he replied quietly. "That's why I'm here."

"I don't want to 'handle' her," he said. "I want to understand her."

Saraph went quiet at that.

And so did I.

No grand promises. No exaggerated claims.

Just presence.

We shifted into easier conversation after that: future plans, work goals, what stability meant to each of us.

He didn't dominate the space.

He made room. He asked Saraph what she thought before giving his own opinion.

He listened when she spoke.

And when she laughed, he watched her like it was something worth memorizing.

That's when I knew he was different.

As we stepped outside and the late afternoon sun brushed against the pavement, Aaron turned to me.

"Thank you," he said sincerely. "I know she trusts your judgment.

That means something to me."

I held his gaze for a second longer than necessary.

"Just don't make me regret trusting you back," I replied.

He nodded once. Not defensive. Not cocky.

Certain.

Saraph looped her arm through his as they walked away, glancing back at me with that soft, grateful smile.

I gave her a small nod.

Watching them disappear down the street, I felt something settle inside me.

Not every day does your best friend find someone who doesn't just admire her…

but respects her.

And somehow, I knew, this wasn't just a sweet beginning.

It was something steady.
