Zoe's POV
I didn't even wait for Seth to get out of the car.
The moment the SUV rolled to a stop beneath the dim glow of the streetlights, I hurried down the driveway, rounded the front of the vehicle, and climbed into the passenger seat so quickly it almost felt like I was running away after stealing something precious.
My heart was still racing.
I didn't know if it was fear.
Guilt.
Or simply the relief of finally leaving that house.
Seth looked at me for a brief second.
He didn't ask why I was in such a hurry.
He didn't ask why I had called after ignoring him for days.
He simply reached across, pulled the door shut, walked around the front of the car, and climbed into the driver's seat.
Within seconds, we were driving.
The streets were almost empty.
Lakeside looked nothing like the town I had grown to know over the summer.
No traffic.
No students.
No music drifting from cafés.
No joggers.
