Chapter 58 - Chapter 37: Surviving the Void

Laura didn't know how long she's been fighting, but she was starting to get tired. She jumped down a cliff that suddenly formed beneath her and into - no - through the ocean below, falling into a field of flowers below the water just as a bombardment of projectiles landed in her last location. If there's one good thing about the Void, it's the lack of defined shape making it easier to lose her pursuers.

Suddenly, a Forsaken that looked like a Minotaur tried to grab her from her left, while what Lucilla can only call a living embodiment of modern art tried to skewer her from her right. She simply twisted out of the art piece's way before spinning around and stabbing the Minotaur in the head. That didn't stop the beast, but it slowed it down enough for her to dance away from danger.

The worst part about the Void being undefined was that by using the same methods she used to evade her attackers; they can use the same methods to appear from anywhere. It was inconvenient to say the least.

She complained, but she was mostly unharmed. She was injured of course; she did jump into a melee with hundreds of other Void Spawn. However, Laura wasn't feared for nothing.

She turned right on an invisible corner and came across three Forsaken waiting for her. With a wave of her hand, several arcs of what appeared to be lightning blasted them to pieces. They weren't dead, since she didn't have the leeway to aim for their cores. She still managed to stab one of them with her spear as she passed them by though, hitting their core and killing them at least.

She was slowly losing most of her pursuers, but it wasn't enough. She needed to find a safe area to hide and recover. She knew a place, but it will still take a while longer to-

Her thoughts were interrupted when a skyscraper from sci-fi world suddenly grew out of the ground in front of her. It rose into the air with great speed, the roof of the building actually slamming into the bottom of her jaw, breaking her neck and sending her flying backwards and landing on the ground in a daze.

She should've seen that coming. She just wasn't paying attention. sitting up, Laura grabbed her head and snapped it back into place. If she was in her mortal body, that would've killed it just then, luckily, she's in her true form and won't be killed that easily.

Speaking of being killed. Laura deformed her body and made three openings as three bladed weapons passed through her. she quickly got herself back up, while letting out an explosive electrical discharge, frying the two Forsaken and one Voidling in the process. The Forsaken were injured and the Voidling killed.

Taking the opportunity, Laura ran towards the two dazed Forsaken and shoved both arms into their chest before ripping out their cores and eating them. Another positive about this situation is she can eat other Void Spawn without worrying about to much drawback. If she wasn't careful, she could still lose her sense of self, but since she no longer had to worry about the stability of her vessel, she had a much higher limit to what she could consume.

A flood of energy went through her, to the point she actually stumbled as she acclimated the energy into herself. She then turned towards the building in front of her and smiled. It was a normal office building, with a bit of a futuristic esthetic to it. However, it was also a shortcut she could use to travel to the other side of the Void if needed.

Without any hesitation she stepped into the building and immediately found the stairs leading into the building's basement. After leaving the stair well, Laura looked at the underground space. It looked like an overgrown parking garage, as if the place was abandoned for decades. Making it seem as if the pristine and clean building above was nothing but a lie. Laura of course knew she was just seeing the same building during a different part of its timeline.

She scanned the empty area till she found the emergency exit. She willed her instinctual knowledge of the Void to guide her where she wanted to go. Traveling through the Void was not a linear experience. Time and distance didn't work in the Void. It was basically meaningless.

It was to the point Laura was ready to stay here for several years as she waited for Zenesha to summon her. It was just a fact of the Void that even if Zenesha was able to summon her the second, she disappeared, her time away from Zenesha would've been much different in comparison.

As she approached the emergency exit, she heard a noise to her left. Her attention instantly snapped towards the elevator on the other side of the area and when the door opened....

"Oh, that's not good." She mumbled feeling a little defeated as she watched herself and Zenesha emerge from behind the sliding doors.

Her - what Laura can only assume is a future version of herself - paused and looked at her with mild surprise but just ignored her otherwise and tried dragging Zenesha along with her. Zenesha however just looked at her with wide eye shock but let her future version drag her away.

Laura narrowed her eyes as she realized her other version of herself didn't feel right. Neither did Zenesha.

Then it clicked. 'She figured it out!' She exclaimed in her head.

Then she paused as she realized that this version of her had also given Zenesha the same Abyss energy as herself. That means they can be the same.

Laura smiled at that as she turned and left for the emergency exit. Too distracted to notice how disheveled the future versions of herself and Zenesha looked.

"Fuck me and all that is righteous." Laura cussed as she fought off a class two Hollowed One.

The thing was just a mass of tentacles, blades, and mouths. Its size being taller than any room it was in, but the top of it was always visible no matter what. It was a very disconcerting sight to witness. If Laura wasn't a Forsaken, she probably would've had a hard time figuring out where to look and attack exactly. Thankfully her weird Void brain made this impossibly weirdly dimensional being look completely normal.

"I should probably branch out in other Dimensions to fight this thing." Laura said to herself.

However, she didn't expand her body to occupy more than three dimensions. She still attacked in more than three however, and eventually she plunged her arm down on of its mouths, and watched it emerged from another mouth on a completely different side of the body far away from her current position. But in her hand, she held the creature's core.

Applying pressure to it, she shattered the creature's core and watched the gray and black mass disintegrated in front of her. She sighed as she checked the damage to her body.

It's been months. She's started crafting herself a new mortal body, but it's been hard finding the resources for it. She's forced to wait for some unfortunate creature or person from reality to slip their way into the Void by accident so she can harvest them. So far, her progress a lot of meat and not enough body.

Laura sighed as she realized her recovery time will take even longer before grabbing the dead human that she fought the Hollowed One for. She needed another specimen to study so she can craft a mortal body properly. Her last one was beyond recovery after her last experiment.

As it turned out, making living creatures is hard. Especially if it needs to house a Void creature in it and be able to do things most mortals couldn't. It wasn't as easy as just making a person. Which, like she already figured out, wasn't easy.

After grabbing the poor dead female, that was aptly named H-13, Laura made her way back to one of her families abandoned research laboratories. A building properly built in the Void and has a field around it, stabilizing its location making time flow normally among other things.

It was also a place no one knew about. No one alive anyway. Everyone that knew this place's location was killed by her years ago.

"But it was also home for thirteen years." She muttered. "I know this place better than anyone.
