Chapter 240 – The Boy Chosen by the Unicorn

"Oak, not red oak, but English oak.

It is the king of the forest from the winter solstice to the summer solstice. A wand that remains with you whether in pride or despair. Oak is a wood known for extreme loyalty to its owner."

"The dragon heartstring, on the other hand, is the core that changes hands most easily. It is the most unstable, following only the strong. Yet paradoxically, the wands it produces are among the most powerful, and the spells they cast are the most dazzling. Compared to other cores, dragon heartstring wands also have greater learning ability."

"The combination of such loyal, steadfast wood with such an unruly core is outrageous—like a bird swimming in the sea. To make matters more striking, the wand itself is unusually long, sixteen inches, with a slight curve."

While Alexander Smith and Dumbledore were still digesting the shocking revelations from earlier, Ollivander continued his lecture, explaining why this wand belonged to the rare category of Seven Impossible Combinations.

"Where's the last wand?" Alexander asked suddenly, his tone carrying a curious sharpness.

"I want to try the combination of elder wood and unicorn tail hair," he added, almost instinctively.

Ollivander's pale eyes snapped toward him. "I'm afraid it's not suitable for you. Haven't you noticed? Every wand I've handed you so far—their wood and cores—lean toward wizards who prize strength, neutrality, and even flirt with darkness. Elder wood paired with unicorn hair… that is a union far too pure. Not for one who craves power at any cost."

His refusal was almost blunt. As if to say: You are Voldemort's shadow—you cannot hope to match the innocence of a unicorn.

"Let Alexander try it," Dumbledore interjected calmly. "At least give him the chance. You can start with other unicorn hair wands first."

The old wizard's eyes glinted with an unusual intuition. Somewhere deep inside, he felt this trial might reveal something tied to Alexander's true nature—perhaps even connected to his rejection of Voldemort's darkness.

Ollivander sighed but relented.

"Very well. Try this first: applewood with unicorn tail hair, nine and three-quarter inches, very flexible."

As soon as the wand touched Alexander's fingertips, it began to tremble.

"What?! How is that possible—you reacted to this?" Ollivander gasped.

He scrambled, pulling out another. "Ash wood with unicorn tail hair, eleven inches. Yes… yes, much better."

But before he could calm himself, he pressed yet another wand into Alexander's hand. "Try this one—a… shall we say, ill-matched pair. Black pear wood with unicorn tail hair, twelve inches, very hard. A bad boy's wand, with a good girl's heart."

The reaction nearly sent Ollivander into a frenzy. The pile of discarded wands beside him had grown into a mountain. His normally composed face had turned pale, then flushed, then pale again—like a beggar suddenly handed treasures too fine for his hands.

"Dumbledore… you were right!" he exclaimed breathlessly.

"Phew!" Dumbledore replied with a small smile. "When am I ever wrong?"

Finally, Ollivander pulled out the wand he had avoided. His voice trembled as he held it out: "Here it is. Elder wood and unicorn tail hair. Thirteen inches. A truly extraordinary combination."

The moment Alexander touched it, something stirred within him. From the wand's tail handle, a voice whispered—not aloud, but deep in his heart. A woman's voice, sharp yet tender, stern yet beautiful.

It was his mother's blessing.

From Dumbledore's and Ollivander's perspective, Alexander's body glowed softly with a white light. His outline blurred, as if he were returning to the fragile, luminous state he had once held when he was first awakened by Dumbledore.

"Amazing," Ollivander whispered, awe-struck. "It has finally found its true master."

In that instant, the wandmaker no longer saw Voldemort's shadow. He saw only Alexander Smith—the boy chosen by the unicorn.

"Do you understand how rare this is?" Ollivander continued, voice hushed with reverence. "The elder wand has been whispered of as the most powerful wand in history. I like to call it the Elder Wand. Elder is rare, difficult to control, often considered unlucky. Unicorn tail hair, by contrast, is considered common—even plain—yet it is unfailingly loyal, resistant to corruption, and reflects the purest essence of magic."

"Together, these two should have been utterly incompatible. And yet… they are not. It is as if the proudest wandwood and the humblest core have chosen you as their bridge. Mr. Smith, it all depends on your choices from here."

His pale eyes softened, almost pleading. "You remind me of another young man I once knew long ago. I beg of you—do not walk his path. Stay true, and you may grow to be every bit as great as Dumbledore."

It was the first time Ollivander had ever issued such a warning.

Alexander nodded gravely. For once, there was no hint of pretense in him—only sincerity.

And that, more than anything, shocked Dumbledore.

What had changed this boy so much, in so little time?
