Chapter 82 - Chapter 81: The Whispering City and the Silver-Haired Alchemist ( Season 1 )

The boundless white expanse of the Great Western Steppe gradually gave way to a dramatic, mountainous geography as the dirt highway snaked deeper into the central province of the Western Continent.

Behind them, the mile-long, perfectly cleared trench in the Frost-Bite Forest—where four Stage-5 Sovereigns and five hundred elite assassins had been atomized into sparkling frost-dust by a single physical punch—was already becoming the stuff of wild, unbelievable legends among the border merchants. But to the man in the dark traveler's coat walking down the mountain road, it was merely an erased obstacle, as insignificant as sweeping dry leaves off a porch.

By late afternoon, the crisp, pale sun began to cast long, violet shadows across the jagged granite peaks of the Thunder-Crag Range.

Nestled within a massive, natural amphitheater formed by three towering basalt cliffs was a colossal, ancient mountain city—Winter-Frost City.

Unlike the wooden timber towns of the border, Winter-Frost City was an intimidating, iron-clad metropolis built entirely from heavy, slate-gray volcanic granite and reinforced with thick plates of dark iron. Towering, fifty-foot battlements encircled the city, bearing massive, blue-glowing defensive runes of thermal insulation and physical defense. Dozens of tall steam-chimneys rose from the inner districts, puffing thick, white plumes of warm coal smoke into the freezing mountain air.

This city was the ultimate trading hub of the Western Province—a bustling, iron-fortified haven where the powerful Alchemist Guild, the Merchant Association, and ancient martial clans met to trade rare mineral ores, monster cores, and high-grade spiritual pills.

Li-Wen stood at the crest of the mountain ridge overlooking the sprawling, smoke-filled city below.

His dark traveler's coat fluttered gently in the cold mountain breeze. His broad shoulders remained perfectly squared, and the massive, pitch-black heavy blade rested quietly across his back. Beneath his charcoal tunic, his internal physical senses were working with calm, unhurried precision.

The microscopic shell of absolute-zero sapphire ice around the dark-violet Void-Piercing Needle in his lower spine remained locked in absolute stasis. However, as the days passed, Li-Wen could feel the void poison subtly adapting, trying to corrode the cold vault from within. To permanently dissolve the void poison without using his own locked spiritual Qi, he required a specific, extremely rare catalyst native only to the deep volcanic veins of the Western Continent—the Primordial Earth-Marrow Resin.

"Look, Brother Li-Wen!" Xiao-Yue squeaked softly, tugging at his broad sleeve as her small leather boots stepped onto a stone marker. "The city down there has giant chimneys! It looks like a hundreds of tea kettles boiling all at once!"

She held her pink lotus lantern high, its warm ruby light creating a cozy, protective halo around her small sheepskin coat.

"It is a city of iron and fire, Xiao-Yue," Li-Wen said flatly, his deep, raspy voice carrying an unyielding, steady weight into the wind. "They refine metals and pills there."

"Pills?" Xiao-Yue tilted her small head, her large eyes blinking with pure curiosity. "Like the bitter black pills Grandmother used to give me when I caught a cough?"

"Some are bitter," Li-Wen murmured, his hand gently enclosing her small gloved fingers. "Some are merely expensive. Let us go down."

Entering Winter-Frost City through its massive, iron-studded southern gates was surprisingly smooth.

The heavy guard patrols stationed along the gatehouse were clad in thick iron armor, bearing the crest of the city's ruling coalition. Though they eyed the broad-shouldered traveler carrying a massive scabbard-less heavy blade with professional caution, they saw no visible spiritual Qi radiating from him, nor did he display any hostility. In a bustling trading metropolis where thousands of mercenary bodyguards and rough physical cultivators entered daily, a quiet man traveling with a small girl holding a lotus lantern did not trigger immediate alarm.

After paying two iron coins at the gate, Li-Wen and Xiao-Yue stepped into the main thoroughfare of the lower district—the Iron-Market Avenue.

The noise and life of the city hit them instantly.

The three-hundred-foot-wide stone avenue was packed with thousands of people: fur-clad merchants shouting their wares, heavy steam-powered carriages rumbling over frozen cobblestones, long lines of pack-beasts loaded with glowing mineral ores, and martial artists from various western sects browsing the endless rows of shops.

Thick, fragrant scents of seared boar meat, spiced wine, burning charcoal, and exotic medicinal herbs filled the air, blending with the clanging sounds of blacksmith hammers echoing from the forge district nearby.

Xiao-Yue walked close to Li-Wen's side, her eyes wide with wonder as she looked at the towering four-story stone shops decorated with glowing iron lanterns and colorful silk banners.

"Brother Li-Wen! Look at that shop!" She pointed her small finger toward a large bakery where golden, steam-emitting sweet loaves were displayed in glass windows. "It smells like roasted chestnuts and honey!"

"We will buy some," Li-Wen said calmly, taking four small copper coins from his pocket.

He bought two warm, honey-glazed oat cakes wrapped in clean parchment, handing the larger one to Xiao-Yue. She took a big, happy bite, her eyes curving into sweet crescents as the warm, sugary sweetness melted on her tongue.

"Mmm! It's super soft!" She beamed, holding up the other half toward his face. "Take a bite, Brother Li-Wen! It's warm!"

Li-Wen bent slightly, taking a modest bite from the edge of the oat cake. "It is good."

As they continued walking down the thoroughfare, Li-Wen's acute physical ears—which could hear the subtle heartbeat of a bird a mile away—picked up the quiet, ambient murmurs circulating through the crowds of martial artists gathered outside the grand guild houses.

"...Did you hear about the Frost-Bite Forest?" A Stage-4 mercenary captain whispered to his companion outside a weapon shop. "The entire central forest... a one-mile wide zone... was completely erased this morning!"

"Erased?!" His companion gasped. "You mean burned by fire?!"

"No! Frozen and crushed into microscopic dust!" The captain hissed nervously, glancing around. "The surveillance tracking arrays of the Shadow-Blade Association went dark instantly! Rumor has it that four Stage-5 Sovereigns from the joint bounty coalition were erased in less than three seconds! The entire Western Province's bounty network is in total panic right now!"

"My god... Who could possess such terrifying power?!"

"Who else?! The Northern Sovereign! The rumor says he didn't even draw his blade... He just threw a single punch into the sky!"

Li-Wen walked right past the trembling mercenaries, his dark eyes flat, indifferent, and completely undisturbed.

He led Xiao-Yue off the noisy main thoroughfare, turning into a quieter, narrower cobblestone street lined with ancient, wooden-timbered apothecary shops. The air here was noticeably different—sharp, medicinal, and laden with the bitter, rich scents of dried roots, crushed dragon-scales, and refined spiritual herbs.

This was the Grand Medicine Quarter.

Li-Wen stopped in front of a modest, three-story stone building tucked quietly at the end of the alley.

Unlike the flashy, golden-decorated medicine halls owned by the main Alchemist Guild, this building had no glowing banners or aggressive guards. Above its thick oak door hung a weathered wooden sign carved with a simple image of a silver lotus flower wrapped around a pestle—the emblem of the Silent-Pill Pavilion.

Li-Wen pushed open the heavy door, a soft brass bell chiming lightly above their heads.

The interior of the Silent-Pill Pavilion was quiet, serene, and filled with the rich, earthy fragrance of rare mountain herbs and ancient wood. Hundreds of small wooden drawers lined the high stone walls from floor to ceiling, each labeled with neat, hand-written calligraphy. Long rows of glass jars filled with colorful dried roots, glowing mineral crystals, and preserved monster cores rested on clean oak shelves.

Sitting behind a long mahogany counter at the back of the shop was a young woman.

She appeared to be in her early twenties, dressed in simple, elegant robes of moon-white silk trimmed with silver thread. Her long, silky hair was a striking, immaculate shade of pure silver, tied loosely with a simple jade hairpin. Her face was exquisite—pale as fine porcelain, with sharp, intelligent features and a pair of striking, crystal-clear violet eyes that seemed to possess a calm, analytical depth far beyond her apparent age.

This was Lady Mu-Qing—the solitary master of the Silent-Pill Pavilion, a legendary Stage-5 High-Grade Alchemist who had isolated herself from the dirty politics of the main Alchemist Guild to pursue the pure, ancient ways of pill refinement.

When the brass bell chimed, Mu-Qing did not raise her head immediately. She was carefully holding a delicate pair of silver tweezers, placing a microscopic speck of blue frost-dust into a small, bubbling clay crucible resting over a faint, purple spiritual flame.

"The shop is open, but I do not refine low-grade healing pills for mercenaries," Mu-Qing said, her voice cool, smooth, and melodious like clear water flowing over smooth river stones. "If you seek standard medicinal herbs, the main guild house on Iron-Market Avenue will better serve your needs."

Li-Wen did not answer immediately. He walked up to the mahogany counter, his heavy leather boots making quiet, steady sounds on the polished floor. Xiao-Yue stood beside him, resting her pink lotus lantern on the lower edge of the counter, looking at the glowing purple flame with wide, curious eyes.

Li-Wen reached out his broad, calloused palm and placed a small, simple glass vial onto the wooden counter right beside her clay crucible.

Inside the glass vial was a single droplet of dark-violet, crystalline liquid—a microscopic sample of the void poison he had isolated from the Void-Piercing Needle in his spine.

The moment the glass vial touched the mahogany counter, the faint, purple spiritual flame beneath Mu-Qing's crucible suddenly flickered violently, turning bright red before extinguishing completely!

Mu-Qing's delicate hand froze mid-air.

Her striking violet eyes slowly drifted away from her crucible, locking onto the single droplet of dark-violet liquid inside the glass vial.

Her pale, flawless face—which had remained completely indifferent and cool—instantly underwent a drastic change! Her violet pupils dilated to the size of pinpricks, her breath catching sharply in her throat!

As a Stage-5 High-Grade Alchemist who had spent fifteen years studying ancient, forbidden toxins, she recognized that terrifying, void-devouring energy signature in a single microsecond!

"The... the Void-Piercing Poison..." Mu-Qing gasped, her cool voice trembling for the very first time. She raised her head, her violet eyes locking squarely onto the tall, broad-shouldered man standing before her.

She looked at his dark, torn coat, his broad chest, and the massive, scabbard-less heavy blade resting across his back. Her gaze lingered on his dark, void-like eyes—eyes that possessed an unyielding, ancient calm that felt as heavy as a collapsed mountain peak.

Mu-Qing slowly put down her silver tweezers, standing up from her mahogany chair. Her silver hair cascaded over her white silk robes as she bowed her head in a deep, formal gesture of profound respect.

"The solitary demon who erased the vanguard of the Seven Sects at the Eastern Seas... and atomized four Sovereigns in the Frost-Bite Forest this morning," Mu-Qing whispered softly, her violet eyes burning with a mix of shock, awe, and deep professional fascination. "You are the Northern Sovereign."

Li-Wen did not deny his identity. His posture remained unbent, flat, and immovable.

"I need Primordial Earth-Marrow Resin," Li-Wen said flatly, his deep, raspy voice carrying an unhurried, absolute authority into the quiet shop. "Refined to the ninth degree."

Mu-Qing took a deep, slow breath to compose her surging emotions. She looked down at the glass vial, then at Li-Wen's chest.

"Earth-Marrow Resin of the ninth degree..." Mu-Qing murmured, her analytical mind working at lightning speed. "You intend to use the heavy, earth-elemental physical density of the resin to permanently neutralize the void needle's core without channeling spiritual Qi through your locked meridians! A brilliant... yet terrifyingly brutal physical method that only a monster with a primordial constitution could survive!"

She paused, a look of deep regret darkening her exquisite features.

"However... Senior Li-Wen," Mu-Qing said gravely, her voice dropping into a quiet, serious tone. "You have arrived at a difficult time. The last batch of Primordial Earth-Marrow Resin in Winter-Frost City was seized three days ago by the Golden-Eagle Sect and the City Governor's Mansion."

Li-Wen's dark eyes narrowed by a fraction. "Seized?"

"Yes," Mu-Qing explained, her violet eyes flashing with a cold, contemptuous light. "The City Governor's son was severely injured during an expedition into the volcanic mines, and the Golden-Eagle Sect promised to refine a Stage-5 Soul-Restoration Pill for him using the Earth-Marrow Resin. They have locked the entire supply in the Grand Iron-Vault at the center of the city, guarded by two Stage-5 High-Grade Sovereigns and an ancient mountain-cleaving array."

She looked at Li-Wen, her silver hair fluttering slightly in the draft. "They know that any poisoned expert seeking to purge void toxins will eventually require Earth-Marrow Resin. The vault is not just a storage room... it is a trap set specifically for you."

Hearing that the bad people had taken the medicine, little Xiao-Yue squeezed Li-Wen's fingers tightly, looking up at his calm face with a small, worried pout. "Brother Li-Wen... they hid the medicine in a big iron box again?"

Li-Wen reached down, gently patting Xiao-Yue's small wool cap, dusting off a speck of stray ash from the hearth.

His expression did not show a single grain of anger, surprise, or hesitation. He looked at Lady Mu-Qing, his deep, raspy voice ringing out with an unyielding, absolute confidence that made the glass jars on the mahogany shelves vibrate softly.

"Where is the Grand Iron-Vault?" Li-Wen asked flatly.

Lady Mu-Qing stared at the solitary man in total awe. She knew that any other cultivator—even a Stage-5 High Sovereign—facing two High-Grade Sovereigns and an ancient defensive array with ninety percent of their meridians sealed would carefully plan a stealthy infiltration or seek a compromise.

But the man standing before her did not ask about guards. He did not ask about arrays. He simply asked for the location.

A soft, rare smile touched the corners of Mu-Qing's pale lips—a look of deep, unconditional admiration for an absolute master of the martial world.

"It is at the central plaza of the upper district, Senior," Lady Mu-Qing replied smoothly, pulling a small, silver-bound map from her drawer and placing it onto the counter. "If Senior intends to break the vault... allow this junior to accompany you. I am the only alchemist in this city capable of refining the Earth-Marrow Resin to the ninth degree the moment you retrieve it."

Li-Wen looked at the silver-haired alchemist, then down at the map.

"Get your pestle," Li-Wen said simply, turning his body toward the oak door, taking Xiao-Yue's small hand into his broad palm once more. "We are going to pick up the resin."
