Chapter 251 - Chapter 251: Rematch (4)

[Third Person Pov]

Skulker's counterattack began the instant he reappeared—materializing directly behind Danny in a flare of green light. Danny reacted on pure instinct, throwing up a protective shield. Exactly as Skulker had predicted. A concentrated laser blast punched through the barrier and hurled the half-ghost across the cavernous interior of the chemical plant, slamming him into a cluster of rusted pipes.

Robin charged in next, bo staff spinning. Skulker's exo-suit moved with uncanny precision, already reading the trajectory. Two armored hands clamped down on the staff and before Robin could trigger the electrical discharge Skulker sent a high-voltage surge the other way instead. Electricity tore through Robin's body; the boy cried out as his muscles locked and his systems shorted.

With brutal efficiency Skulker reached into the stunned hero and ripped the spectral duplicate of Danny free, holding the struggling clone by the throat. A powerful backhand sent Robin flying through the open air toward the distant concrete floor far below.

From that height the fall would have been lethal.

"Robin!" Batman's voice cracked with urgency as he dove after the freefalling boy—only for Skulker to intercept him mid-flight, forcing the Dark Knight to abort the rescue.

Before Robin could hit the ground, a blur of orange and red streaked in from the side. Tucker's winged shoes beat frantically as he slammed into Robin at full speed, wrapping both arms around him. The two of them crashed hard against a reinforced wall in a chaotic tangle of limbs, then slid down it in a heap.

"Ughhh…" Tucker groaned, but still managed to lift one shaking hand and give both Batman and Danny a thumbs-up. "I got him… don't worry."

Above them the battle exploded into pure chaos.

Ghostly Wails tore through the air in overlapping waves. Gales of freezing wind howled between the chemical tanks. Torrents of neon-green fire bloomed and died in rapid succession. The entire Ace Chemical complex shook under the assault, metal groaning and concrete cracking. Yet no matter how overwhelming the barrage became, Skulker remained one step ahead—always just outside the perfect angle, always a fraction faster in head-to-head exchanges, always predicting the next movement before it fully formed.

Batman and Danny began phase-teleporting in rapid succession, vanishing and reappearing in a dizzying pattern meant to overwhelm the hunter's senses. It didn't work. Skulker's systems had already mapped their patterns too thoroughly. He knew where they would appear before they did.

Then the Ghost Hunter raised both katanas and began to spin.

He became a living shredder—a whirling cyclone of green steel and sparks—charging straight toward Danny. Danny braced, ready to intercept. At the last possible instant Skulker's spinning form veered, sliding past him so closely their shoulders brushed. For a frozen fraction of a second the hunter's helmeted face turned toward Danny, and a sly, triumphant grin flashed behind the visor. Then the spinning continued, carrying Skulker past Danny and directly toward Batman.

A desperate ghost ray lanced out to slow him. Skulker simply carved through the energy beam without breaking stride. The two combatants collided in a brief, furious exchange—katana blades ringing against the reinforced edges of Batman's bracers. With a series of precise, calculated movements Skulker shattered the Dark Knight's guard, then turned fully intangible and lunged.

He phased straight through Batman's body and emerged on the other side with the last remaining Danny duplicate impaled on one of his swords.

Skulker ripped the clone free and cut it down with a savage grin, then spun toward Batman, who had already fired a grappling line toward a distant rafter, Skulker unleashed a devastating Ghost Ray aimed his way without a second thought.

From a lower platform Sam thrust one hand upward. A shimmering violet shield bloomed around Batman just in time. It absorbed the worst of the initial impact—then shattered under the residual force. The Ghost Ray still struck Batman full in the chest, driving him backward with bone-crushing power. His body caved into the reinforced wall behind him. Blood sprayed from his lips as several ribs gave way with audible cracks.

His vision went black. He began to fall.

Danny was already there. He caught the unconscious form of the Dark Knight with careful strength and lowered him gently to the cracked concrete floor, emerald eyes burning with cold fury as he looked back up at the still-grinning Skulker.

Danny placed a careful hand over Batman's chest. His power of invisibility shifted, allowing his armor plating and flesh alike to become see-through. In an instant he mapped the damage: multiple fractured ribs, deep bruising along the sternum, internal stress that would have crippled an ordinary man. Nothing immediately life-threatening, but more than enough to take the Dark Knight out of the fight.

He exhaled slowly.

A soft purple glow bloomed beneath Batman's unconscious form. A stretcher of solid light formed and gently lifted him into the air. Danny looked up to find Sam descending beside him, violet energy still trailing from her fingertips.

"Leave him and Robin to Tucker and me," she said, offering a steady, reassuring nod. "You handle Skulker."

Danny's gaze lingered on Batman for a moment longer, then he nodded once and started to rise. He had already begun levitating when Sam's voice stopped him.

"And Danny—"

He paused midair and glanced back over his shoulder.

Sam bit her lower lip. "I'm sorry."

Danny's expression didn't soften. "What I need right now isn't an apology."

He offered no further explanation. In the next heartbeat he was gone, streaking after Skulker in a blur of white and green, leaving Sam standing alone beside the floating stretcher.

Across the ruined factory floor, Skulker spun both katanas in lazy, confident arcs. His laugh echoed off the metal walls.

"Finally. The real hunt can begin again. All those nuisances have been dealt with… so now it's just you and me."

Danny slowed to a hover, white eyes narrowing. If he wanted any chance against the exo-suit's absurd capabilities, he needed more than raw power. He needed protection. He needed to close the gap in reach and durability. He hated the admission even as it formed in his mind: right now, he stood almost no chance against whatever advanced technology Skulker's new armor had been built from.

So he began to build.

Ectoplasmic energy poured from his skin, layering itself in precise, interlocking plates. A full suit of spectral armor took shape around him—tall, imposing, its silhouette deliberately echoing the elegant menace of a certain shadow knight from another world. The finished construct stood nearly eye-to-eye with Skulker's massive frame, every surface a deep emerald green shot through with veins of colder cyan light.

In Danny's hands the pommel of a sword materialized; glacial energy raced along its length, forming a long, crystalline blade that steamed in the air. A matching helmet sealed over his face, leaving only two piercing blue eyes glowing from within the shadowed visor. A crest of living emerald flame settled along the top of the helm like a plume.

"I can make a cool suit too," Danny called, voice distorted and resonant through the helmet. "And I don't need a sugar daddy to help me build it."

The taunt landed exactly as intended. Skulker's metal faceplate twisted into a furious snarl.

"Hah… I've got just the right cage waiting for you, you brat."

They launched at each other.

The two armored figures streaked across the vast interior of the chemical plant, colliding again and again in a continuous trail of green light and shattering ice. To any observer they were little more than afterimages—constant impacts, constant motion, the air itself screaming under the force of their exchanges.

Far below, Sam and Tucker regrouped, both of them staring upward with growing helplessness. They could no longer track the fight with their eyes. All that remained were the deafening aftershocks: the ringing clash of blades, the thunder of impacts, the occasional explosion of frost or fire.

They never noticed the cold until it was already biting into their bones.

Their teeth began to chatter. Breath turned visible in the air. They instinctively hugged themselves as the temperature continued to plummet. Frost spread across every window in delicate white lace. Long icicles formed along the overhead pipes and began to drip, then freeze solid again. With every swing of Danny's new ice blade the chill deepened, turning the once-stifling chemical plant into a rapidly freezing tomb.

Yet even as the cold intensified, Skulker continued to adapt—faster and more completely than Danny had anticipated. The half-ghost could keep pace for now, but he was fighting against something more relentless than skill or experience. He was fighting an artificial intelligence that was learning him in real time, refining its counters with every exchange, every feint, every fraction of a second that passed.

Danny unleashed a swarm of blazing fireballs with a wide sweep of his sword, then fired twin beams of razor-sharp ice from his eyes. Skulker carved through the fireballs with casual precision, sidestepped the descending blade, and met the ice beams head-on with a crackling Ghost Ray of his own. The opposing energies collided in midair and detonated early when Danny answered with a full-powered Ghostly Wail, the resulting shockwave rattling the entire chemical plant.

Skulker vanished.

He reappeared an instant later directly in front of Danny, katana already flashing toward the half-ghost's throat. Danny jerked his head back just in time—the blade whispered past his neck—but he had no answer for the brutal roundhouse kick that followed. The armored boot smashed into the side of his helmet with bone-jarring force. The construct shattered. Danny was driven downward like a meteor, crashing hard into the concrete floor in a spray of ice shards and dust.

"Damn it!" he snarled, punching the ground hard enough to crack it further. He shoved himself back to his feet, ready to re-engage—

"Danny, wait!"

Sam and Tucker landed on either side of him, flanking him protectively.

Skulker rolled his glowing optical sensors. "Oh, great. More nuisances."

"What?" Danny snapped, the word sharp enough to make both of his friends flinch. A flash of guilt crossed his face. He forced himself to take a slow breath, reining the anger back under control.

Tucker looked up at the towering Ghost Hunter, voice steady despite the tension. "You can't beat him on your own."

Danny shot him a dry look. "Geez, man. Thanks."

"What Tucker means," Sam cut in smoothly, "is that we have to do this the old way. The only real chance we have is if we work together."

Tucker's mouth curved into a familiar, irrepressible smirk. "The classic Team Phantom style~"

"Enough of this!" Skulker roared, unleashing a continuous stream of Ghost Rays that scorched the ground and forced the three of them backward.

Sam and Danny raised their hands in perfect sync. Their shields—violet and green—interlocked and fused into a single, reinforced barrier that held against the barrage for several long seconds.

"I know you're angry with us," Tucker said over the roar of energy, expression openly apologetic. "And you have every right to be."

"But even you have to admit," Sam added, a small, hopeful smile touching her lips, "that when the three of us are together… there isn't anything we can't do."

Cracks spiderwebbed across the combined shield as Skulker poured on more power. A second later the barrier shattered. Danny answered the failure with a raw, furious Ghostly Wail that tore through the factory, venting every ounce of lingering frustration until his mind finally cleared.

He stepped forward, voice quieter but firm.

"Alright. Let's do this one more time."

Sam's grin widened as cyan flames bloomed to life across both of her palms.

Danny blinked. "Are those—?"

"I'll explain later," she said. The flames rose, forming a perfect ring of fire above her head. As she levitated off the ground the ring descended around her body. In a flash of violet and cyan light her appearance shifted—strands of her black hair igniting into living purple flame that danced like a crown.

Beside her, Tucker already had his PDA out, fingers flying across the screen. "I've got an idea for how we can take Skulker down… but I'm going to need you two to pin him in place long enough for me to finish what I need to do."

"Leave it to us," Danny and Sam answered together, confidence returning to both their voices.

The three of them rose into the air as one, hovering side by side, and locked eyes with the increasingly annoyed Ghost Hunter.

"Let's go!" Danny commanded.

They shot forward together.

"TEAM PHANTOM IS BACK, BABY! WOOOOH!" Tucker howled at the top of his lungs.

Even Danny couldn't stop the grin that spread across his face. The spectral helmet construct reformed over his head a moment later, hiding the expression—but not the renewed fire burning behind his glowing eyes.
