The throne room of Symphoria Palace stretched in elegant proportions, its coral-stone walls adorned with tapestries depicting the history of Ushirika—the great migration, the unification, the long vigil. Sunlight streamed through tall arched windows, casting golden rectangles across the polished floor. The air smelled of ancient paper and the faint sweetness of the flowering vines that climbed the outer walls.
King Volt Ostara sat at a small table near the window, his silver-grey fur shifting in the warm light. His hazel eyes scanned the massive tome before him, its pages yellowed with age and filled with the careful script of generations of archivists. His reading spectacles perched on his snout, and his magnificent silver-grey tail curled around the leg of his chair with the easy comfort of a creature at rest.
Lieutenant Bolale Hero stood across from him, her compact honey badger frame barely reaching the table's height. Her thick coke-bottle glasses magnified her warm brown eyes to comical proportions, and her silver-grey fur with its distinctive white stripe bristled with scholarly intensity. She pointed a claw at a passage in the open book, her voice flat and precise.
"The Spice Path was originally constructed during the Era of the Dawn, sire. The baobab trees that line it were planted in three distinct phases, each corresponding to a different treaty between the coastal humans and the interior Mink clans."
Volt leaned forward, his eyes scanning the text. "Fascinating. And the drainage system? The records mention something about—"
A chinchilla Mink appeared in the doorway, her large ears twitching with barely contained excitement. She bowed low, her voice carrying the practiced formality of a palace messenger. "Your Highness, General Nyx Parn has returned. He is in the company of lesser Minks and requests an audience."
Volt straightened, his hand moving to push his spectacles up his snout. Before he could respond, the door burst open with enough force to make the tapestries sway.
Prince Nadir Ostara exploded into the room, his silver Savannah cat frame practically vibrating with barely contained energy. His blue-gold eyes blazed with excitement, and his long legs carried him across the floor in a series of bounding strides. His voice tumbled out in a breathless rush. "Father! Have you heard?"
Volt chuckled, the sound warm and deep in his chest. He rose from his chair, his tall silver-grey form moving with the easy grace of a man who had long ago mastered the art of patience. "Yes, son. I think I have."
He nodded to the chinchilla Mink, with calm authority. "Send them in."
The chinchilla Mink scurried away, and Volt made his way to the throne, settling into the ancient seat. His hazel eyes fixed on his son, who was now bouncing on the balls of his feet with barely contained enthusiasm.
"But Father, you don't know the best part!" Nadir's voice rose with excitement, his tail lashing behind him. "There's a Mink with them! An actual Mink! Not one of ours!"
Volt raised a brow, his interest genuinely piqued. "Now that is interesting."
The door opened, and they both turned to look over their shoulders. Queen Amaris Ostara swept into the room, her kodkod spotted coat dark with the distinctive reddish-brown undertone that simmered like burnished copper. Her deep brown eyes carried the warmth of a woman who had long ago mastered the art of knowing exactly what was happening in her domain. Princess Vihaan Ostara followed close behind, her small Canadian Maple Fox frame half-hidden behind her mother's skirts, her pale icy blue eyes wide with curiosity.
Volt smirked, his tail flicking with amusement. "Couldn't stay away, could you?"
Amaris's replied with dry humor. "We didn't want to miss out on all the excitement." She glanced down at Vihaan, who peeked out from behind her. "Did we, sweetheart?"
Vihaan's voice was barely above a whisper, but she adored her father. "Hi, Daddy."
Volt's expression softened. He reached out, his large grey-furred hand ruffling Vihaan's silver-white mane with gentleness.
Nadir rushed to his mother, his voice rising with the urgency of a child who had found something truly extraordinary. "Mother! Mother! Have you heard—"
Lieutenant Bolale Hero walked over to Volt, the massive tome balanced in her arms. With flat professionalism of someone who anticipated her ruler's needs. "Sire, I will take my leave and—"
Volt raised a hand, cutting her off. "You stay." His warm hazel eyes fixed on her. "You may want to keep a log of this for the record books."
Bolale nodded, her glasses sliding down her snout. "Yes, sire."
---
The doors ceremoniously swung open. General Nyx Parn entered first, his jet-black panther form radiating coiled power, his dark eyes fixed on the throne with the unwavering focus. Major Hagan Fawn followed, his towering Afghan Hound frame draped in cream and gold, his earnest hazel eyes soft with curiosity. Captain Acco Acheeth brought up the rear of the Ginmin Shield contingent, her golden-tawny cheetah form lean and restless, her tail flicking with barely contained energy.
Aurélie stepped through next, her silver hair loose, her steel-gray eyes sweeping the room with the flat assessment. Her hand rested on the hilt of Anathema, her posture coiled and ready.
Atlas followed, his rust-red Mink fur gleaming, his blue sapphire eyes tracking the room with the careful observation. His hand moved instinctively toward his weapons before he caught himself.
Bō-Zak entered with the lazy grace of a man who had never met a situation he couldn't charm his way through. His unkempt dark hair fell across his face, and his gold-flecked brown eyes danced with amusement as he surveyed the throne room. His long wooden pipe was conspicuously absent, his hands empty but his posture radiating the casual confidence.
Vesta bounced in behind them, her rainbow hair shimmering and shifting, her bright violet eyes wide with wonder. Her head swiveled constantly, trying to take in every detail of the magnificent throne room—the tapestries, the carved pillars, the ancient symbols that decorated the walls. Her mouth hung open in silent awe.
Roan Rokkoh brought up the rear, his raccoon features twisted in nervous anxiety. His striped tail was pressed flat against his body, and his dark eyes darted between the throne and the gathered guards with the terrified intensity of a creature who had accidentally wandered into a den of lions.
Nadir jumped to his feet, his blue-gold eyes blazing with excitement as he watched the newcomers. His tail bristled, and his ears perked forward with the intensity of a youth who had just spotted new prey.
Volt placed a hand on Nadir's shoulder, his grip firm but gentle. The message was clear: patience.
General Nyx Parn stepped forward, his voice low and measured. "Sire, allow me to introduce—" He gestured to Aurélie, Atlas, Bō-Zak, and Vesta.
Aurélie tilted her head in respect, her steel-gray eyes fixed on the king with the flat assessment. Atlas followed suit, his blue eyes tracking the room with the wariness. Bō-Zak's lazy tilt was more theatrical.
Vesta, still lost in awe, failed to notice the shift in attention. Aurélie cleared her throat sharply.
Vesta's head snapped around, her rainbow hair bouncing. "Oh! Yeah, right." She tilted her head with exaggerated formality, her voice bright and slightly breathless. "Nice to meet you."
Volt forced himself to hide the chuckle that threatened to escape. His tail flicked with amusement, the only tell he allowed himself.
He opened his mouth to speak, but Nadir rushed forward before the words could form. His voice carried the breathless urgency of a child who had waited his entire life for this moment. "Is it true? Is it true?"
Aurélie raised a brow, her steel-gray eyes narrowing with flat suspicion. "Is what true?"
Nadir blinked, his enthusiasm momentarily derailed by confusion. "All of it!" He gestured wildly, his arms sweeping in a grand arc. "Is all of it true? Have you really sailed around the world and seen everything?"
Bō-Zak chuckled, the sound warm and amused. "It's a big world, kid. I don't know that anyone has been able to see all of it."
Nadir's jaw dropped, his blue-gold eyes going wide with wonder. "Really? It's that big?"
He spun toward Atlas, his excitement undimmed. A little overwhelmed by the young prince's energy, Atlas took a half-step back, his rust-red fur bristling with discomfort.
Nadir's voice tumbled out in a rush. "And you're a Mink? What have you seen? Are there other Minks in your crew? Where did you grow up? How did you end up with them?"
Atlas rubbed the back of his neck, his blue eyes darting for escape. "Uh—"
Queen Amaris's voice cut through the chaos like a blade, sharp and scolding. "Nadir!"
Nadir's head snapped around, his enthusiasm deflating like a punctured sail. When he saw the scowl on his mother's face, his shoulders dropped, his voice dropping to a whine. "But, Mother—"
Amaris tilted her head, her deep brown eyes fixed on her son with the unyielding patience, woman who had long ago mastered the art of maternal discipline. The message was clear.
Nadir's shoulders slumped. "Yes, Mother." He shuffled back toward the throne, his tail dragging behind him.
Princess Vihaan Ostara peeked out from behind her mother's skirts, her pale blue eyes fixed on Vesta with shy curiosity. Her voice was barely above a whisper. "I like your hair."
Vesta's head whipped around, her bright violet eyes finding the small fox princess. Her face lit up with delight, hearts practically forming in her gaze. She clapped her hands together, her rainbow hair bouncing with the motion. "You are so cuuuute! I want to write a song about you!"
Vihaan giggled, her cheeks flushing with color. She ducked behind her mother, her silver-white tail wrapping around herself like a protective blanket.
Aurélie cleared her throat sharply, her steel-gray eyes fixed on Vesta with the flat intensity of a commander trying to regain control of her troops.
Vesta turned, her expression shifting to one of wounded innocence. "What? It's true."
Aurélie shook her head, her silver hair falling across her face.
---
King Volt leaned forward in his throne, his voice cutting through the chaos with calm authority, "Well. Now that that just happened—" He paused, his hazel eyes fixed on Hagan. "Major Fawn, please send for the Oracle. Iris Pometheia."
Hagan nodded, his cream-and-gold mane moving like a waves as he spun on his heel. "Yes, sire." His voice was warm, with easy confidence.
Volt turned his attention back to Nyx, his hazel eyes narrowing with curiosity. "How exactly did you cross paths with this group?"
Nyx stood tall, his hands clasped behind his back with the rigid discipline of a career soldier. "Sire, we found them interrupting one of Amos Baboto's gatherings."
Queen Amaris gasped, her spotted coat darkening with sudden fury. Her claws extended slightly, her voice dropping to a cold whisper. "Amos Baboto."
Roan, who had been attempting to hide behind Bō-Zak's lean frame, peeked out nervously. His raccoon features were pale with fear, his striped tail pressed flat against his body. His voice came out in a nervous stammer. "That was my doing, Your Highness."
He stepped forward, his hands clasped together with the desperate energy of accidentally stumbling into a den of lions. "You see, these good people saved me and my companions from a Sea King. When they asked for assistance finding an item or person, I thought the prophet Amos would be able to assist."
Queen Amaris's voice cut through the air like a blade, her tone sharp and scolding. "False prophet."
Roan cowered, his voice dropping to a terrified squeak. "Yes, Your Highness. Forgive me. I was only trying to—"
Aurélie stepped forward, her tone flat and measured. "We apologize if our presence has caused conflict or disruption. That is not our intention." Her steel-gray eyes fixed on the king, her hand resting on the hilt of Anathema. "Our purpose is simple."
Volt leaned forward, his hazel eyes narrowing with interest. "And what might that purpose be?"
Aurélie cocked a hip, her weight shifting with the practiced ease. "We are in search of a specific power holder. We have it on good authority that it—or they—are here."
Volt raised a brow, his tail flicking with interest. "And what power would that be?"
Aurélie's voice was flat, unyielding. "The Wani Wani no Mi, Model: Ginga."
Everyone turned their heads when Lieutenant Bolale Hero made an audible gasp. Her hand flew to her mouth, her coke-bottle glasses magnifying her wide eyes to comical proportions. Realizing all eyes were on her, she tilted her head, her voice dropping to a sheepish mumble. "Sorry, sire." Attempting to be unnoticed.
Vesta's head whipped around, her rainbow hair bouncing. "Is something wrong?"
Aurélie raised a brow, her steel-gray eyes narrowing with suspicion.
Bō-Zak's voice dropped to a low murmur, barely audible. "Appears we are in the right place."
Atlas nodded, his blue eyes fixed on the throne with renewed focus.
Aurélie's lips pressed together, with flat determination. "Your Highness—"
Volt raised a hand, silencing her. "This thing you seek. Why do you want it?"
The silence stretched, thick and tense. Aurélie's jaw tightened as she considered her response. Her steel-gray eyes flickered with the weight of a decision made under duress.
Vesta, overwhelmed by the tension, blurted out the truth. "It's for our friend!"
Aurélie, Atlas, and Bō-Zak all turned, their eyes fixed on the rainbow-haired musician with flat intensity, as they just watched their attempts to be careful collapse.
Vesta shrugged, with innocent confusion, not understood the concept of subterfuge. "What? It's true, right? Marya needs it. So she can open some door."
Atlas pinched the bridge of his nose, his rust-red fur bristling with frustration.
Acco Acheeth chuckled, the sound sharp and unexpected. She composed herself quickly when Atlas's head snapped around, his blue eyes blazing with annoyance.
Bō-Zak smirked, his gold-flecked eyes dancing with amusement as he shifted his weight, resisting the urge to reach for his pipe.
King Volt leaned forward, his hazel eyes fixed on Aurélie. "Is this true?"
Aurélie sighed, her shoulders dropping with the weight of a decision made.
