Chapter 682 - Chapter 540

The streets of Symphoria Harbor churned with the usual chaos of a market day. Minks of every shape and size wove through the narrow passages between coral-stone buildings, their voices a melodic tapestry. The air smelled of roasting coffee, drying fish, and the sweet perfume of flowering vines that clung to the white lime walls.

Lieutenant Corin Rain, African Wild Dog Mink, cut through the crowd like a blade, his ochre-and-black mottled fur streaked with sweat. He dodged a merchant's cart, leaped over a sprawled child, and narrowly avoided a collision with a heavily laden donkey. His dark eyes remained fixed on the harbor ahead, his jaw tight with the urgency of his mission.

"Excuse me—pardon—moving through—"

He tripped over a stray basket, pinwheeled his arms, and caught himself on a market stall, sending a cascade of colorful fabric fluttering to the ground. The vendor shouted after him, but Corin was already gone, weaving through the crowd with the relentless determination of a mink who had been trained to never stop.

Captain Kapi Bash, Bushbaby Mink, rounded a corner at full speed, his compact bushbaby frame a blur of silver-grey fur. His enormous amber eyes were wide with focus, his ears flattened against his skull for aerodynamics. He was making excellent time—until he collided with a solid wall of ochre fur.

The impact sent both officers tumbling into a heap of limbs and apologies.

"Corin!" Kapi scrambled to his feet, brushing dust from his crimson cloak. "What has you in such a tizzy, Lieutenant?"

Corin rose more slowly, his mottled fur ruffled and his composure thoroughly shaken. He straightened his beadwork collar and fixed Kapi with a flat stare. "Ginmin business. Nothing you should be concerned with." He paused, his ears swiveling with suspicion. "What about you?"

Kapi's grin flashed, wide and mischievous. "Same as you. Senshimin business. Nothing that concerns you."

They stood there for a moment, two officers of rival divisions, each pretending they weren't heading in exactly the same direction. The harbor was visible at the end of the street, its blue waters glinting in the afternoon sun. A massive, impossible shape loomed at the dock—a vessel unlike anything Ushirika had ever seen.

Kapi's grin faltered. "It appears you have business at the harbor."

Corin nodded, his dark eyes fixed on the distant vessel. "As do you."

They exchanged a look—the kind of look that said neither would admit defeat, neither would back down, and neither would be the first to break eye contact.

Then Kapi bolted.

Corin was right behind him, his long legs eating up the distance. They tore through the streets of Symphoria Harbor, a blur of crimson and indigo, leaping over obstacles and dodging pedestrians with the grace of seasoned soldiers. Their competitive streak had transformed a simple race into a matter of pride.

They reached the dock at the same moment, their momentum carrying them forward in a tangle of limbs. They crashed into each other, stumbled, and collapsed in a heap at the base of the gangplank, gasping for breath.

A voice floated down from above. "Are you two alright?"

Corin and Kapi scrambled to their feet, brushing themselves off with as much dignity as they could muster. Kapi's cloak was crooked; Corin's beadwork collar had twisted sideways. They straightened themselves in unison.

"We're alright," Corin managed, his voice flat but breathless. "Thanks for asking."

Then they looked up.

The Dreadnought Thalassa towered above them, its black hull gleaming with moisture, its impossible size dwarfing every other vessel in the harbor. The ancient lines of its construction spoke of a civilization that had mastered technologies the current age could barely comprehend. The retractable fin-sail rose like a monument to forgotten gods, and the deck—the massive, sprawling deck—stretched beyond their ability to see its full length.

Kapi's curse came out as a whisper. "It's massive."

Corin nodded slowly, his dark eyes wide with awe. "I have never seen a ship like this. Not even in the old records."

They stood there, two of Ushirika's finest officers, utterly dumbstruck by the vessel before them. It took a full thirty seconds for them to compose themselves, to remember they were supposed to be professional, to snap their jaws shut and turn their attention back to their mission.

---

On the deck of the Dreadnought Thalassa, Eliane and Barren worked side by side. The sea king's massive carcass lay stretched across the deck, its scales gleaming in the afternoon sun. Eliane's white chef's jacket was stained with blood and brine, but her hands moved with the precision of a master craftsman as she sectioned the meat.

Barren, meanwhile, was struggling with a particularly stubborn piece of hide. His massive brown bear paws slipped and slid, and he grunted with effort. "This thing is tough."

Eliane glanced up from her work, her blue eyes catching the movement on the dock. "What is?" She squinted, her silver hair falling across her face. "There are two of them."

Barren followed her gaze, his warm brown eyes blinking slowly. "Oh. They're with the guards."

Eliane tilted her head. "The guards?"

Barren nodded, then waved his massive paw at the two figures on the dock. "Hello!"

Corin and Kapi both paused, their attention snapping to the enormous bear Mink who had just waved at them like they were old friends.

Corin's voice was flat, professional. "Are you a member of this crew?"

Barren's brow furrowed. He pointed a thick finger at his own chest. "Who, me?"

Kapi's voice carried a sharp edge of impatience. "Yes, you. Who else would I be talking to?"

Barren paused, considering the question with the slow deliberation of someone who had never been asked that before. "Well, I don't know. Who?"

Eliane chuckled, wiping her hands on her apron. "I'm part of the crew." She smiled warmly, her blue eyes crinkling at the corners. "Would you like to come on board for some tea?"

Corin and Kapi exchanged a glance. Kapi's ears perked. "Did she just say tea?"

Eliane called down, her voice bright. "I think I may have some cake too. We're ready for a break."

Barren's face lit up with slow understanding. "Oh. Tea sounds nice."

Kapi shrugged, his earlier suspicions forgotten. "I could go for some tea."

Corin nodded, a rare smile tugging at his muzzle. "And cake."

Kapi called back up, his voice carrying the enthusiasm of a man who had just discovered the secret to happiness. "Tea sounds lovely. We would love a cup."

Eliane beamed, her silver hair catching the sunlight. "Great! Come on up."
