Chapter 234 - Chapter 234: Alice in Wonderland (7)

[Third Person Pov]

Tetch laughed heartily, the unhinged sound echoing throughout the entire garden like a twisted melody. "HaHaHAhA! I expect no less from the apprentices of the World's greatest detective! I don't know how you were able to figure it out so quickly, but congratulations!"

He hopped down from his seat with theatrical energy and strolled over to the eerie, life-sized husk of Alice inside the ornate doll box. His eyes gleamed with obsessive adoration as he gazed upon his creation.

"You see, I have spent a good portion of my life searching for my ideal version of Alice," he explained, his voice dripping with dramatic flair. "Many came close… so, so very close." He let out a deep, regretful sigh while gently stroking the side of the box. "But none could ever truly amount to the perfect Alice that lives in my heart. For the longest time, I had to settle for mediocrity."

Robin and Danny clenched their jaws so tightly it looked painful. Veins protruded prominently from Danny's temple and neck as he trembled with barely contained fury, his entire body shaking against the invisible restraints holding him in place.

"I thought I would never get the chance to find her," Tetch continued, turning toward his two hulking henchmen with genuine gratitude shining in his eyes. "Until I met Twiddle-Dee and Twiddle-Dum. They showed me that I had been approaching this all wrong. I shouldn't have to settle for less. We should strive for perfection — who cares if the entire world thinks of us as mad in the process?"

He spread his arms wide in a grand, theatrical gesture. "If I couldn't find the Alice of my dreams… then I would simply have to *create* her and bring her into reality!" Tetch exclaimed passionately while hugging the doll box tightly. "By carefully selecting only the best pieces — those beautiful blue eyes, that silky blonde hair, her perfect button nose, those soft pink lips, dainty hands, and flawless porcelain skin — and discarding everything else that made them mediocre. She could finally be born… my beautiful, perfect Alice."

The three captives listened in growing horror as the Mad Hatter's words painted a grotesque picture. Robin and Danny's expressions were twisted with rage, while Ember looked increasingly sickened.

"However, she was still missing something," Tetch said, slowly backing away from the box with a wistful look. "Something to make her truly come alive… She was missing a soul… and a voice of silk that could make her sing."

He turned his gaze directly toward Ember. A violent shiver ran down her spine as she tensed reflexively in her seat. All three of them felt a deep, sickening sense of revulsion that churned their stomachs the more the Mad Hatter spoke.

"When I heard your voice and learned what you truly were, it felt like divine intervention," he declared, clasping his hands together in reverence. "The same higher power that guided me to become the living incarnation of the Mad Hatter has now presented you to me, so that my dreams may finally come true."

"So fight it as much as you want, my dear," Tetch said softly, approaching Ember with slow, deliberate steps. "But this is inevitable. Just as I was meant to be the Mad Hatter… you were destined to be my pretty Alice."

He gently took her hand and pressed a lingering, theatrical kiss to the back of it, bowing low like a gentleman from another era.

Inside, Danny was seething with a level of rage unlike anything he had ever felt before. Pure fury burned through his veins, threatening to overwhelm him completely. But he forced himself to take a deep, calming breath, drawing on the mental techniques Batman had taught him during their training sessions.

He knew that if he wanted to genuinely break free of this illusion's hold, raw rage and anger wouldn't be enough. What he needed was focus and unbreakable determination.

Danny closed his eyes, shutting out everything around him — the mocking laughter, the clinking of teacups, the scent of flowers, even the taste of bile in his throat. He blocked out his sight, his hearing, and every other distraction until the outside world faded into nothingness.

All of his attention narrowed down to a single point: his ghost core. It pulsed powerfully at the center of his being, brimming with raw ectoplasmic energy and untapped strength.

Even then, he could still feel the lingering grip of the illusion weighing him down, heavy and oppressive, like being trapped in the worst kind of sleep paralysis nightmare. But he refused to let it win.

Using nothing but his own sheer willpower, Danny pushed through the oppressive hold of the illusion. It felt like shattering heavy chains that had been binding his very soul, preventing him from reaching the blazing power of his ghost core. With a final, determined mental surge, he seized hold of it.

The moment he connected, raw energy came rushing back through him in a relentless, pulsing wave. Ectoplasmic power flooded his body, igniting every nerve and filling him with overwhelming strength.

Robin looked over at Danny in wide-eyed surprise — and he wasn't the only one. Every eye in the garden turned toward him. Spectral green flames erupted from Danny's form, flickering wildly around him. His snow-white hair defied gravity, floating upward as though caught in an invisible current. The sheer volume of energy pouring out of him was so intense that glowing fractures began spider-webbing across his skin, like cracks forming in glowing glass.

A heavy, ominous wind suddenly swept through the entire garden, howling between the tables and rustling the singing flowers. It sent a deep shiver racing down everyone's spine, making party guests and henchmen alike tremble uncontrollably.

"Danny?" Robin called out, unable to hide the sharp edge of concern in his voice.

When Danny finally opened his eyes, they were no longer human. They glowed with pure, blazing emerald green — no pupils, no irises, just two radiant orbs of unrestrained power.

His teeth ground together so hard the sound was audible over the wind.

Then he opened his mouth.

An explosion of sound erupted straight from his throat — the full force of his ghostly wail. The sonic blast was loud, ominous, and devastatingly powerful all at once. It slammed into the Mad Hatter like a freight train, lifting Jervis Tetch clear off the ground and hurling him backward across the garden. He crashed violently into an invisible barrier with bone-jarring force.

"AHHHHHHHHHH!!" Jervis screamed in pure agony as the relentless wave of sound tore through him. Blood poured from his nose, ears, and eyes. The sonic energy ripped at his skin, flaying and battering his body as if trying to shake him apart from the inside out.

When Danny finally cut off the wail, Tetch collapsed in a broken heap onto the ground. He twitched violently, a growing pool of blood spreading beneath him on the once-pristine grass.

Danny drew in a deep, ragged breath, tilted his head toward the illusory ceiling, and unleashed another devastating beam of sound. The garden began to shake and tremble violently. Cracks spider-webbed through the very fabric of reality around them. The illusion started shattering like fragile glass, unable to withstand the raw power surging from Danny.

The concentrated beam tore upward, completely destroying the ceiling of the massive carnival fun house they had been trapped inside. It ripped through the structure and pierced the dark, gloomy clouds hanging over Gotham City.

Danny hovered in the air, chest heaving as he took deep, labored breaths. His glowing green eyes remained lit with power, scanning the collapsing dreamscape around them.

The illusion finally shattered completely, dissolving away and dragging everyone back into the cold, grim reality of the real world. The whimsical garden vanished, replaced by the decaying interior of a twisted carnival fun house.

Robin looked around with a steely, focused gaze, his brows furrowed in grim determination. Tweedledee and Tweedledum had transformed back into Professor Pyg and the Dollmaker. The White Rabbit with his pocket watch was now the Clock King once again. Some of the party guests simply faded away, while others were ordinary civilians wearing forced hats, standing around in a confused daze.

Danny, Robin, and Ember all turned simultaneously toward the doll inside the ruined box. Their faces twisted into identical grimaces of horror.

The "Alice" was far more grotesque in reality. Surgical incisions ran visibly along her arms, forehead, legs, and face — crude, poorly healed scars from countless operations. Her wide-open blue eyes stared out with an eerie, lifeless, uncanny expression. Dry blood stained the areas around her eyes and cheeks, giving the horrifying impression that she had been crying tears of blood.

Danny clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles popped audibly. His head hung low, heavy with regret and simmering fury as the full weight of the nightmare settled over them.
