Chapter 36 - Mama's Table

It was never just coffee, of course.

Coffee became lunch. Lunch became a walk. A walk became a long evening in a quiet restaurant where they forgot to look at the menu.

Nathan had a way of asking questions and then really listening to the answers. He remembered things.

The name of the first porter she ever hired. The brand of tea she liked. The date of Evelyn's product launch.

He was not perfect. He was a terrible singer. He was always late to everything except Ella. He sometimes forgot his phone, his keys, and once, memorably, his own car.

But he was kind in small, steady ways, and she began to notice that she felt less like she was holding up a ceiling when he was around.

After Eight months, he said, "I'd like to meet your mother."

Ella froze. "Why?"

"Because she is the reason you are who you are. And because I have heard about her stew for months, and I am starting to feel left out."

She laughed, but she was nervous. She had never brought anyone home before.

The Sunday of the visit, Grace spent the morning cooking. She made her famous stew, fried plantain, rice, grilled chicken, and a pot of something that smelled so good that Evelyn kept sneaking into the kitchen to "check on it."

"Mama, you don't need to make so much."

"I do." Grace slapped her hand away from a bowl. "He is coming to meet my daughter's heart. He must eat well."

When Nathan arrived, he brought flowers for Grace and a box of chocolates for Evelyn. He shook Grace's hand with both of his.

"Madam Grace. It is an honor."

Grace looked him up and down, her eyes sharp. "You are the one who made my daughter smile."

Nathan blinked. "I… hope so."

"Hmm. Sit."

They ate. Nathan had two helpings, then a third, and when Grace asked how he liked it, he put his fork down and said sincerely, "It's the best food I have ever eaten."

"Flattery."

"No. I mean it. It tastes like…" He searched for the word. "Like someone is thinking of you while they cook."

Grace paused. She looked at him properly this time.

"That," she said slowly, "is the nicest thing anyone has ever said about my stew."

After lunch, when the plates were cleared, Grace got up to wash the pots. To everyone's surprise, Nathan rolled up his sleeves and stood next to her at the sink.

"What are you doing?" she asked.

"Helping."

"You are a guest."

"My mother would disown me if I let you wash alone."

Grace gave him a long, assessing look. Then, without another word, she handed him a sponge.

From the doorway, Ella watched them, her mother and the man she was slowly letting into her life, scrubbing pot together in comfortable silence.

Evelyn appeared at her shoulder and whispered, "He's in."

"Shh."

"She gave him a sponge. Nobody gets the sponge."

Ella tried to hide her smile, and failed.
