Chapter 771 - Chapter 856.1

Nami & Zeus vs Sanza & Jelly

The Clima-Tact has become a prison.

Nami grips the staff with both hands, her knuckles bleached white, her teeth grinding together hard enough to make her jaw ache. At the end of her weapon—the weapon she has trained with for years, the weapon that has channeled storms and lightning and the fury of the heavens themselves—a translucent blue jellyfish-human hybrid clings like a barnacle to a ship's hull.

Jelly's mouth remains sealed around the tip of the Clima-Tact, his massive starry eyes half-lidded in apparent bliss. His body wobbles with each muffled gurgle, weather eggs flowing through the staff and into his gelatinous form like water through a straw. Inside him, the charged spheres crackle and fizz, little bursts of electricity dancing through his translucent body before fading into nothing.

"Get off already!" Nami screeches, swinging the staff in a violent arc.

Jelly swings with it, his body stretching like taffy, his grip never faltering. A happy hum vibrates through the Clima-Tact and up into Nami's arms.

"Bloop... fizzy..."

Zeus hovers above the chaos, his small cloud-body crackling with indignation. His puffy face contorts through a series of expressions—confusion, annoyance, and finally, pure outrage. Those are his snacks. His. The weather eggs are the only thing that makes being Nami's personal battery worth the effort, and this squishy blue interloper is stealing them.

"Get off my snacks!"

Zeus opens his mouth wide—wider than any cloud has a right to—and chomps down on the Clima-Tact. His teeth close around the staff just above where Jelly clings, and for a moment, both creatures are attached to the weapon like remoras on a shark.

Then Zeus's face contorts.

His eyes bulge. His cheeks puff out. His entire cloud-body shudders with revulsion as the taste of jellyfish registers.

"Ew! Slimy!"

He spits—violently, dramatically—and Jelly goes flying. The jellyfish creature tumbles through the air, spinning end over end, his body rippling with the motion. He lands on the deck with a wet splat, bounces once, twice, then rolls onto his back like a turtle.

And through it all, the weather eggs keep flowing.

Jelly has somehow maintained his connection to the Clima-Tact even while airborne, his mouth still somehow sealed around the tip, his body stretched across the deck like a piece of living taffy. The Clima-tact standing erect like a lollipop stick as the weather eggs continue their journey from the staff into his stomach, crackling and popping with contained energy.

Nami stares at him. Her eye twitches.

How is he still—

CRACK.

The sound splits the air like a thunderclap. Nami's head snaps up, her eyes going wide, her body already tensing for the worst.

The forward mast—the massive wooden pole that has held the Sunny's sails through storms and battles and everything the Grand Line has thrown at them—shatters. A wave of force rips through it, invisible but undeniable, and the wood explodes outward in a shower of splinters and shards.

"NO!" Nami's voice cracks with grief and fury. "The Sunny!"

Wood chips rain down like snow. Shards of the mast—some small as splinters, some large as daggers—clatter across the deck, splashing into the sea, embedding themselves in the railings. The Sunny shudders, her structure groaning in protest at the violation.

And through the falling debris, a figure emerges.

Sanza Kaplan Figarland stands in his hybrid form—small body wrapped in white fur, three tails swishing behind him, golden horns shimmering in the firelight. His bamboo sword rises above his head, gripped in both hands with the grim determination of a general commanding his troops.

"Prepare yourself!"

The battle cry that leaves his small throat is surprisingly fierce, carrying the weight of noble lineage and childhood tantrums and something that sounds almost like desperation.

Zeus hears the voice before he sees the attacker. His eyes bulge—literally bulge, expanding to comical proportions in his cloud-face. His mouth opens.

"NAMI!"

Nami turns.

Sanza is already charging—small legs pumping, bamboo sword swinging in a wide arc, white fur rippling with each stride. His face is set in an expression of absolute concentration, the kind of focus that belongs on warriors twice his age and size.

Nami freezes.

Her brain, which has been processing threats and countering attacks for the past several minutes, screeches to a halt. She stares at the charging figure—the white fur, the three tails, the golden horns, the child—and for a long, terrible moment, she has absolutely no idea what she's looking at.

Zeus doesn't freeze.

"NAMI!"

The thundercloud opens his mouth and fires. A bolt of electricity—bright and jagged and crackling with enough voltage to stop a giant—streaks toward Sanza.

The child's eyes go wide.

He jumps—sideways, twisting in the air with a flexibility that doesn't belong to an eight-year-old—and the lightning bolt passes through the space where he stood. It strikes the deck instead, scorching the wood, sending up a spray of sparks.

Sanza rolls. He comes up to his feet with the practiced grace of someone who has trained in combat, even if his training has been mostly theoretical. His bamboo sword rises, pointing at Zeus with all the imperious authority a child can muster.

"You think that will stop me?!" His voice cracks with outrage, stretching the vowels with the particular accent of Celestial Dragon nobility. "You floating piece of cotton!"

He points a thumb at his chest—a gesture that would look ridiculous on anyone else, but somehow carries weight on him.

"I am the future Supreme Commander!"

Nami blinks.

She blinks again.

Her mouth opens. Closes. Opens once more.

"What are you talking about?!"

Sanza doesn't answer. He charges—again, bamboo sword raised, feet slapping against the deck, white fur shimmering in the firelight.

"I will show my big sis!"

The words hit Nami like a physical blow.

"WHAT?!"

Nami rolls, scooping up the Clima-tact, Jelly still sucking the end of it like a straw. She jumps to her feet and swings the Clima-Tact—on reflex, on instinct, on the desperate need to block the incoming attack—and the staff connects with Sanza's bamboo sword with a satisfying crack. Jelly, still attached to the end of the Clima-Tact, swings through the air like a mace, his body wobbling, his mouth still sealed around the staff's tip.

Sanza staggers backward, his arms vibrating from the impact. His eyes—those piercing, judgmental eyes that seem everyone as inferior—go wide with surprise.

"You're strong," he mutters, almost to himself.

Zeus sees his opening.

"I'll protect you, Nami!"

The thundercloud charges—or rather, floats aggressively—toward Sanza, electricity crackling along his form, his mouth open wide, ready to unleash another bolt.

"Zeus, watch your aim!" Nami snaps, ducking sideways as a stray spark arcs past her ear.

The bolt goes wide, striking the railing instead of the small tiger-boy. Wood splinters. Sanza yelps and dodges, rolling across the deck.

"You almost hit me!" Nami's voice rises to that particular pitch that means someone is about to get hit with a Thunder Lance Tempo.

"I was aiming for him!" Zeus protests, gesturing wildly at Sanza.

"Your aim is terrible!"

"Your face is terrible!"

"What did you just say?!"

Sanza uses the distraction to launch another attack, his bamboo sword swinging toward Nami's knees. She pivots, barely dodging, and swings the Clima-Tact in response. Jelly swings with it—a wobbly, gelatinous flail that somehow manages to look both threatening and ridiculous.

The bamboo sword meets the Clima-Tact again. And again. And again. Each impact sends vibrations up Nami's arms, makes her teeth rattle in her skull. For a child, this brat hits hard.

"Who are you?!" Nami demands, swinging her staff in a wide arc that forces Sanza to leap backward.

The small tiger-boy lands on the deck, panting. His hybrid form flickers—the white fur receding, the tails fading, the horns dissolving—and suddenly he's just a child again. A small, red-haired child with heavy eyebrows and piercing eyes and a bamboo sword that's too big for his hands.

He points the sword at her. His voice comes out breathless but defiant.

"You are not as strong as big sis."

Nami's eyes narrow. She studies his face—really studies it, for the first time since he appeared. The red hair. The eyebrows. The particular set of his jaw. Something about him looks familiar, tickles at the back of her mind, whispers of a connection she can't quite place.

"You look like..."

BOOM.

The explosion rips through the deck—one of Ember's stray sparkler rounds, detonating against the main mast's remains. The force of it thrusts both Nami and Sanza sideways, their feet leaving the deck, their bodies tumbling through the air.

Nami's back slams against the railing. Her breath leaves her lungs in a rush. Her vision swims.

"NAMI!" Zeus's voice cuts through the ringing in her ears.

The Clima-Tact slips from her fingers. It clatters across the deck, rolling, bouncing—and Jelly finally slides off, his body leaving a trail of sticky, glittery residue across the wood. He lands on his back with a wet splat, his translucent form rippling, his starry eyes spinning in lazy circles.

"Bloop... so fizzy..."

The Sunny rocks.

Not the gentle sway of waves, not the familiar rhythm of the sea. This is a violent, wrenching motion—the kind of movement that means something has struck the ship from below, or the sea itself has decided to rebel. The deck tilts. The railing groans. Wood screams against wood.

Nami grabs the railing with both hands, her fingers locking around the wood, her arms straining to hold herself in place. The world tilts sideways. The gray fog spins. Somewhere below, she hears the distant roar of something massive moving through the water.

Sanza isn't so lucky.

The small tiger-boy stumbles—his feet slipping on the deck, his arms windmilling, his bamboo sword clattering away. He pitches sideways, toward the railing, toward the gap where the railing has already splintered and broken.

Toward the sea.

His eyes go wide—not the imperious, judgmental eyes of a Celestial Dragon heir, but the terrified eyes of an eight-year-old child who has just realized he's about to die. His mouth opens. A scream builds in his throat.

And Nami's hand shoots out.

She catches his wrist—small and warm and trembling—just as his body swings over the edge. Her arm screams in protest. Her wounded shoulder throbs. But she holds on, her grip tight, her teeth gritted, her eyes locked on his.

"Hold on! I've got you!"

Sanza dangles over the railing, his feet kicking at empty air, his free hand scrabbling at the broken wood. Below him, the sea churns—dark and hungry and filled with shadows that might be waves or might be teeth.

He looks up at Nami.

His eyes are full of worry and panic—the raw, unfiltered terror of a child who has just discovered that the world is not as safe as he believed. His mouth opens. Closes. Opens again.

"Don't... don't let go."

The words are small. Quiet. The voice of a child who has spent his whole life pretending to be something he's not, and has just remembered that he's still just a boy.

Nami's grip tightens.

"I won't."

---

Jelly watches from his position on the deck, his body still rippling from the weather eggs, his starry eyes fixed on the scene before him. His head tilts. His mouth opens.

"Bloop... new friend?"

Zeus hovers nearby, his cloud-body flickering with residual electricity, his expression shifting from battle-ready to confused to something that might be concern.

"Uh... Nami? You need help?"

Nami doesn't answer. She's too busy holding on—to the railing, to Sanza, to the belief that somehow, impossibly, everything will be okay.

The Sunny rocks again.

And somewhere in the fog, a laugh echoes—deviant, delighted, hungry.

The battle continues.
