I lingered outside her door for a moment, far longer than necessary. My hand hovered hesitantly near the handle, as if it were heavy with unspoken fears. Hesitation wasn't typically in my nature, but today felt different. Everything about this morning had spiraled into chaos. Bob had walked out of the office with an air of ownership, his confidence practically radiating off him as he casually referred to Zoe as his client. He acted as if he had everything under control, while I felt like an unnecessary afterthought.
A slow exhale escaped my lips as I ran a trembling hand through my hair, the weight of uncertainty settling heavily on my shoulders. What was I supposed to say when I stepped inside? "Hi, I came here to do exactly what the last guy just did?" It sounded absurd—desperate and utterly pointless. For the first time in what felt like ages, an unsettling realization washed over me: I felt utterly useless.
