Chapter 109 - Chapter 108: Ambiguous Thoughts and Utter Confusion

Zuko had successfully slipped back into the Capital City.

All he had to do now was stay put until the next season arrived. At that time, Kahn would bring him and Azula to witness Ursa regain her memories.

Only then would the true beginning of the operation unfold.

Although staying in one place sounded boring in theory, reality turned out to be quite different.

Kahn was under surveillance, so the two couldn't meet for the time being. However, Azula, Ty Lee, and Mai could occasionally visit Zuko.

Of course, among the three, Mai was probably the only one who genuinely wanted to visit.

"Be careful with everything you do. Don't cause any more trouble. I don't want any more sudden bad news."

Before leaving, Mai poked Zuko's chest and sternly reminded him yet again.

The announcement of his banishment had hit her like a bolt out of the blue, leaving behind a shadow she still hadn't shaken.

"Okay, okay, I'll be careful."

Remembering that incident, Zuko completely lost his ability to argue with her. He could only give a bitter smile and nod obediently.

"You all be careful too."

"I know."

With reluctance, the two parted. The three girls slipped away under the cover of night, disappearing from sight.

But they didn't separate immediately. Once they were safely unseen, Mai turned to Azula and asked.

"Is something wrong with those people? Or do you have a plan?"

Ty Lee blinked in confusion. "Huh? What are you talking about?"

"Don't be so nervous, my dear sister. I'm just… thinking," Azula replied, avoiding the question for now.

Then she added, "I should've told you about the White Lotus, right?"

Mai and Ty Lee both nodded.

The White Lotus was a far-reaching organization.

Iroh and Zheng Zheng were both elders, and they were also allies in the plan to overthrow Ozai's rule.

"Don't you think their influence is a bit too strong?" Azula asked, voice layered with meaning.

Ty Lee tilted her head. "Isn't that good? The stronger they are, the better our chances. Are you worried they'll betray us?"

"Betrayal? That's a concern, but not the urgent one…"

Azula let out a quiet exhale and waved it off.

"Forget it. It's too early to bring this up. Haa~ Let's disperse. I need to go home and make up for my sleep."

She turned and left decisively, giving neither girl a chance to reply, leaving behind a baffled Ty Lee and a thoughtful Mai.

After helping Zuko return safely, Kahn slipped back into his usual routine.

Since he was still under surveillance, he couldn't meet Zuko, let alone do anything significant.

So he simply cultivated, read books, and occasionally took East, South, West, and North out for a walk around the city. His daily rhythm became peaceful and predictable.

Communication with Zuko was technically easier now, but that didn't matter—Zuko was clearly avoiding conversations with him, likely because Mai often dropped by.

"That scoundrel… gets a pretty face and forgets his friends," Kahn muttered, shaking his head.

He had also seen the sudden conflict between Azula and Zuko that night in the secret passage.

It puzzled him so much that he immediately asked Azula about it the next time she visited his home.

"What happened between you and Zuko that night?" he asked.

But the moment the words left his mouth, it was as if he'd stepped on a landmine. Azula instantly bristled like an angry cat.

"None of your business!"

As if that wasn't enough, she kicked him hard, hitting and scolding him simultaneously.

"It's all because of you, you scoundrel!"

"???"

Kahn had no idea why he was suddenly being beaten and blamed for something he didn't even understand.

Before he could ask anything else, Azula stormed out and slammed the door behind her.

Bang!

"...?"

Kahn and East, South, West, and North both stiffened, then exchanged a helpless look.

He was completely thrown off by Azula's behavior and even started wondering if he'd done something to upset her recently.

Well, during their last spar, he did go a bit hard on her, pressuring her until she was practically cornered.

But she was the one who asked for the spar, and she kicked him several times afterward anyway.

Hmm… and there was that time he took East, South, West, and North shopping and promised Azula food but forgot.

But he made up for it, didn't he? And she kicked him then too.

And earlier—

Wait.

Kahn froze as realization dawned.

Why was he always the one getting beaten?

His expression turned serious.

Thinking back, when he first started interacting with Azula, he always fought back.

But at some point, he gradually got used to her hitting him… and eventually stopped resisting.

Big problem.

Human adaptability really was terrifying. You could even get used to something like that.

Still, none of that explained her sudden anger, nor why she was mad at him specifically.

With no answers, Kahn had no choice but to ask the remaining witnesses: Ty Lee, Mai, and Zuko.

He soon discovered something strange.

Their reactions were different… yet startlingly aligned.

Ty Lee panicked a bit. "Ah—uh—I don't really know either. You should ask someone else. Maybe Azula… if she wants to tell you."

Zuko stammered as if terrified. "I can't explain it. Actually, I shouldn't explain it. It's best if Azula tells you herself."

Mai didn't even try to pretend. "Asking us is pointless. Even if we knew, we couldn't tell you. Just ask Azula."

"...?"

By the time he'd finished questioning them, Kahn felt like his mind was drowning in question marks.

Since when did all of you have a shared secret behind my back?

Can't a single one of you be normal?

And as for their "consistent suggestion"…

Kahn scoffed.

Ask Azula again? She'd literally beaten him last time.

Was he looking to die?

He immediately decided to abandon the entire matter.

Forget it. For now, it's safest not to provoke Azula. I'll deal with it later.
