Chapter 23 - CHAPTER 18 : Last Battle and New Beginning (Season 1) — Part 2

The silent, suffocating aftermath of a titan's fall descended upon the clearing. When the magic Mana Core of the ten-thousand-year-old ancient Tree Demon finally shattered under the devastating impact of Ray-Lin's menacing black greatsword, the world seemed to lose its breath. The chaotic winds died down, and the floating debris, mingled with toxic green mist, began to slowly drift toward the damp forest floor. The deafening, earth-shaking roars of the wooden behemoth were replaced by a profound, eerie silence that clung to the ancient trees like a shroud.

Ray-Lin stood in the center of the devastation, leaning heavily on the hilt of his greatsword, which was embedded deep in the cracked earth. He gasped for air, his chest heaving violently. The sheer physical and mental toll of utilizing the forbidden 'Soul Absorb' technique was crashing down upon him in relentless waves. Within his veins, the dark, crimson-red energy of the Dark Lord was still violently pulsing, refusing to be easily tamed. With a painful groan, he focused his remaining willpower, forcing the sinister power back into the deepest recesses of his dantian, where it finally settled back into a dormant state.

A few yards away, Mi-Shu stood completely frozen, her eyes wide with a mixture of awe and sheer terror. What she had just witnessed was something that defied the very laws of the cultivation world. No ordinary cultivator, regardless of their genius, should have been able to obliterate a ten-thousand-year-old beast with such brute, dark force. However, as she looked at Ray-Lin's trembling, exhausted figure—his armor cracked and his breathing shallow—her shock slowly morphed into deep suspicion and overwhelming worry. She took a hesitant step forward, her boots crunching softly on the charred leaves.

Facing the Truth and Growing Suspicion

"Ray-Lin..." Mi-Shu's voice was barely a whisper, trembling with an emotion she couldn't quite define.

Her gaze locked onto Ray-Lin's eyes. They were still swirling with a chaotic, blood-red and pitch-black light, failing to return to their natural color. The sheer malice radiating from his aura made her skin crawl.

"Who... what are you really?" she asked, her voice growing firmer despite her fear. "That strength you just displayed... it doesn't belong to any orthodox cultivation sect. The crimson lightning, the absolute darkness... it looks exactly like—"

She stopped herself. The words 'Demon Cultivator' hovered on the tip of her tongue, but she dared not speak them aloud. In the cultivation world, even uttering that phrase in association with someone meant condemning them to death.

Ray-Lin tried to form a reassuring smile, but the excruciating pain in his meridians made it look like a grimace. His legs gave out, and he slid down the length of his sword, kneeling on the cold ground. Internally, a dark, mocking laughter echoed in his mind. The cold, haughty voice of the Dark Lord resounded within his consciousness:

"Do you see this, kid? Look at the suspicion burning in her eyes. This is the true nature of humanity. You risked your very soul to tear that demon tree apart and save her life, and yet, her first instinct is to anatomize the source of your power. Go ahead, tell her the truth and watch how quickly she turns the entire orthodox alliance against you. Dig your own grave, if you must."

"Be quiet, Darky," Ray-Lin snapped back in his thoughts, forcing the entity to silence. He took a ragged breath, looked up at Mi-Shu, and spoke in a low, gravelly voice.

"Mi-Shu, I know what is running through your mind. Anyone who saw what I just did would brand me a monster, a heretic. But you must believe me—I have never stepped onto the path of evil. When I was left for dead in the depths of this desolate forest, starving and broken, I stumbled upon a legacy. A remnant of an ancient power that granted me this unique Cultivation Art. It is violent, yes, and it looks terrifying, but its sole purpose is survival, not mindless destruction."

Mi-Shu stared into his eyes, searching for any trace of deceit. In the grand libraries of her clan, demon cultivators were always depicted as ruthless, bloodthirsty psychopaths who reveled in torture. Yet, looking at Ray-Lin's pale, sweat-drenched face and the genuine worry he held for her safety, she found no malice.

She let out a long, heavy sigh, letting the dark clouds of suspicion in her mind scatter for the moment. "I want to believe you, Ray-Lin. A true demon cultivator would never put their life on the line to shield another. But you cannot deny that this dark secret of yours places a massive wall between us and the rest of the world."

The Shattered Seal and the Twin Horrors

Before Ray-Lin could respond, a sudden, thunderous vibration shook the ground beneath their feet. A low, guttural roar, filled with ancient wrath, echoed from the eastern sector of the forest.

All the color instantly drained from Mi-Shu's face. She whipped her head around, her eyes dilating in sheer panic. The thousands-of-years-old ancient trees that she had temporarily bound using her high-tier '4th Rank Defense Talisman' were breaking free. The brilliant gold spiritual chains she had conjured were cracking, dissolving into useless specks of light under the relentless assault of the beasts.

"No, no, no!" Mi-Shu cried out in despair. "The talisman's seal is completely shattered! My 'Ki' reserves are entirely depleted... I don't have enough spiritual energy left to activate even a basic escape talisman!"

Ray-Lin struggled to push himself up, but his muscles screamed in protest. The severe backlash of the 'Soul Absorb' technique felt as if thousands of needles were piercing his flesh simultaneously.

"Darky... tell me we have something left," Ray-Lin pleaded in his mind.

The Dark Lord scoffed, his voice filled with annoyance. "Are you out of your mind? After forcibly digesting the energy of a ten-thousand-year-old beast, your Meridians are practically burning like molten iron. If you attempt to channel even a single drop of spiritual energy right now, they will rupture, and you will be paralyzed for life. We need to run, now!"

But the universe had no intention of giving them an easy escape.

With a series of deafening cracks, the massive trees surrounding the clearing began to uproot themselves, their colossal, vine-like limbs thrashing wildly. The ancient wooden monsters, freed from their golden chains, charged toward them. To make matters worse, from the shadows of the northern path, a massive, terrifying creature emerged. It was the fifty-five-thousand-year-old 'Blue Rank 1' Black Wolf beast. Its glowing blue eyes locked onto the two exhausted cultivators, completely blocking their only path of escape.

Furious tree demons on one side, and a lethal Blue Rank beast on the other—they were trapped in a circle of certain death.

The Dark Lord's Ultimate Gamble

"Mi-Shu, get behind me!" Ray-Lin roared, dragging his trembling body in front of her. He gripped his greatsword with both hands, his knuckles turning white.

His current cultivation at the 5th Stage of the Green Rank was nothing more than a speck of dust compared to a Blue Rank beast. The gap was astronomical. Yet, his gaze remained fiercely defiant.

"Ray-Lin, stop! Are you insane?" Mi-Shu screamed, tears of frustration welling in her eyes. "There is a gap of fifteen entire stages between you and that wolf! You won't even survive a single casual swipe of its claw!"

Ray-Lin ignored her cries and focused entirely on his inner world. "Darky! I am not dying here, and I am definitely not letting her die. Give me a solution. Anything that can freeze that Blue Rank beast, even if it's just for a few seconds, so she can escape!"

The Dark Lord went dead silent for a moment. When he finally spoke, his tone was uncharacteristically solemn and heavy.

"You are a stubborn, colossal fool, kid. But it is this very madness of yours that amuses me. Fine. I will gamble with you. I will release the final one percent of my remaining 'Soul Power' and channel it directly into your blade. It will allow you to execute a forbidden 'Dark Sword Art' capable of paralyzing even a Blue Rank beast for a brief moment. But the price is steep, Ray-Lin. Your meridians will be completely locked. For the next three months, you will not be able to use a single shred of 'Ki'. You will be as helpless as a common mortal. Do we have a deal?"

"Do it!" Ray-Lin roared in his mind.

Unleashing the Soul Breaker

In an instant, a terrifying, abyssal black mist erupted from the 'Dark Cave' deep within Ray-Lin's soul. The dark energy surged through his arms and poured into his greatsword, coating the blade in a flickering, shadowy flame. The temperature in the clearing plummeted instantly, turning their breath into white mist. Ray-Lin's eyes underwent a frightening transformation, turning completely pitch-black, devoid of any white or color.

Sensing the sudden, existential threat, the Black Wolf let out a deafening howl and leaped into the air, its razor-sharp claws aimed directly at Ray-Lin's throat.

"Dark Art: Soul Breaker!" Ray-Lin bellowed, leaping upward to meet the beast mid-air.

He swung his greatsword with all his might. A massive, crescent-shaped wave of pure, concentrated dark energy tore through the air, splitting the forest's darkness. The shadowy wave slammed directly into the forehead of the Black Wolf. The mighty Blue Rank beast let out a agonizing, pathetic shriek as the spiritual attack bypassed its physical armor, striking its very soul.

The glowing 'Blue Core' in its forehead flickered violently, and its massive body crashed heavily onto the earth, completely paralyzed and twitching in agony.

Ray-Lin hit the ground hard, his greatsword slipping from his lifeless fingers. His vision began to rapidly blur, turning pitch-black. "Mi-Shu... run... now..." he managed to choke out before his consciousness completely failed him, and he collapsed into a heap on the dirt.

Mi-Shu did not hesitate. Wiping the tears from her face, she gathered every remaining ounce of her strength, hoisted Ray-Lin's heavy, unconscious body onto her shoulders, and bolted toward the narrow mountain pass. Behind her, the enraged tree demons were already closing in, but her feet carried her forward into the unknown, leaving the chaotic battlefield behind.

The Silent Carriage to Shu City

Escaping the suffocating, terrifying shadows of the ancient forest, Mi-Shu finally emerged at the edge of the rocky mountain path. Gasping for air, her muscles trembling under Ray-Lin's weight, she spotted a covered wooden carriage waiting by the roadside—a common, sturdy transport vessel utilized by traveling cultivators.

With extreme care, she laid Ray-Lin's limp body onto the cushioned seat inside. He looked incredibly pale, his breathing so faint it was barely perceptible. The price of using the forbidden 'Soul Breaker' was painfully clear; his meridians were entirely sealed, leaving him devoid of any spiritual energy, indistinguishable from a common mortal.

"Drive! As fast as you can!" Mi-Shu commanded the carriage driver, her voice laced with urgency.

The driver lashed the spiritual horses, and the carriage jolted forward, kicking up a massive cloud of dust as it sped along the bumpy road. They were heading directly toward 'Shu City', a bustling metropolitan hub dominated by powerful cultivation clans. It was a journey of several hours, during which Mi-Shu never took her eyes off Ray-Lin, occasionally wiping the cold sweat from his forehead, praying that his sealed meridians wouldn't collapse entirely.

By the time the carriage rattled through the towering, fortified stone gates of Shu City, the sun had begun to set, casting a warm, golden glow over the busy streets. The noises of street vendors and patrolling guards echoed outside, but Mi-Shu remained focused. The carriage navigated the winding streets, heading straight toward the most prestigious estate in the eastern sector—the grand manor of the 'Shu Family'.

Hidden in the Guestroom

The carriage came to a halt right before the majestic entrance of the Shu Mansion. Mi-Shu opened the door and stepped out, her mind working rapidly. She knew she had to handle this situation with absolute discretion. If the elders of her family discovered that she had brought a heavily injured, mysterious cultivator who possessed dark, suspicious techniques into the manor, it would spark an immediate uproar.

Supporting Ray-Lin's weight, she walked past the grand gates. The guards at the entrance bowed respectfully but looked at the unconscious youth with raised eyebrows. Before they could ask any questions, Mi-Shu called over a couple of loyal, low-ranking house servants.

"Take him immediately through the rear gardens to the quietest, most secluded Guestroom in the eastern wing," she commanded in a low, authoritative whisper. "Ensure that no one sees you, and do not speak a word of this to anyone. Provide him with basic medical care and let him rest undisturbed. If my father asks, I will handle it."

The servants, recognizing the serious look on the young miss's face, bowed deeply and carried Ray-Lin away through the shadow of the corridors. Seeing him safely tucked away, Mi-Shu let out a sigh of relief. Now, she had to face her family and report the events of the forest.

A Tense Family Council and Ruo-Shu's Destiny

Mi-Shu walked quickly toward the main council hall of the mansion, intending to find her parents and report the terrifying encounter with the ancient Tree Demon. However, as she approached the heavy wooden doors of the hall, the sound of serious, low-pitched voices caught her attention.

She paused, pressing her back against the cool wall near the doorway, peering through the slight opening.

Inside the grand hall, her father and mother were seated around a polished mahogany table. Across from them sat a highly respected and formidable figure—her Grandfather, the patriarch of the clan. The atmosphere in the room was incredibly heavy, but to Mi-Shu's surprise, they weren't discussing her safety or the beasts in the forest at all.

Her Grandfather took a slow sip of his spiritual tea, his voice deep and echoing in the quiet room. "For the absolute survival, honor, and future prosperity of our Shu Family, we must finalize the marriage alliance for Ruo-Shu without any further delay. Ruo-Shu is our eldest daughter—the 'First Miss of the Shu Family'—and her union with a powerful sect is of paramount importance to our clan's standing."

Mi-Shu's heart sank slightly as she listened from the shadows. While her family was deeply engrossed in negotiating the political marriage of her elder sister, Ruo-Shu, she stood outside, carrying the weight of a near-death encounter and harborer of a mysterious, powerless cultivator.

She hesitated, unsure whether to burst in and disrupt their crucial family discussion with her tales of demon trees and black wolves, or to wait until the meeting concluded.

And far away in the quiet guestroom, completely unconscious, Ray-Lin slept, utterly unaware that this very eldest miss, Ruo-Shu, was destined to become his greatest ally, his sanctuary, and the ultimate love of his life in the chaotic journey ahead.
