Raven looked at Alara and continued saying. "I've told you before not to watch movies by yourself, Alara. You often misunderstand innuendos, and you're so innocent and shy that I don't want you to get the wrong idea about anything related to raunchy comedy movies."
Alara's lips curled into a faint smile, her mouth still smeared with fresh cow blood. "Okay, I will try to remember to have you present when I watch late-night horror movies from now on as well as those comedy movies. That's where I pick up all these innuendos I don't understand."
Raven let out a long, exacerbated sigh. "I wish I could believe you Alara. I honestly do. But I think you're going to keep being a movie fanatic for the foreseeable future."
Her eyes drifted to the five wolves nearby, knowing she has already lost this battle. "It looks like your wolves are growing quickly thanks to the time difference inside Sanctuary. After our little vacation, they should be at least halfway to adults, and since they've already mutated, it won't be long before they reach level one. I analyzed the blood samples from the mutated wolves you killed earlier they are evolving fast thanks to the warmer season and a more abundant food supply. I suspect that as animals feed on each other more now that the snow is gone, the appearance of level one mutated animals will increase rapidly. Nature will compensate by allowing humans to awaken powers more quickly. By now, enough people have probably figured out that if you absorb the energy of a zombie's nucleus core, you can awaken supernatural powers. That's zombie knowledge 101 in any apocalypse lore from books or movies.
"Most people smart enough will realize zombie nucleus cores are the key to awakening powers it's just a matter of how they choose to absorb the energy. The method I told you about before meditating and absorbing it slowly will let quite a few people awaken safely. But those who are impatient and swallow the cores raw…" Raven's voice grew uneasy. "They will mutate into something not human anymore, and the people around them will pay for their mistake."
Alara lifted her head in question asking. "Raven what happens when they eat nucleus cores raw?"
Raven answered saying.
"Humans who eat raw zombie cores become what are known as Freaks. They're not awakened humans who awaken naturally they are mentally deranged psychos who brutally murder people indiscriminately with their powers thanks to loosing their minds to the corrosive energy of the cores. I'm sure people will quickly see the cause and effect of this method but in the apocalypse, you never run out of idiots chasing shortcuts to power. Freaks like to gather in groups, the same way end-of-the-world cults and other weirdos do. We will be dealing with plenty of both soon enough. Once Freaks are expelled from bases or escape from them, they will find each other and form… into something that's no good for zombies or humans.
"Most bases will kill anyone caught doing this inside their walls, but some still slip through because no one's prepared for Freaks to appear. And if you ever meet one, the best thing to do is kill them. You can't have a normal conversation with them — they're worse than raiders. They're all cannibals."
Alara's eyes lit up. "Oh, they like to eat humans, just like me."
Raven's hand chopped down lightly onto the top of Alara's head. "How many times do I have to tell you not to eat humans? That's a bad behavior and unbecoming of my girlfriend."
Alara's shoulders sank. "I'm sorry. I won't eat humans just other animals and the food you make me."
"I don't want you eating anything raw," Raven said, exhaling in exasperation. "But fine. As long as you don't eat humans eat whatever you want."
A sly look moved across Alara's eyes. He he, I fooled you into letting me eat more beefcake.
What she didn't realize was that Raven was far from fooled and would be ready to lecture her again. This is a battle Alara is destined to lose.
Raven reached into her system space, producing a handkerchief, and began wiping the blood from Alara's face. "Honestly, Alara, what would you do without me here to take care of you? Look at how messy you've become. Let's take you back to the house and get you changed while your wolves finish the scraps you left for them. We can settle this argument another day."
She took Alara's hand and led her back to Rose Manor. Inside the dressing room, after an intimate shower together, they emerged with steam still clinging to their skin. Raven picked out outfits for both of them, laying them neatly on the bed.
"I'm going to make you a classic American dish for supper spaghetti and meatballs," Raven said as she dressed. "And tomorrow we'll have some pizza. I stockpiled plenty of ingredients to make it fresh for you. I want you to experience classic pre-apocalypse cuisine."
